Our cultural activities and the cultural history of Southern Jutland in
general are unique. In 2014 we will mark the 150 th anniversary of the
war of 1864. The war had a major influence on the development of
Denmark, especially on Southern Jutland. Some of the most significant
battles took place in the Sønderborg area, and we are already preparing
some exciting, new events that will communicate its history in a different

Main Town in the Region
Sønderborg is the main town in
the region with around 30,000 inhabitants.
The town developed around
Søndreborg, whose name was later
changed to Sønderborg Castle.
On p. 26 and 27 you can read more
about Sønderborg Castle and the
area’s other castles and palaces.
Sønderborg has a charming harbour
front with cafés and restaurants
and an intimate centre with loads of
exciting shops.
Sønderborg Castle and the impressive
Alsion with its university,
research park, concert hall and café
are beautiful landmarks and underline
the town’s historical significance.
They also bear witness to Sønderborg’s
rapid development and great
ambitions.
Sønderborg offers world-class
cultural and musical adventures all
year round – indoors and outdoors.

Tilting-at-the-ring is a cultural tradition
in southern Jutland. On specific

Experience Sønderborg on your
own by the help of the leaflet about
the ‘heart path,’ that is available from
the tourist office. The 5 km long path
in the heart of Sønderborg town
leads through parks and neighbourhoods
from different periods and
past sculptures in many styles.
Dybbøl Mill at the Dybbøl Entrenchments
became a symbol of Danish
bravery in the war of 1864. You can
read more about the Battle at Dybbøl
and the year 1864 on p. 22-23.
In Ulkebøl Church there is a ’Dannebrog’
(the Danish flag) that ‘defended’
Danishness when the Prussians
conquered the island Als in 1864. The
pastor would not obey an order to
take down the flag, so the soldiers
shot at it and stepped on it. The pastor
moved to Zealand and took the
flag with him. After the Reunification
in 1920 the flag was brought back to
the church, where it can still be seen.
If you like shopping, there is ample
opportunity for this in the many
shops in town. Enjoy a walk in the
pleasant pedestrian street and have
a well-deserved break in one of the
cafés. Scan the QR-code on this page

town centre.
On the fringe of town is Center Øst
with all its special shops and everyday
grocery shops.
In October 2013 the new shopping
mall ’Borgen’ opens in the center
of the town. The mall has up to 70
shops.

Gråsten – Home Town of the National Apple
The town Gråsten lies beautifully at
Nybøl Nor, surrounded by impressive
woodlands.
Gråsten Palace and palace garden
are the main attractions and you can
read more about the history of the
palace on p. 26 and 27. The royal family
uses Gråsten Palace as a summer
residence every year.
There is always a parade and a
changing of the guard when the ro-
yal family visits the palace. Each day
at 11.30, accompanied by flutes and
drums, the regiment departs from
the Yellow Mansion and marches
through Gråsten to the palace, where
the changing of the guard is at 12
o’clock. On Fridays you can enjoy a
small concert in the palace yard after
the changing of the guard.
Denmark’s national apple, the
‘Gråsten Apple,’ was brought to Gråsten
by Duke Frederik Ahlefeldt the
The regiment departs from the Mansion
Younger (1662-1708), who bought
the tree on a trip to the south. The
tree was nursed in the palace garden’s
nursery and named the ‘Gråsten
Apple’.
Scions were taken from the mother
plant and sold, and soon the tree was
cultivated in many places. Today it
is still cultivated by Østergaard Fruit
and Berries and Hestehavegård Fruit
Plantation – see the red apple icon on
the map of the region on p. 108-109.

Gråsten – idyllic at all seasons
The original tree was pushed over
in the storm in 1999, but 80 years
old trees from scions in the garden
still exist. On p. 64 you can see when
guided tours are on in the garden or
visit the garden on your own.
The horse-drawn wagon rides
through the forests of Gråsten are
lovely experiences of nature. Have
a break at one of the beautiful lakes
named after Queen Ingrid and the
princesses. See p. 61 for times and
dates.
The Gråsten Forests are wonderful
no matter whether you walk, cycle
or ride a horse. You will find many
deep melt water valleys from the Ice
Age and differences in level of up
to 45 m. A map of Gråsten Forests is
available at the tourist office.
Legend has it that the pirate Alf,
who lived in Gråsten Forests, was at
work throughout the region – especially
around Flensburg Fjord. Take
your children on a pirate Alf tour past
Alf’s Spring to Alf’s Cave and get to
know the legend. See p. 61 for more
information.
Gråsten is an active market town
with a good and varied selection
of shops, including grocery shops,
in the town centre and the Ulsnæs
Centre. See p. 71
The Old Timer Race, the Harley
Davidson Rally and the Market Days
are some of the events that are on in
Gråsten at various points in time each
year. Our updated events guide is
available from the tourist office.
Rinkenæs Old Church ranks among
the oldest churches in Denmark. It
was built in Roman style in 1158 and
was originally surrounded by a small
village that disappeared around the
year 1300. Today the church lies on
its own around four kilometres from
Rinkenæs.
Kværs Heath is an old drifting dune
that was stopped by the help of
plants. The area consists primarily
of conifers and heather and has a
particularly interesting plant and
animal life. Access is via a gravel road
from the parking space off Avntoftvej
between Kværs and Søgaard.

