Did you know? The informal headquarters of the CCCR/PCA and
Cent Coast 356 Porsche Clubs is located at the Black Horse Espresso,
1065 Higuera Street, SLO. There, a hard-core group nicknamed the
“Porsche Mafia” by Brent Smith of SGS, gather each morning, six
days a week. Attendance varies from a low of two to a recent high
of fourteen dependent on.... no particular reason. It doesn’t matter if
it is raining, windy, cloudy, sunny, foggy, blustery or anything else.
Somebody will be there ready to discuss cars, observe passing co-eds,
gripe about politicians, complain about parking tickets, wars, British
cars, French cars, Lucas Electrics and the cost of gas. Recent attendees
include members Swain, Len, Pekar, Borchert, Schumakers, Casella,
Meyer, Crosno, Bero, Kitamura, Milledge, DeVries, Howell, Mazzone,
Swauger, Smith, Thies and Prof. and Philosopher “Uncle Miltie”
Worthy who regularly lectures on the obscure and obtuse elements of
the English language and other worldly topics for which most of us
don’t and won’t understand and could care less about. We regularly see
visitors from neighboring Porsche Clubs from as far away as NJ, WI,
CT and other points from within Zone 8. If you have some spare time
from about 9 AM until 10:45 AM any day of the week from Monday
thru Saturday, c’mon down and join in the fun and camaraderie.
Did you know? New to our area? Wondering where to go to get
that niggling little problem fixed on your lovely steed? Check the
Coastalaire advertisers listings. We (and you) should support our
advertisers as they make it possible for us to publish our great and
informative monthly newsletter. In addition to this loyal group of
supporters there are some lesser known folks like Members Craig Smith
(Morro Bay), our 356 specialist and John Larson (West Coast Garage/
Santa Maria) who appreciate and keep our fine cars road worthy.
Board Meeting Notes – April 6, 2011
Driver Education
Jon Milledge
May 27, Friday, is the day of our annual Drivers Education event
at Buttonwillow Raceway Park. This event will start early in the
morning at 7:00 AM and end at about 5:00 PM. An entrant will
receive four 25 minute sessions on the track with an instructor, if
requested. New features: Going Solo - Student entrants will receive
a “Drivers Logbook” that they can use to chart their progress and
that we can use to determine when an entrant can enter without
an instructor. “Taste of the Track” - A person over the age of 18
can ride with an instructor “at speed” for five laps in the afternoon.
Instructors participating can take up to four “tasters” late in the
afternoon. All rides will take place in the two fastest groups where
there are no students. Club members that just want to see what
it’s like on a racetrack can participate. This is a way to explore
something new without committing a large sum of money. Entrants
that are students can sign up for this also.
Bob “Kit” Kitamura, Editor
One of our biggest events of the year is coming up on Friday,
May 27th, our Driver’s Education at Buttonwillow Raceway
Park. If you have not had an opportunity to experience your
Porsche on a track then I highly recommend that you do this. It
is safe, educational and exhilarating, all at the same time. And
for those of you that have not been on a track in a while then
it is time for you to experience it once more. The event flyer is
on page 10 with the registration form on page 11. I am looking
forward to seeing you there.
One of the must go to Porsche events is coming up later this
year. Rennsport Reunion IV sponsored by Porsche Cars North
America is going to happen for the first time on the West Coast
at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca. See the flyer next to this
article. I suggest you get your tickets early because there is a
good chance that it may sellout.
I found out something recently that still has me shaking my
head, at one of our ritual coffee sessions, Jason Len let us know
that Alois Ruf had just been in town, which of course peeked
our interest. Many of you remember that he was here a few
years ago and brought his famous Porsche CTR “Yellowbird’.
Now what caused me to shake my head was not that he was in
town to visit XK’s Unlimited….Jason’s place, that just proves
he knows the great car places to visit on the West Coast and
great car guys. He was actually here to pick up some Jaguar
parts. Apparently he has a passion for Jaguars. Here I thought
he was solely a Porsche-guy! This got me thinking, many of us
have a second car that is not a Porsche, not our family car but
our daily driver, track car, a fixer upper, garage queen, show
car or whatever. Let’s hear from you on what that is American
or foreign. If you have a digital photo, send that along as well.
Send it to coastalaireeditor@gmail.com. If they are interesting
enough you might see them here in the future.
We can accommodate up to ninety entrants. . Any entrant can
request an instructor even if they are not required to. In eight years
of running our DE, there has never been an injury related accident,
mostly due to the slow speed nature of the track, the training of our
instructors and the track layout with little drop off at the edge of
the track. This is no guarantee but in running DE’s since 1974, I
have never had or observed an injury problem.
Autocross
The Golden Empire region - Bakersfield - is having an autocross
at Buttonwillow Raceway Park on the Go-Kart track on May 8,
Mother’s Day; 8:30-9:30am Registration, $50 pre-registration,
$60 morning of event, $75 late registration - 11:00am. I’m going
and would caravan. Call me or email me..
