SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2011
Prevent Identity Theft
You think you’re careful about protecting your identity. You shred your bills,
you don’t respond to suspicious emails, and you never give any financial
information to anyone on the phone. One night you have dinner while
traveling and by breakfast the next morning your credit card information is
being used to make online purchases. You’ve just become a victim of identity
theft, likely at the hands of a restaurant employee.
According to Javelin Research and Strategy, 10% of US consumers have
been victimized. Further, the Identity Theft Resource Center reports that it
takes the average victim 30 hours to repair the damage and can cost about
$500 out of the victim’s pocket.
At Hudson Heritage, we take identity theft very seriously. Your identity is
yours alone and you can help keep it that way by following these steps:
• Never provide personal financial information, by phone or Internet, if you did not
initiate the contact.
• Never click on a link in an e-mail you think is fraudulent. The link may steal
your personal information, and may contain a computer virus.
• Don’t be intimidated by an e-mail or caller suggesting dire consequences
if you fail to provide or verify financial information.
• If you’re unsure whether a contact is legitimate, go to the company’s website
and type in its address instead of using a link in the e-mail.
• Report suspicious e-mails or calls to the Federal Trade Commission at
www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/, or call 1-877-IDTHEFT
(1-877-438-4338).
• If you fall victim to identity theft, act fast. Alert Hudson Heritage immediately.
Place fraud alerts on your credit files. Monitor your credit files and account
statements closely. Enrolling in ITAC Sentinel’s ® credit monitoring programs
will offer you protection and peace of mind.
Three Local Students
Earn Scholarships
Congratulations to Kelly Chadwick, Katherine Quinn, and Mary Hartford, three
graduating seniors who embody HHFCU’s “people helping people” philosophy.
As a member of the National Honor Society, a High Honor Roll student, and a
peer tutor, Kelly Chadwick has proven herself a model student. Kelly is active in
school clubs and sports, serving as the captain of Minisink Valley’s Varsity Volleyball
team. She demonstrates a commitment to her community, volunteering in nursing
homes, penny socials, the CROP walk, and local pancake breakfasts. Somewhere
in between it all, she finds time to gain real-world experience as an intern for an
environmental engineering firm. Kelly will be attending Marywood University this
fall, majoring in Elementary Education/Math-English.
Katherine Quinn is a Washingtonville High School senior who has demonstrated
excellent academic performance and involvement in her school and community.
Katherine is a star athlete who plays on the varsity soccer team and runs spring
track. She received a NYS Scholar Athlete award. Katherine helped host the
Washingtonville Senior Citizen Prom, serves as a peer tutor, and volunteers much
of her time working with children at local camps and elementary schools. She will
be attending Quinnipiac University this coming fall as a Nursing student.
Washingtonville High School senior Mary Hartford will be joining Ithaca College
this fall in the Physical Therapy program. She plays varsity lacrosse and crosscountry
track. Mary is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America
and she is highly regarded for her leadership and business achievements. Mary
has demonstrated her passion for learning as a member of the National Honor
Society and the Math and Science Honor Societies. We are certain that her
pursuits for excellence in education will continue in the years to come.
FINANCIAl MAKEOVER
Do your fiNaNcES NEED a facE lift?
It’s easy to get overwhelmed with money management
and the paperwork that goes with it. Here are 3 simple
steps you can take to gain focus on your spending.
1. ORgANIzE. Paperwork piled high? Sort your reports
and receipts to file, shred or deduct.
2. PUT YOUR WAllET ON A DIET. Lose credit cards
you’ve had for less than five years. It takes away
temptation to overspend and it won’t hurt your
credit score.
3. SEll, SEll, SEll. You’d be surprised how much you
can get for gadgets, books or even clothes you don’t
use anymore. Use the funds to start a new account
Hudson Heritage and Junior Achievement
Mentor Students in Financial Literacy
and Work Readiness
Employees from Hudson Heritage Federal Credit Union teamed up with Junior
Achievement (JA) of the Hudson Valley this spring to teach fifth grade students
at Mechanicstown Elementary School the basics of business and economics to
prepare them for successful futures.
JA’s work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy program brought
mentors into the classroom with engaging, hands-on activities to help inspire
students to achieve more in life.
Hudson Heritage Service Center Manager Toni Tierney said, “The volunteers at
Hudson Heritage are proud and honored to be part of the Junior Achievement
organization where we are able to mentor and enjoy the inspiring youth of today.”
“For our first lesson student entrepreneurs created products or services for
specific businesses. It was wonderful to see how creative the students were,”
said Bryanna Levine, Branch Supervisor at Hudson Heritage.
Hudson Heritage will deliver the program to over 120 students, with close to 500
students participating in the Junior Achievement program at Mechanicstown.
Volunteers bring their banking experience to motivate students to envision a
successful future and to encourage entrepreneurial thinking. By connecting
what they learn in the classroom to future goals, students see the relevance in
education, and how it will help them make smart decisions for their futures, and
to learn the steps to succeed in life.
Lyda O’Shea, Accounting Coordinator at Hudson Heritage acknowledged the
attentive and inquisitive nature of her fifth grade class. “This experience
is inspiring to me and the students and it validates the importance of
understanding business and economics in life,” she said.
The Junior Achievement program has operated at Mechanicstown Elementary
School for over 15 years, and demonstrates the innovative learning environment
the school’s administration encourages.