Cultural Landscapes
Broager lies on a peninsula,
surrounded by the Gendarmstien
military road with a beautiful view of
Flensburg Fjord. On the east side of
the peninsula lies Stensigmose Klint
cliff, which is known for its fossils.
Read more about the hikes along the
Gendarmstien path and Stensigmose
on p. 40-43.
The majestic spires on Broager
Church towers high above the roofs
of the town and therefore used to be
a seamark. The whitewashed church
was built with large, medieval bricks
in the 1200s with a Roman apse,
chancel and nave. It was expanded
in the 1400s with the Late Gothic
sacristy, the arched transept chapels
and the twin towers. The church is
known for its adornment with frescos
and has Denmark’s largest belfry.
There are good bathing beaches at
Vemmingbund and Kragesand at the
most southern point of Broagerland.
Nydam Boat
The view from Smøl Mound is amazing.
It lies 46 metres above sea level
with a view of Nybøl Nor, Flensburg
Fjord and Broager Church.
Experience the restored brickworks
at the Cathrinesminde Brickworks
Museum. This totally restored brickworks
dates from 1732, operated
until 1969, and is now a museum,
located beautifully at Flensburg
Fjord. See more on p. 53. Follow the
Teglværksstien path along the water

Enjoy the beach at Vemmingbund

fewer than eight tileworks. See p. 40.
The Sandbjerg Mansion ranks
among the most beautiful mansions
in Southern Jutland and was built in
1788. It served the Prussians as a military
headquarters and a field hospital
during the war of 1864. On June 29,
1864 its clock played a crucial role
when it signalled the Prussians crossing
Alssund at two o’clock at night.
Aarhus University now uses this
mansion for course activities.
The Nydamstien’s route follows the
water via the beautiful Sottrup Forest,
where the final battle of the 1864 war
was begun. There are still traces after
excavated cannon positions in the
forest, and you can also see slideways
in the slopes where the Prussians put
their boats in the water when they
went to the island Als. The tour goes
past the mansion to Nydam Mose
bog. Read more on p. 41.
Weapons finds in Nydam Bog
indicate permanent residents’ battle
against outsiders. During peat-digging
in the bog people came across
wooden planks and, when an excavation
was carried out in 1863, not
only arrowheads and spearheads in
large numbers were found; also three
boats from around 310 AD emerged.
One was an oak tree boat axed into
pieces, the other was a fir tree boat
lost in the war of 1864. The third
one is known as the Nydambåden
and can be seen in Gottorp Palace in
Schleswig. Today the bog looks like it
did before the finds were made.
The Nydambåden’s Laug guild is
building a true copy of the Nydam
Boat by the help of old shipbuilding
techniques. The wood is prepared by
the help of laborious craftsmanship
and adapted and nailed together into
a clincher-built, 23 metres long boat.
The ship will be launched on
August 17, 2013, which is the 150
years anniversary of the following
record made by archaeologist Conrad
Engelhardt in his excavation protocol:
“In the middle of the grave, we encountered
the middle of the large
rowing boat made of oak.”

The Lakes in the Northern Part of Als
The northern part of Als has clear
traces of glaciers from the Ice Age,
that shaped the landscape into beautiful
hills, valleys, coves and lakes.
Oldenor and Mjels Lake have been
dried out and cultivated, but some
time in the modern age it was filled
with water again. The lakes in the
northern part of Als have all been
connected with the fjord as bays or
coves but have now become freshwater
lakes with a rich birdlife.
Nordborg Castle lies in a beautiful
area at Nordborg Lake. Read more
about the castles and palaces in the
area on p. 26 and 27. On the second
Saturday in August, the Historic Day
is on at Nordborg Castle.
Tontoft Church in Nordborg was
built in the 1200s. Behind the altar
there is a door leading to the Ducal
Family’s sepulchral chapel, which was
finished in the year 1700. You can see
the coffins through a lattice gate. Join
Nordborg Castle in idyllic surroundings
a town walk, during summer season,
where we visit the church and hear
the history of the town. See more on
p. 64.
The history of the ferry route
between Hardeshøj and Ballebro
goes back to 1683. Even today the
ferry Bitten connects northern Als
with the mainland, and if you are
coming from the north, taking the
carferry Bitten is still the quickest
way to northern Als.

The Blue Cube, Universe
The church stables at Egen Church
are some of Denmark’s most beautiful
and well preserved stables. There
are 34 stables, each with room for 2
horses. The stables are between 150
and 200 years old.
Northern Europe’s highest sundial
is located south of Egen Church on
the opposite side of the main road.
It is 12 metres high and placed on a
28 diameter construction. It indicates
time with the incredible precision
of +/- one minute, compared to the
usual 30 minutes.
The theme park Universe is the
area’s main attraction. Here you have
to use both your body and your mind
when you explore the exciting activities
and natural phenomena. Read
more on p. 33, 51 and the back cover.
Jollmand’s Farm, is an old farm in
the style from the island Als. It has the
shape of a fish hook and still looks
like it did when it was built.
The Hjortspringbåden boat is
Scandinavia’s oldest find of sacrificed
weapons. This plank-built boat was
found in a bog just north of Guderup
and can be dated back to around 350
BC. A copy of the boat was built at
the Lindeværftet shipyard, where
you can have a look at the boat and
see Iron Age clothes, objects and
workshops.

The Nørreskoven Forest on the east
coast is exceptionally rich in relics of
ancient culture. More than 80 ancient
monuments are registered in the
7 km 2 large forest. Many of them are
round and long barrows from the
Neolithic Age (New Stone Age).
The ruined castle Østerholm lies
in a garden on Strelbjergvej in
the small village Østerholm at the
Nørreskoven forest. It was used as
a widow’s dwelling in connection
with Nordborg Castle. Today only the
foundation stones remain.

Town of the Dukes
When Duke Ernst Günther built the
first palace in Augustenborg, he had
the village Stavnsbøl torn down.
Small houses were built for palace
staff and many of these houses still
have their old, beautiful doors.
Augustenborg Palace is one of the
most magnificent baroque palaces
in Denmark. Read more about the
palace and the area’s other palaces
and castles on p. 26 and 27.
Augustenborg Palace Church
is a complete example of a prince’s
chapel. The beautiful marble floor,
lavish stucco decorations and woodcarvings
covered with gold testify to
the riches of the past.
The chapel is from 1775 and was
specially built for ladies to be able to
move around in their great crinolines.
The impressive baptismal Carrara
marble font was a present from Tsar
Alexander. The altar, pulpit and organ
Augustenborg Palace
are remarkably placed above each
other. The church is open Mon-Fri
9.00-15.00.