Gimmick Rally
&
Lighthouse Tour
June 19, 2011
Port San Luis Lighthouse
Join the fun on an easy gimmick rally tour to the Port San Luis Lighthouse. There will be
clues along the tour to be answered at the famous old lighthouse.
In 2010 we had to turn people away because of the limited space, so we are doing the
tour again with a different gimmick rally. So please respond soon to reserve your spot.
The San Luis Lighthouse is perched on a hill overlooking one of the most beautiful
coastlines of California. It has been closed to visitors for several years, and then only to
a few hikers that braved the 2-½ mile trail. The Porsche adventurers will be taken by bus
to the top of the hill and the lighthouse.
We will be taken on a private tour of the newly restored lighthouse, completely furnished
in period furniture. We will then visit the “Horn House.” A private lunch will be served
with coffee and drinks included on linen covered tables. While dining you will be able
to watch the crashing surf on the rocks below. A short hike to the private beach that
served as the supply point for the lighthouse is an option for those that would be interested.
We will meet at the “Black Horse Coffee and Bakery” at 08:30 AM, located at 3590
Broad St. SLO. Bring layers of clothing, because the weather can be cool at the lighthouse.
Wear comfortable shoes, since there are stairs in the lighthouse.
The cost for all of this is $40.00 per person including your lunch. Space is limited so reserve
early. This is a fundraiser for the lighthouse. Make your checks to: “Point San Luis
Lighthouse Keepers” and not to PCA.This is a non-profit organization, so speak to your
accountant.
PORSCHE TECH
Your Tires at High Speed by Pedro P. Bonilla (GCR PCA)
Tire inflation specs are based on what the manufacturer
considers “normal” driving conditions. But, because of the
cars we drive and the Club we belong to, many of us have
the opportunity to go beyond “normal” driving conditions at
the track during the Driver Education events organized by
our PCA and other auto clubs in the area.
Let’s try to put it in perspective.
Even though we tend to think that properly inflated tires are
perfectly round, they truly aren’t. Because of the weight they
carry (vehicle, fluids and passenger(s)) , the bottom half
of the tire’s sidewalls bulge and the tread flattens where
it contacts the road. But on the top half of the tire, the
sidewalls straighten out and the tread curves back into its
molded round shape. This difference in shape between the
top and bottom halves of a tire is known as “deflection”. This
deflection will occur with every revolution of the tire, so picture
this: A 225/45/ZR17 tire could be considered a standard front
tire in a Boxster, Cayman or Carrera. This particular tire has
a 25 inch overall diameter and after doing the math we know
that this tire will turn approximately 807 times every mile. At
25 miles per hour this tire will roll 5.6 times per second, at 70
mph (speed limit on the Interstate) it will roll15.7 times per
second and at 140 mph (speed right before braking for turn
17 at Sebring) the tire will roll a daunting 31.4 times every
second. This means that the tire is changing its shape from
its unloaded to its loaded state and back every 3/100 th of a
second
This constant tire deflection plus the friction of the tire against
the road (track) generates tremendous heat build-up in the
tires. Since the tires are filled with air (or nitrogen) which is
a gas, Boyles Law demonstrates that if the volume of gas
is maintained constant, its pressure is directly proportional
to its temperature, therefore your tire pressure will go up as
the tire gets used, and the faster the tires spin, the faster the
temperature and therefore the pressure will build up.
The rule of thumb is that the tire’s pressure will increase by
1 psi for every 10° Fahrenheit increase in temperature, or 1
psi for every 4 minutes of use during the first 20 minutes of
operation.
All of the above to basically say that the faster you go, the
higher your tire pressure will be.
So, when we’re at the track or Autocross we must keep in
mind that we will have a tire pressure increase as soon as
the tires start to heat up. This will alter our car’s handling,
California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America May 2011
so we need to carefully monitor the pressure throughout the
different sessions during the day.
But how do we know what the ideal pressure is? We should
generally start with the recommended pressures from the
car’s manufacturer. Then, the tires will tell us if they need
more or less pressure.
Most modern high-speed rated tires have special markers to
show us the optimal tire patch.
This triangle tells us where the edge of the optimal tread wear
should be. As you can see above, the wear is a little short of
the marker, meaning that we have too much pressure.
Dropping a couple of pounds of pressure and then hitting the
track again gives us the optimal patch, as seen below where
the edge of the wear is right to the tip of the marker.
Also, always keep in mind that you should never inflate
beyond the tire’s maximum pressure, stamped on its
sidewall.
Gregg Fullmer and THE 914/6 GT
From the street outside the garage we heard that unique
and sweet sound: a 911 Porsche in full cry, down shifting.
