Watersheds face resource impacts driven by accelerated change related to land use, population,
and climate. About every three years a conference is held to bring together watershed
researchers, observers, and managers to share scientific advances and management strategies.
For the <strong>Fourth</strong> <strong>Interagency</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Research in the Watersheds, we will view watershed
science with a continental perspective including pressing issues of watershed science and
management in our largest and perhaps most vulnerable state, Alaska. The purpose of the
conference is to better understand the processes driving change and help managers incorporate
societal needs and scientific uncertainty in the management of natural resources. Please join us in
Fairbanks September 26-30, 2011, for this next big step in sharing information about work in
watersheds.

<strong>Conference</strong> Topics
Abstracts for presentations or posters are invited on
the following topics, or other topics that you may wish
to suggest, related to pristine or altered watersheds:
Observing Watersheds: Instrumentation, remote
sensing, data management, observed trends.
Studying Watersheds: Research, analysis and
interpretation of data, causes and effects, experimental
approaches, cumulative effects, relationships, predictions,
models. Drivers of change can include climate, land use,
growth in population and water demand, wildfire, disease,
insects, agriculture, mining, and energy development.
Impacted goods and services include quantity and quality
of water, biota and habitats, controls on carbon, nutrient,
and sediment fluxes, aesthetics, and opportunities for
education and recreation.
Managing Watersheds for change: Approaches to
adaptive management, incorporation of uncertainty in
decision making, prioritization of management actions.
Collaborative approaches. Ecosystem restoration and
strategies for adaptation, mitigation, and enhancement of
resiliency.

27 September 2011 (Tuesday)
o Morning: Keynote presentations
o Afternoon: Observing Watersheds
o Evening: Awards Banquet and Poster Session
28 September 2011 (Wednesday)
o Field Trips showcasing research at Denali, the
Yukon River; Bonanza Creek; Caribou-Poker
Creek, the Permafrost Tunnel, and Chena Hot
Springs.
29 September 2011 (Thursday)
o Morning: Studying Watersheds
o Afternoon: Managing Watersheds
o Evening: Poster Session
30 September 2011 (Friday)
o Morning: Closing plenary with Keynote address.
Location and Lodging
<strong>Fourth</strong> <strong>Interagency</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Research in the Watersheds
September 26-30, 2011, Fairbanks, Alaska
Westmark Hotel in downtown Fairbanks. Rooms
will be available at government per diem rates and
meals will be catered to enhance networking.

26 September 2011 <strong>Conference</strong> begins. Program and
Proceedings distributed.
30 September 2011 <strong>Conference</strong> concludes.
Registration
The conference registration fee of $275 will cover
the cost of the facilities, meals, Wednesday’s field
trip, and the CD of the <strong>Conference</strong> Proceedings.
Student can apply to CUAHSI for registration
assistance and local producers, managers, and users
of watershed resources can request complimentary
registration and meals. After July 1, the registration
fee will increase to $325.