The Mansion, Augustiana
Various concerts are on during summer
in the Palace Gardens. You can,
for instance, enjoy the music festival
’En Søndag på Als’ in mid-August. At

One of the country’s largest sculpture
parks – Augustiana - lies in the
northern part of the palace garden,
which is open to visitors. Read more
about Augustiana Sculpture Park and
Art Centre on p. 56.
The Psychiatric Museum tells the
story of the development in treatment
of mentally ill people through
the more than 80 years where parts
of the palace have been used as a
psychiatric hospital. See p. 52.
In the Mini Museum at the bell
tower you can gain an insight into the
history of the ducal family. See p. 52.
Augustenborg Churchyard lies
around 750 metres from the church
at the corner of Stavenbølsgade, Parkgade
and Møllegade. It was opened
in 1848 when Ketting Churchyard
had become too small for the fallen
in the Three Year War, that lasted from
1848-1850. Today there are 69 graves
and one common grave from the two
Slesvig wars. The churchyard is listed.
Sebbe Als was built in 1967-69 as a
true copy of the Viking ship ‘Wreck 5’
from the finds in Skullelev at Roskilde
Fjord. The ship was built on the basis
of drawings of the original ship and
with the same type of tools as the ‘old’
Vikings used. Sebbe Als was launched
in 1969, and you can see the ship
during Rum Regatta in Sønderborg.
Ketting Cove lies by the shortcut between
Sebbelev and Egen. This area of
natural beauty has a rich birdlife, and
along the southern side of the cove
you can follow a small path to a bird
sanctuary with a tower hide, but do
put on your Wellingtons. You can fish
in the western part at the dike. Read
more on p. 36-39.

Lovely Beaches
The beaches on Als’ southern shores
are some of the best in the area. At
Kegnæs and Drejet the water is often
quiet and invites to a nice cool swim.
When driving towards Kegnæs,
you come to a sign on your left with
the word ‘Badestrand’ – just before
the camping site. The gravel road
here leads to the beach Kerneland.
Lots of lovely holiday cottage areas
lie along the coasts. The area’s largest
cottage areas are in Skovmose,
Mommark, and at Kegnæs. You can
book your holiday cottage online at

The nature reserve ”Trillen” is a
beautiful area near Høruphav. Park
by the forest and follow the shoreline
to the trees where you can watch the
birds from the tower hide. Continue
along the shore and through the
forest back to the car park. This is
also where the Gendarmstien path

Discover the rich bird life and
experience the area’s beautiful
nature. On a clear day you can enjoy
the incredibly beautiful view from
Mintebjerg over the fields and
Hørup Hav and see the Kegnæs peninsula
reflected in the still water.
Vibæk Watermill is the last watermill
on the island Als. It is situated in idyl-

The peninsula Kegnæs is connected
to Als via a natural tongue of land
that was made into a dam during the
rule of Duke Hans the Younger.
Kegnæs Lighthouse dominates the
skyline by the dam leading to the
Kegnæs peninsula and is open during
summer. Climb to the top and enjoy
the view to Broager, Germany and
the islands Ærø and Langeland.
From the lighthouse you can follow
the Kegnæs Path along the west
coast with a view to Broagerland and
Kegnæs Ende, where you can see
across to Høruphav. More about the
areas lighthouses on pages 28-29.
Kegnæs Church was built in 1615.
The story about the building of
this particular church is tragic in
that Duke Hans the Younger had 7
peasants hanged because they were
suspected of having stolen some
meat from his pantry.
When spring came and the ice at
Sønderborg Castle melted, the meat
was discovered in the castle moat.
It had rotted and been discarded by
the Duke’s employees because they
did not dare tell the Duke about it.
The church was built as penance for
the unjust executions.
Northern Europe’s largest collection
of stone dolmens exists in the
small forest Blommeskobbel on the
east coast of Als, a wonderful place
for a very special walk.
Park at the edge of the forest and
walk down the path about 500 m to
find Scandinavia’s largest collection
of stone dolmens. Notice the large
cover stone on the first long barrow;
it weighs around 20 tonnes. One
wonders how it was placed there.

Maritime Experiences
If you fancy a swim, you can visit
one of our beautiful beaches. In Denmark
the wind often comes from the
west, and our region is in lee of Jutland.
This means that there often is less
wind at our coasts, and the water
here is often quite calm. Our location
between fjord and belt also ensures a
mild climate.
Child-friendly beaches are at
Købingsmark, Nygård in Nørreskoven
and Kerneland near Skovby on Als, as
well as at Vemmingbund, Gammelmark,
Kragesand and Alnor Beach
Park on the mainland.
The surfing school at Drejby Beach
Camping will teach you how to surf
at one of the best surfing beaches in
Denmark. Find more information on

Go on a crab hunt. It is fun and easy
to catch crabs and you do not need
expensive equipment. Tie one end of
a string to a stick and the other to a
clothes peg. Attach a crushed mussel
Sailing along the coast of Als
to the clothes peg and drop it into
the water near some seaweed. It will
not be long before crabs appear!
Bring your fishing gear with you.
Whether you prefer to sit by the
side of a lake and catch a large pike,
or stand on the coast using flies or
spinners, you will have a wonderful
fishing holiday here. Read more

If you are on a sailing holiday and
looking for a place to berth, you will
find a range of large and small mari-

nas along our coasts. More information
on p. 68-70.
If you prefer to cast anchor, there
are plenty of wonderful bays and
coves of natural beauty. Alssund,
Dyvig and Hørup Hav are among the
preferred places to lie at anchor.
Every year maritime events and
races are on in our waters. You may
plan your sailing holiday so you can
participate in Als Rundt (Als Sailing
Race) or see the great sailing ships
and join the festivities at the harbour
in Sønderborg during the Royal Classic
Regatta or Rumregatta before the
ships depart for Flensburg.
Would you like to go on a sailing
holiday, and do you need a boat?
At www.yachtcharter.dk you will find
yachts for hire on a weekly basis from
Dyvig Harbour on northern Als. The
yachts have navigation equipment,
map plotters, auto-pilots, windexes,
logs, bathymetry equipment, etc.
If you are into genuine sailing
match racing yachts, you have the opportunity
to try it out in Sønderborg
together with an instructor, who will
help you. Both novices and experienced
sailors are welcome. See more

special occasion. If you would like
your wedding, birthday or another

The Europe Class World Championships
is on from July 29 th to August
10 th in Sønderborg Bay. Around 200
sailors from up to 20 countries will
take part, and, as a part of the world
champion-ship, Nations Cup is on as
well. The sailors will be between 16
and 25 years old. You can follow the
daily races from the beach ‘Skydestranden’
by Sønderborg Bay or via
big screens in the tent put up for the
occasion at Sønderborg Yachting
Club.
On Saturday, August 3 rd , there is a
free open air concert on the square in
front of Sønderborg Castle. Come
and enjoy the international atmosphere
on the square and join in
cheering the winners of Nation Cup.

