Essential drugs l<strong>is</strong>t: by level of care<br />
There <strong>is</strong> a drug formulary by level of care <strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong>sued by the Min<strong>is</strong>try of <strong>Health</strong>, By generic<br />
name, there are 281 medications for PHC, 831 medications for Hospitals in addition to 9<br />
types of approved vaccinations in the formulary.<br />
Manufacture of Medicines and Vaccines<br />
Thirteen Pharmaceutical manufacturers are l<strong>is</strong>ted as approved in the MOH website and<br />
licenses for another three are pending.<br />
Regulatory Authority: Systems for Reg<strong>is</strong>tration, Licensing, Surveillance,<br />
quality control, pricing<br />
The Department of pharmaceutical control includes 3 sections:<br />
Technical affairs: Th<strong>is</strong> section <strong>is</strong> responsible for reviewing technical specifications of all<br />
pharmaceutical products used in UAE and their reg<strong>is</strong>tration and pricing. It also reviews<br />
all manufacturing companies to ensure compliance of their products with national<br />
standards. The section <strong>is</strong> also responsible for <strong>is</strong>suance of licenses and superv<strong>is</strong>ion of<br />
local manufacturers of pharmaceutical products.<br />
Local Pharmacies Superv<strong>is</strong>ion Section: Th<strong>is</strong> section <strong>is</strong>sues licenses to local<br />
pharmacies and drug stores and superv<strong>is</strong>es workers in these facilities. The section <strong>is</strong> also<br />
responsible for superv<strong>is</strong>ing the examinations of professionals responsible for these<br />
facilities, as well as preparing laws and regulations that regulate the private<br />
pharmaceutical sectors’ activities and ra<strong>is</strong>es such laws to the responsible authorities for<br />
approval.<br />
Superv<strong>is</strong>ion and quality assurance section: Th<strong>is</strong> section undertakes the<br />
examination of all imported pharmaceutical products to ensure safety and compliance<br />
with local specifications and standards. The examination <strong>is</strong> also applied to randomly<br />
selected samples from local pharmacies.<br />
Systems for procurement, supply, d<strong>is</strong>tribution<br />
Department of Supplies and Stores: Th<strong>is</strong> department <strong>is</strong> responsible for preparing<br />
the specifications and quantities of drugs and other pharmaceutical supplies needed by<br />
the min<strong>is</strong>try and follow-up international, gulf and local tenders. The department also<br />
monitors available supplies closely to ensure that no shortages of any item occur and<br />
that all items are received on timely bas<strong>is</strong>.<br />
A number of sections carry out the functions of the department. They include sections<br />
such as receipt and d<strong>is</strong>tribution of supplies and records, and reg<strong>is</strong>tries. Information <strong>is</strong><br />
kept under a secure electronic <strong>system</strong> and provided instantly to all related departments<br />
and outlets. There <strong>is</strong> a l<strong>is</strong>ting of 124 approved pharmacies in the UAE.<br />
8.8 Technology<br />
The central department of radiology summarizes diagnostic and therapeutic radiology<br />
services in UAE to ensure compliance to natural standards. The department develops<br />
these standards and provides advice on the specifications of equipment used in th<strong>is</strong> field.<br />
The department <strong>is</strong> also responsible for evaluating technical radiology candidates through<br />
examination before they are licensed to work in both public and private sector. The<br />
department formed four committees to undertake the responsibility of developing the<br />
