Dear Members of the GJHS Professional Learning Community:
Grand Junction High School
November 2012 Newsletter
Main Office-254-6900 Attendance-254-6911 Counseling-254-6914
It’s been a great start to the school year at the Home of the Tigers! We just wrapped up the fall sports season
and finished the first quarter. In mid-October, we hosted our annual fall Academic Letter Ceremony where we
recognized 120 students as Superintendent’s Scholars, 123 students with a 3.75 or higher grade point average
(GPA), and 132 students with a 3.5 to 3.74 GPA. At the end of the 1 st quarter, we published our Honor Roll and
423 students earned a GPA of 3.75 or above and 54 students earned a GPA of 3.5 to 3.74. Another 252 students
also earned a 3.0 to 3.49 GPA. Seventy three students had perfect attendance, 59 Tigers were inducted into
Chapter 5664 of the Tri-M National Music Honor Society, and 41 of our student-athletes were named to the
CHSAA All-Academic Team.
As you know, last year our school applied for and received a Colorado Legacy Foundation Advanced Placement
(AP) Incentive and Training Grant. Our Math, Science, and English (MSE) AP teachers have been busy
attending professional development training in Denver and conducting afternoon work sessions for their
students. A very important strategy and component of this program is the Saturday Study Session. Three study
sessions for each of the three content areas have been scheduled. In early November, Mrs. Lorena Thompson,
the lead teacher in the district for English Language and Literature teachers and our other English Language and
Literature teachers hosted the first district wide training. This session was well attended by our students and the
training was extremely valuable for both our students and teachers. Our goal is to get 90% or better of our
students to each of the remaining two sessions of English Language/Literature and 90% or better of our students
to each of the three math and science sessions.
We are approaching the Thanksgiving Holiday break and the middle way point of the 2 nd quarter. Winter sports
teams are in full swing. Our Music Department is preparing for their holiday concerts, and we will be finalizing
our School Improvement Plan, preparing for the second STAR reading and math assessment for 9 th graders, and
preparing for final exams.
There are many more success stories from the 1 st quarter. Please see the attached lists of students who received
academic letters, honor roll distinction, honor society recognition, and 1 st quarter perfect attendance.
Also, please see the remainder of this newsletter for recognition of individuals who excelled during the 1 st
quarter and for articles on topics of interest to our professional learning community. Until our next newsletter,
smile often, laugh a lot, be safe, and make a positive difference in someone’s life each day.

Senior Work Day
On October 10/11, the Counseling Team hosted Senior Work Days for the Class of 2013. Ten Colorado
colleges waived their application fees during that week. These efforts allowed the Class of 2013 to complete
301 college applications and save their families $6020 in college application fees. Military and Work Force
Center representatives were also on hand to assist our students. Nice work Class of 2013!
Help us Light the Night!
Grand Junction High School and Fruita Monument High School students are rallying to raise funds for solar
lamps which will be sent to entrepreneurs in India. Many people in India live off the grid (with no access to
electricity) and, as a result, normally rely on dangerous and expensive kerosene as a source of light. Annually,
1.3 million people die from this toxic air pollution and many impoverished families spend up to 30% of their
income on dim, flammable, inefficient kerosene. Last year, students raised over $9,300 and sent 467 solar
lamps to Kisumu County, Kenya through the organization ACE Development. We hope to surpass this amount
this year! If you are interested in donating (monetary gifts or auction items) or volunteering your time to this
cause, call senior Ellen Atkinson at 970-640-3806.
According to the Colorado Legacy Foundation and the National Math and Science Initiative,
one of the most effective strategies for schools and students participating in Advanced
Placement Incentive and Training Programs is the Saturday Study Session. Students who
participate in these study sessions are exposed to approximately 20 more hours of instruction
by master teachers. They are also exposed to content and test taking strategies that have
proven to be extremely beneficial to students taking the applicable Math, Science, and
Internet Safety for Kids: A Parents Guide
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office & Crime Stoppers of Mesa County will present this free class on Tuesday,
November 27, at 7:00 p.m. at the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. This class will cover how internet predators
target our local kids (with actual local cases), how parents can safeguard their kids on the internet, and what
controls are available for parents. The presenters will be talking about what mistakes kids and teens have made
in the past that exposed them to internet predators. The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging any parent who plans to
attend to please let them know by email via the www.mesacountysafekids.com website so they can get a good
estimate of how many class participants we may have. If the class gets too large, the Sheriff’s Department may
move the class to Grand Junction High School. If this happens, the Sheriff’s Office will email those parents
directly with this new information.