All year round, the harbour in Sønderborg
hosts a wide range of maritime
activities. No matter whether you
are a sailor or if you simply like to look
at ships, the harbour front is always
worth a visit. It is also here that work
is being done to realise the famous
architect Frank Gehry’s master plan
for a modern harbour front, see
www.byenshavn.dk.
In 2012 it was possible for the first
time since 1855 to see the classic
sailing ships meet for the regatta
known as ‘Royal Classic.’ With
the re-establishment of this classic
regatta, the area is bound
together again for a short while
across the current border, and
we can then think back to a
time when Flensburg was
under the Danish Crown.
It is not only a sailing event
for beautiful, old wooden
ships; there is also a great
party on the harbour front
for both locals and tourists.

party will truly get going.

Tilting-at-the-Ring
Tilting-at-the-ring festivals are a
longstanding tradition in Southern
Jutland, and every town has its own
tournament during summer. Festivities
last entire weekends where riders
compete during the day and celebrate
in the beer tents in the evening.
Tilting-at-the-ring has its roots
in the Middle Ages when knights
fought each other on horseback with
lances and entertained European
nobility. When this sport came to
Denmark, the armoured knights were
replaced by a ring hanging in a gallows,
making it an event for common
people.
Today, riders compete for the title of
“king,” galloping through the gallows
to spear a ring with a lance. Initially,
the ring has a diameter of 22 mm and
sits in a piece of metal hanging in a
couple of threads. Those spearing
all 24 rings go on to a special round
called ’Kings Round’.

The riders are eliminated one by
one as the rings diminish in size until
they are only 6 mm wide. The contestant
who can handle the greatest
number of rounds is pronounced
king.
Scandinavias largest tilting-festival
takes place in Sønderborg with approximately
500 riders in an impressive
parade through town to and
from the tilting grounds before and
after the competitions.

From Danevirke to Dybbøl
War is frightening, yet fascinating,
and the war of 1864 is no exception.
Writer and journalist Tom Buk-Swienty
recently sparked renewed interest
in this subject with his critically acclaimed
books ‘Slagtebænk Dybbøl’
(Slaughter at Dybbøl) and ‘Dommedag
Als’ (Doomsday Als). The books
are brilliant in the way they take
readers on a journey back to the
fateful year when we lost Southern
Jutland and Denmark became a very
small nation.
However, the journey will not be
complete until you are standing
on Dybbøl Banke, gazing towards
Broagerland, where the Prussian
grenades rained down on the entrenchments,
or until you look from
Arnkilsøre across Alssund towards
Sottrupskov Forest in Jutland early
in the morning, from where the final
attack was launched. History is still
present, and if you cover your eyes,
you can sense the sounds and smells
– not to mention the fear.
Relive the war of 1864 at the Battlefield Center

If you would like to experience the
whole story of the battle, you must
begin south of the border at Danevirke.
This is where the Danish army was
ready to fight the Prussian soldiers
when the war broke out on January
31 st , 1864. However, after the initial
encounters in front of the position, it
was evident that the position could
not be defended, and the Danes decided
to abandon it on February 4 th .
A few kilometres from Schleswig,
where the military road crosses Danevirke,
lies the Danevirke Museum.
Recently, traces were found of the
gate that regulated traffic on the military
road in antiquity. The museum
tells the story of Danevirke and is
worth a visit, but you must remember
to bring some Euros; the museum
does not accept Danish money or
credit cards. 500 metres west of the
museum Danish and German engineer
corps have restored entrenchment
Skanse 14 on the basis of old
drawings and photographs.
Coming from Gråsten, Dybbøl Banke
lies as a natural hill on the way to
Sønderborg. There is a fantastic view
of the entire area from the entrenchments,
and you can see the northern
part of Alssund and Flensburg Fjord.
If you would like to take a walk in
the entrenchments on your own, you
can pick up a detailed map at the
tourist office.
Under the cover of darkness on
June 29 th , the first Prussian soldiers
boarded their boats, took to the
water and headed for Als. The Danes
discovered far too late that the attack
had begun, and they did not have
time to react before the area was
teeming with Prussian soldiers.
If you follow the Nydamstien path,
you can still find slideways and depressions
in the soil where the rowing
boats were put in the water, and you
can also see where the Prussian cannons
were placed.
In the last weekend of June there is
a re-enactment of ‘The Battle of Als,’
which was the determining battle in
the war of 1864. There is a procession
through Sønderborg town, a soldier’s
camp at Kær Vestermark and a reenactment
of the voyage to Als at
Arnkilsøre in the middle of the night.

commemorate the 150th anniversary
of the fateful events of 1864, that
had serious consequences not only
for southern Jutland, but also for the
rest of Denmark, and that have made
an impact on our self-image that can
be felt even today.
Sønderborg Business and Tourism
Centre provides a range of products
you can choose from if you would
like to delve into the dramatic events
of 1864 in Sønderborg.
On April 2 nd and 3 rd , 1864, Sønderborg
was bombarded with Prussian
grenades, and large parts of the town
were ruined.
On a 1864 town walk we will take
you back to Sønderborg of 1864,
and you will be told about life in
town prior to the attack on Dybbøl
on April 18 th . The walk takes you past
some of the buildings that survived
the bombardment and that contribute
to the atmosphere in the streets

In the footsteps of the war - is a
tour especially for groups. We cross
the German border, where the first
phase of the war took place. We visit,
Mysunde, Danevirke and Sankelmark
and explore the events that occur-

ed here in 1864. It is also possible
to extend the trip with a visit to the
Danish sites at Broagerland and
e.g. Bøffelkobbelhuset, where two

Southern Jutland was a Duchy
From the beginning of the 1200s
until 1864 southern Jutland distinguished
itself from the rest of Denmark
by being a duchy. The area had
a kind of regional rule but still belonged
to the Danish king.
In the area around Sønderborg
the ducal period is still evident in
that the many castles and palaces
underline the fact that Southern
Jutland was – and still is – something
very special.
The town Sønderborg, that faces
the sea at the southern entry to Alssund,
worked as a defence towards
the south.
The first castle was built in the 1100s
and was continually expanded. In
the 1500s the castle was one of the
country’s strongest ones, and this
was partly the reason that Sønderborg
Castle was chosen as a prison
for the former King Christian II.
Today the castle is a museum of the
Sønderborg Castle
history of Southern Jutland. Find
more information on p. 32, 50 and 58.
Gråsten Palace was built in the
1500s. After a fire in 1603 it was rebuilt
and then changed into baroque
style in the late 17th century. In 1757
also this palace burned down, leaving
only the palace church.
The current palace is from 1759 and
1842 and has been reconstructed
continually. After 1920 the state took

over the palace and gave it to the
Crown Prince and his wife – the later
King Fredrik IX and Queen Ingrid.
Today the palace is used by the
royal family as a summer residence.
There is no access to the palace itself,
but you can take a walk in the garden
and visit the palace church.
Augustenborg Palace was built in
1660 by Duke Ernst Günther and
named after his wife Auguste of
Lyksborg. A small village emerged
around the palace, consisting of
public servants and craftsmen who
worked in the castle. In 1733 a reconstruction
of the palace was
initiated to transform it into the
beautiful baroque style that we
see today.
Augustenborg Palace is Southern
Jutland’s largest and most complete
baroque construction and a wonderful
example of baroque’s stringently
symmetrical building style.
Today the palace is used as a
hospital, but the gatehouse holds a
small exhibition about the history of
the palace. You can visit the palace
church and the gardens.
Nordborg Castle was built in the
second half of the 12 th century, and
the builder might be Svend Grathe
(king from 1146- 57). The castle was
originally called Alsborg and was
built on an island in Nordborg Lake.
A small collection of houses - called
Købing – emerged around the castle,
Gråsten Palace
and only in the 1600s was the town
named Nordborg.
Today the Castle is used as an
independent boarding school and
is not open to visitors. However, you
can take a walk in the garden, where
there are boards explaining the
history of the palace.

Light along the coasts
There are ten lighthouses in Sønderborg
Municipality. Most of them
are from the time of German rule. In
1905 the German marine decided
to move its Baltic Fleet from Kiel to
new marine stations in Flensburg and
Sønderborg (the current sergeant
school). See p. 108-109.
The building of the many lighthouses
should therefore perhaps be
seen in this context. The lighthouses
helped ships navigate in the complicated
waters around Als; today this is
done by means of satellite-controlled
GPS technology.
The first lighthouse at Kegnæs was
built in 1845 and is the only one in
the area that was established before
the area came under German rule in
1864. After the war, the original lighthouse
was torn down and a new one
was built. However, the original light-

preserved. In 1920 the area became
Danish again and remained so until
the German occupation in 1940.
During the war, the lighthouse was
guarded by German soldiers, who
only lighted it up when German ships
were to pass.
Kegnæs Lighthouse is open to the
public and, during summer, you can

enjoy the view of, for instance, the
isle of Ærø, from the 18 metres high
tower.
Taksensand Lighthouse is another
of the area’s distinctive lighthouses.
It stands on the water’s edge and
its boulder foundation looks beautiful
together with the stony beach.
The lighthouse was built in 1905 and
was originally 32 metres high. In 1953
the lighthouse was reduced in hight
to 19 metres.
Ironically enough, an interesting
way in which to experience the
area’s many lighthouses is to go
geocaching and use the same GPS
technology that has mostly overtaken
the role of the lighthouses.
Geocaching is a kind of modern treasure
hunting where you use a GPS
to find little treasures hidden around
the landscape.

For Children and Childish souls
The Sønderborg area offers a
number of activities. Apart from the
activities we have lined up here, we
also have suggestions for lovely golf
and angling/fishing activities.
At the historical tilting-course,
every Tuesday during high-season,
you can see the knights ride, hear the
history of tilting-at-the-ring, see the
historical costumes and come close
to the horses. See p. 62.
The horse-drawn wagon rides in
the Gråsten Forests are for children
and adults alike. Enjoy nature on this
special trip in the forest. See p. 61.
According to legend, Pirate Alf
lived in the Gråsten Forests in the
1200s. Over the years, many people
have searched for his treasure that is
allegedly buried somewhere in the
forest, but so far no one has found it.
Bring your family on a treasure hunt
and listen to the legend about Pirate
Alf. See more on p. 61.
If you like animals, you are going to
love a visit to the coatis and the other
animals at Danhostel Sønderborg-
Vollerup. A charge of DKK 30 will
allow you to enjoy the many activities
on the hostel’s large playground. See
opening hours on p. 59.
The playgrounds in the area
provide your children with lovely outdoor
adventures. Here they can use
up a lot of energy, and the fresh air
is good for them. The terrain course
in the Nørreskoven forest lies in the
Vibæk Watermill
forest’s southern part. If you enter
the forest from the south, turn right
at the Skovbroen bridge and follow
Havvejen road to the water and the
terrain course.
If you are creative, you can visit the
Papirmuseets By in Gråsten or the
Stolbroladen farm in Svenstrup. Here
you will find lots of inspiration for
your own creations, and you can take
part in courses as well. Activities are
indoors, so this is great for a rainy day.

at Dybbøl Banke
At the Historic Battlefield Centre
Dybbøl Banke, you will get involved
in one of the most exciting chapters
of Danish history. Join the war of
1864, where the cannon thunder and
the scent of pancakes spread in the
soldier’s camp.
The Prussian soldier J. Bubbe is
excited about his new breech loader,
that fires its bullets with an enormous
velocity. Danish private Hansen is
pleased with his good, old muzzle
loader. It does not fire the bullets
with the same velocity, but it always
works! At the centre, you may be
so lucky as to overhear the cheerful
argument between the two soldiers
during the war between Prussia and
Denmark in 1864.
‘This type of presentation of
history is the centre’s hallmark’, explains
centre manager and curator
Bjørn Østergaard: ‘We present the
war of 1864 through the people who
took part in it. By the help of old
letters and diaries, we can show what
these people were like and how they
lived through the war.’
‘When visitors see, listen to and talk
to the historical persons, they experience
the war in a new and exciting
way. New people join the story all the
time; in this way we can renew and
vary what visitors come across at the
history centre.’
Not only the historical people are
active in the centre. Suddenly, you
and your family become a part of the
dramatic events yourselves.
While singing the Danish song
‘When I went to War’ and getting
loud commands, you march to the
stands, where you must cover your
ears when a cannon is fired with a
deafening bang. Later on you will
try out what it is like to lift a tremendously
heavy fortress cannon. You
enjoy yourself with pancakes and a
fire, you cast bullets at the smith’s
and write letters with a pen and ink.

The New Sønderborg Castle
You will not recognise Sønderborg
Castle when you visit it again. Over
the past 5 years, several new exhibitions
have seen the light - about the
imprisonment of King Christian II,
about the Dukes of Schleswig and
Holstein, about pre-historic finds and
ancient relics from Southern Jutland,
the ‘Southern Jutland Artists’ gift’ of
1920 and many more. Right now, the
museum is working on the renewal
of the exhibitions about Southern
Jutland’s modern history.
A novelty is the fact that the museum
has had well-known Danish
artists design the individual rooms.
In 2010 the exhibition Southern-
Jutlanders during WW I (Ingvar Cronhammar)
opened, and in 2012 the
exhibition ’Referendum and Reunification
of 1920’ (Poul Ingemann)
was inaugurated. ‘Southern Jutland
under German rule 1864-1914’ opens
in May 2013 (Poul Ingemann).
The museum is also testing different
audiovisual equipment: The exhibition
about the WW I uses sound
presentations, and QR-codes are used
in the exhibition on the Reunification.

Also other parts of the museum
have exciting news. The exhibition
about Christian II now contains a new
painting of the King by the German
painter Lucas Cranach the Elder (AD

see the Ahnentafel (ancestor table)
for Queen Dorothea and Christian III.
So, if you think you have seen
Sønderborg Castle, this might not be

Cultural life flourishes all year round
Cultural life flourishes all year round
in the Sønderborg area, and there
are many opportunities for going to
symphonic and rhythmic concerts.
We have exciting music festivals
and outdoor concerts from May to
September and Christmas concerts,
New Year concerts and the Electronic
Music Festival in the winter. You will

Sønderborg Summer Revue is
Denmark’s third-largest revue. Year
after year, a new turnout record is set,
and the revue was seen by more than
25,500 people in 2012. This year’s
revue’s title is ’Tested Positive’ and is
on at Sønderborg Theatre. See p. 56
for more information.
Around Easter the area has various
exhibitions and markets. The towns
are buzzing with life, and there are
loads of activities in the streets and
shopping centres. Keep an eye on our

No matter what time of year it is,
nature here is a true paradise and
has many exciting cultural monuments.
Pick up brochures on the
area’s forests at the tourist office.
The Gråsten Forests will give you a
lovely time in nature with their large
carp ponds and beautiful lakes. You
can spend a lot of time here enjoying
the rich birdlife. There are more
than 30 round and long barrows and
in the Gråsten Forests, and, if you
begin your journey from the parking
lot on Felstedvej road, you will pass
Hjertehøj, the area’s most impressive
Bronze Age mound.
The Nørreskoven Forest is one of
Denmark’s most beautifully situated
beech forests and borders the sea.
When you drive through the forest,
you will find many little side roads
leading to the water. More than 80
cultural monuments are registered
in the forest, and several dolmens
were restored in the period 1934-50.
The three long barrows close to the
Havrekobbelhuset house at Nørreskovvej
road are among some of the
most beautiful dolmens in the forest.

Beautiful Sea Trout
Along our coastline, you will find a
varying ocean floor where the many
stones provide hiding places for
beautiful sea trout. Large pikes wait
while being protected by plants and
reeds in the deep waters of lakes. If
you have not brought your fishing/
angling equipment, or if you need
the right wobblers, see p. 68-70.
All anglers from 18 to 64 years must
have a current fishing license if they
are going to make use of lakes, coasts
and the sea. You can buy your fishing
license at the tourist office.
Charge per day is 40 DKK /130 DKK
per week / 12 months DKK 185.
However, angling without a license is
allowed in fishing parks.

In the Footsteps of the Gendarmes
Hiking is a sport for everybody.
The following are some of the many
hiking trips that are not only good
exercise, but also lead you through
beautiful, unspoiled nature. See the
map on p. 42.

detailed leaflets on the various forests,
traces and paths.

FOR THOSE WITH A SPECIAL
INTEREST IN HISTORY:
1. The Gendarmestien gendarme
path (74 km) passes through some of
the most beautiful stretches of land
in Denmark and is a unique place to
hike. After the Reunification in 1920,
the border and shipping routes were
controlled by the border gendarmes.
Patrolling was done by foot along
the coast, and each gendarme had a
particular area under his jurisdiction.
The path begins in Høruphav on
South Als and goes via Sønderskoven
Follow the Gendarme Path along the Flensburg Fjord
(forest) and Sønderborg to the mainland,
past Dybbøl, Vemmingbund,
Broagerland, Gråsten, Rinkenæs and
Kollund to the German border. Most
of the path follows the coastline and
leads through a changing landscape
of forests, marshes and fields.
2. The Brickworks Path (3 km) goes
along the water, where the remains
of eight old brick factories can be
seen. The parking area by Cathrinesminde
Brickworks Museum is a good
starting point for your hike.

Nordic Walking along the coast
3. The trail at Stensigmose (3.5 km)
starts at Broager Strand Camping
and leads along the top of the bluff,
where there is a lovely view across to
Vemmingbund and Dybbøl Banke.
Here is a beach further along the
track and along Stensigmose Bluff,
which is known for its fossils.
4. On Dybbøl Banke a network of
paths will lead you through a beautiful
area around the historic entrenchments
from the war of 1864.
5. The Alssund Path (9.1 km) begins
at Alsion in Sønderborg. The path
goes along the western bank of
Alssund through the hilly moraine
terrain at Sundeved. The path is the
first part of the new path that will
go through Sønderborg town to
Blåkrog, where it will connect to the

6. The Nydam Path (7 km) starts at
Sottrup Storskov (forest). You can
follow a route along the water, leading
past the place where Prussian
soldiers embarked in rowboats to
capture Als in 1864, and past Sandbjerg
Manor, which the Prussians
used as a headquarters during the
war. Continue past Denmark’s famous
bog, Nydam Mose, where three boats
dating from around 310 AD were
excavated in 1863. One of the boats,
the Nydambåden, is exhibited at Gottorp
Castle, Schleswig.

INTEREST IN NATURE:
7. The Gråsten Forests. You can
either follow the marked hiking
route of about 6 km or you can plan
your own route.
7a. The Gråsten Path (9 km)
begins at the parking area opposite
the palace and goes along the water
through ’Dyrehaven’ (Deer Park) with
its many card sculptures, and across
the town square at the palace lake
and back to the palace.
8. The Fiskbæk Trail lies between
Adsbøl and Gråsten. There are two
routes - both start at the Gråsten
Landbrugsskole (agricultural school).
The yellow route is the longest one
– around 4 kilometers - and leads
you past Fiskbæk Manor to Roden
Forest, where foxes and deer can
often be seen.
There is a vantage point with an outstanding
view of Nybøl Cove.

9. The Nybøl Path (4.6 km) leads
through Nybøl to Denmark’s smallest
and most amusing forest – the Nøffelskoven
forest. This forest has many
funny, wooden figures and, among
other things, a barbecue hut. The
path then continues to Nybøl Cove.
10. The Heart Path (5.1 km) leads
you through Sønderborg town. If you
would like to avoid stairs, there is an
alternative route of 5.4 km.
11. Arnkilsøre (4 km) hiking route
brings you around the lovely area
between Alssund and Augustenborg
Fjord and through Arnkil Fredskov.

12. Sønderskoven forest has many
hiking options. On warm evenings
in May and June you can hear the
small, green leaf frogs croaking in the
ponds.
13. The Kegnæs path comprises
three routes of 6, 7 and 10 km, which
you can also combine into one walk.
Rich bird life and beautiful nature
await you on the peninsula.
14. The Tandslet Trail (4.5 km) lies
approx. one km north of Tandslet
village and goes through Tandsholm
forest along paths, past hedgerows
and woods to a vantage point with

16. Nørreskoven (forest) offers 3
marked routes of two kilometers
each and countless options if you
would like to plan your own hike
through the woods.

17. The Stevning Cove path (5.5 km)
is quite varied with stretches through
fascinating coppice forests, past
fields and on the beach at the water’s
edge.
18. The path at Havnbjerg Church
(2.8 km). Park by the church.
The hike is varied, with both nature
areas, cultural-historical places and a
wonderful view from one of Als’ highest
hills, 49 metres above the sea.
19. The Nordborg Lake Trail (6 km)
follows the water’s edge some of
the way and continues over a hilltop
with a lovely view across the lake,
the hilly landscape and Little Belt.
There are many opportunities for
bird-watching and enjoying the
beautiful surroundings along the
path.
19a. Gammeldam (2 km) takes you
around the Gammel Dam lake. Even
though a residential area surrounds
the lake, a rich birdlife remains.
20. Oldenor (4.5 km) is a reinstated
lake at Dyvig in the northern part
of Als. It was re-established in 1993
and has since become an Eldorado
for birds. Everyone can enjoy the
lake and its surroundings from the
vantage point on Færgevej.
21. Mjels Lake (4 km) has been dried
out and cultivated, but was re-established
in 2006, and there is already a
rich birdlife.
22. The Als Path (64 km) is the latest
initiative for nature lovers and leads
from Hardeshøj in the north, across
the island via the Nørreskoven forest
to Fynshav and along the east coast
to Mommark and Drejet in the south.
You will see some of the most beautiful
areas in the region if you choose
this path.

Wonderful bike rides
If you would like to go on a bike
ride, you are welcome to visit our
tourist office, where you will find
good maps and brochures about the
Gendarmstien path and the state
forests. At www.visitsonderborg.com,
you will find route maps and ideas for
your cycling holiday.
The area has many routes. The local,
regional and national routes take you
past the many attractions. See p. 46.
You can choose your routes yourself
among the many roads and paths in
the impressive hardwood forests and
let your route take you past the many
burial mounds and special attractions
in the Nørreskoven forests, Sønderskoven
forests or Gråsten forests.
The route through Nørreskoven
forest itself takes around an hour, but
you should devote 2-3 hours to it so
that you have time to stop and have

The Gendarmstien path (A) does
not allow you to cycle all the way,
but the detailed map of the path has
indications of alternative routes for
cyclists. The route leads you along
the water and through a beautiful,
varied landscape with hills, marshland
and meadows. You can obtain a
map from the tourist office.

If you fancy a longer bike ride, you
can take regional route 2, that takes
you from Sønderborg across Als to
Hardeshøj, where you can take the
ferry to Ballebro on the mainland.
From Ballebro you can either choose
national route 5 back to Dybbøl/
Sønderborg or one of the many local
routes along winding roads.
If you feel like experiencing the
local atmosphere, you can stop and
visit one of the intimate inns or visit
the little galleries, museums and collections
on your way.
Local route 21 is around 26 km long
and takes you around Broagerland.
From Broager and past Cathrinesminde
Brickworks Museum, Brunsnæs,
through the forest, past Gammelgab
and the beach at Vemmingbund.
Local route 24 is around 23 km
long and begins in Vester Sottrup.
It passes Nydam Mose bog, where
Conrad Engelhardt found three
boats, weapons, jewellery and coins
in 1863 that stem from antiquity. One
of the boats is known as the Nydam
Boat. On August 17 th a copy of the
‘Nydam Boat’ will be launched at
Sottrup Forest, which the bicycle
route also passes.
Route 28 starts at Chr. X’s Bridge
in Sønderborg and follows the Gendarme
Path along the water at Dybbøl.
Then it goes east past Nybøl and
Vester Sottrup towards Ragebøl, back
to Dybbøl and then past the Historic
Battlefield Centre and Dybbøl Mill.
Route 29 is a ride of just over an
hour and begins at Sønderborg
Castle. The route goes through the
Sønderskoven forest and through the
small village of Ulkebøl.

From there it leads to Arnkil, where
the battle of Als took place in 1864.
The peninsula has many warrior’s
graves.
The peninsula Kegnæs on southern
Als has a very nice 25 km route where
you can mostly cycle on the small
roads. Local route 31 will take you
across the peninsula, past Kegnæs
Ferry (a ferry sailed here to Høruphav
until 1969) and along the water to
Kegnæs Ende, where you can enjoy
the view of Høruphav and Broagerland.

The 28 km long local route 36
begins and ends in Augustenborg.
The route passes, among other
places, Ketting Nor cove, the Nørreskoven

Route 37 is a tour of northern Als
and begins in Nordborg. The route
goes past Holm, where you will find
the last existing ’Hook farm’ on Als,
‘Jollmands Gaard’ from the 1700s. It is
well worth a visit.

The route then takes you through
Dyvig past the re-established Mjels
Lake with its rich birdlife, to Havnbjerg.
You then go to the east coast
of the island and back to Nordborg.
In several places, the route takes you
over high hills where you can enjoy
the view of both Jutland and Funen.
The route is 37 km.
At the tourist office, you can collect
maps for Sønderborg Municipality
and Als, on which the routes described
are plotted in, although without
indications of route numbers.

Scenic Golf Courses
The area has three beautiful golf
courses: Alssund and Nordborg Golf
Course on the island Als and Benniksgaard
Golf Centre in Rinkenæs,
Gråsten. All three golf courses have
18 holes and lie in areas of natural
beauty, that may lead your attention
away from the game itself.
Here the game becomes a relaxing
experience where you can shake off
the stress of everyday life and enjoy
yourself.
The grass is always greener on the
other side of the fence – thus goes
the saying. In our area the grass is
actually greener than in most other
parts of Denmark due to the mild
winters, caused by our close proximity
to the coast.
The climate is gentle to the grass,
and it is no April Fool’s joke, when we
say that you can usually play on
perfect greens here already from
April 1.
A cup of coffee at Benniksgaard
Benniksgaard Golf Centre with its
hilly landscape, many little lakes and
fantastic view of Flensburg Fjord is
one of Denmark’s most beautiful golf
courses.
Nordborg Golf Club’s trees and
bushes are the ones that naturally belong
here. This area of natural beauty
has differences in level of 20 metres.
You can enjoy the lovely view of
Little Belt all the way to Funen, from
the highest point on the golf course.

Alssund Golf Course
A view across the water
The course requires a lot of the elite
player as well as of the bogey player –
especially in the highest areas when
there is a strong wind.
Alssund Golf Course is centrally located
at Augustenborg. The somewhat
hilly terrain with old windbreaks
and open stretches of meadow
provides an exciting and varied golf
course. You have a magnificent view
of the beautiful wetland at Mjang
Dam from the course.
If you are not a member of a golf
club, you can obtain access to a sixhole
par 3 course at Alssund Golf
Club at a charge of DKK 75. This
includes a driving range and a
putting green, where you can hit
the ball as much as you like.
Benniksgaard Golf Centre has
a nine-hole par 3 course and a
training course that you can use
as well even though you are not
a member of a golf club.

On April 2 nd and 3 rd , 1864 Prussian cannons on
Broagerland bombarded Sønderborg. Around
a third of Sønderborg town was destroyed,
and the residents were forced to flee.
The town walk takes you past buildings that
are linked historically to the year 1864 and
past locations were bombs landed and ruined
the town. The guide explains about the
locations of the Danish military installations
and gives examples of the ways in which the
inhabitants suffered and were subjected to
losses because of the bombardment.

The town walk goes through the old town
with its Art Nouveau style houses. We visit
the Tilting Museum, where we are welcomed

and walk through the palace garden, that lies

beauty directly by the Baltic Sea and is both
a marina and a fishing harbour with several
fishing cutters. Freshly caught fish are on sale

The campsite has kitchen, bathing and toilet

you will find a small selection of groceries and

Southern Jutland Specialities
Tasting local food culture makes your holiday more
colourful, and food from Southern Jutland are no
exception.
Try, for instance, our ‘Solæg’.
Eggs
Salt and pepper
Oil, vinegar
Shallots
Boil the amount of eggs you need for 20 minutes
(put a shallot in the water to give the eggs a beautiful
golden colour). Make a small crack in the egg
shells and put the eggs in very strong brine.
If the brine is strong enough for the eggs to float,
then they will be preserved for two-three weeks. If
you use a less strong brine and change it every day,
the eggs will be preserved almost indefinitely. The
eggs must rest for at least one day before you eat
them.
How to serve the eggs:
Each person shells his egg, cuts it through, lifts the
yolk and fills it with vinegar, oil, salt and pepper
and perhaps mustard. The yolk is put back - upside
down! Each half is eaten as two ‘titbits‘. Serve with
beer and aquavit.

anecdotes from the Southern Jutland kitchen are in
Sven-Erik Ravn’s book ’Sønderjysk Mad Mmm’
(in Danish only).

Domestic animals crossing border:
Dogs, cats and ferrets must have
a readable tattoo or be marked with
a chip and have a passport with a
statement from a veterinarian that
a vaccination against rabies has
been performed. Animals that do
not have the required papers will be
put in quarantine for six weeks at
the expense of the owner.
In Germany, domestic animals must
be brought into the country as cargo
that has been strapped in, sit in a
transport box or be safe behind bars.
The fine is minimum 35 euros.
Animal ambulance: 1812
Phone the animal ambulance if you
have come across a sick or injured
animal, if you see a dog in a parked
car on a hot summer’s day, if you find
a box with guinea pigs left behind at
a lay-by, etc.