Our eyes and ears weren’t in sync; the 914 that pulled up was
certainly not a 911; this was at least a 914/6. It turned out
to be Greg Fullmer’s very special 914/6 GT—an original factory
GT. The GT was a one-time, limited edition of only 48
914s, turned out mostly for racing by the Porsche factory in
1970. Complete with flared fenders to accommodate wider
tires, a built-in roll-bar, lighter body construction, racing
steering geometry, and most importantly, a more powerful
911 S motor. The mid-engine GT was designed to compete
with Europe’s best in all types of racing events and venues
and at a relatively affordable cost. Greg’s GT went directly
from the factory to the shop of the German stylist Glocker
where it was customized for the use of the chairman of Mahag
Motors, the ordering Porsches dealer. It is as original as it
was when it left the factory, except for exterior body paint to
cover the scars of years of racing in Europe and the US.
After more than five decades of driving and racing cars of
all makes, types and years, Greg finds himself with a beloved
Porsche that is forty years old: both are seasoned veterans
of decades of racing, touring, and just driving. Neither he
California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America May 2011
nor the GT are planning on retiring from fast driving soon.
Greg Fullmer grew up in Bakersfield where his father was
a petroleum engineer for Standard Oil. And growing
up in Bakersfield he grew up around cars: muscle cars, hot
rods, dragsters, and sports cars. At 14 Greg obtained an old,
flat head V-8 Ford and took it apart. A year later, with help
from friends and Auto Shop at Bakersfield High, he got it
back together and it ran. Greg knew then what he wanted to
do: he never looked back-- he was into cars for life. Greg had
real jobs of course, lots of them, but whenever possible they
always had something to do with motors and vehicles that
went fast and looked good.
After graduating from Bakersfield High School in 1962,
Greg served a hitch in the US Navy: afterwards he attended
community colleges in the Valley, and worked as a
self-taught automotive machinist. He later attended UCLA
and was accredited to teach at Junior colleges: He taught
auto mechanics at Bakersfield College for seven years and ran
his own automotive machine shop; Greg later spent 23 years
with the Kern County Superintendent of schools office. During
these years, Greg expanded his choice of racing wheels to
all types of sports cars.
He was equally adept
at drag strips and
autocrosses.
The ‘S’ curve at Laguna Seca
His first Porsche
was a 1967
Porsche 912 Targa. In
this car Greg eventually
became PCA
Class A Champion.
But he eventually
couldn’t resist the call
of the 911. Greg
drove, raced, and
modified almost every
911 Porsche made in
the 1960’s and 70’s.
And he drove in every
type of competitive event: time trials, ralleys, pro ralleys,
Monte Carlo events, autocrosses and track races—and on all
kinds of tracks and courses: dirt, mountain, street, banked
and at most tracks on the West Coast, including his favorite:
Laguna Seca. And he won or placed high in almost every race
he entered. At one point he even won The Sam Wang award
from Z8, winning at auto X, time trial & concourse, but
only 3rd in rally. And all in the same year and in the same
car.
(continued on next page)
In addition to his jobs in the daytime, working on cars at night, racing on
weekends, Greg devoted any spare time he had (?) to car clubs and to organizing
car events. Somewhere in between the cars and work, Greg also found
the time to get married and raise a family.
He was one of the founders of the PCA’s Golden Empire Region and
remained on the Board of Directors for 30 years and served five times
as President. If that wasn’t enough car stuff, Greg was also an active member
of more than a dozen other racing and sports car clubs, including NHRA, POC, the Alfa Club, NARA, FCCA, etc. etc. The
awards and trophies from the racing, club activities, concours, and shows fill a
large room.
few years ago Greg retired and moved from Bakersfield to Paso Robles where
A he has became an active member of the Central Coast PCA Region. He is
an accomplished photographer and, with lots of time on his hands these days,
has become a world traveler. But most of all he spends lots of time driving the
canyons, coast roads, rural back country in his favorite Porsche: the 914/6
GT. The GT, with racing number “572” still on the doors, is ready to go to the
track, but its value has shot up to six figures giving Greg pause. However he is
On two wheels in Phoenix
anxious to give anyone a ride through one of those canyons. So relax and enjoy the scenery: the passenger seat has its own fire
extinguisher and a SCCA race certified five-point seat belt. –miltworthy--
On Saturday, March 26, the CCCR Porsche Club, in an arrangement by Hamp Miller, joined the
BMW Club in a run to Oxnard, California, for a tour of the Mullin Automotive Museum, and, for
some, an additional tour of the Murphy Automobile Museum, a few blocks away. It was a splendid
afternoon, incorporating of a drive along a Spring Green Highway 101 and a visit to an extraordinary
venue.
The Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California, is certainly about cars—some of the most
expensive, rarest, and most beautiful cars in the world, but it is much more than that: it is a collection
of objects that is an expression of the idea that style, elegance, beauty, and exuberance can
be part of everyday life. In the period between the great World Wars, from 1919 to 1939, an explo-
14
sion of ideas about style, design, and a new
way of looking at “things” emerged in Western
Europe and the United States that paralleled
similar movements in art,
music, architecture, graphics,
literature, and dress.
The moderne and art deco
was born. The concepts of
speed, streamlining, organic
flow (the French Curve manner),
and “taste” were built
into the design of everything:
furniture, appliances,
houses, clothes, public
buildings, machines, and of
course, into automobiles.
And not just for the wealthy, but for a growing
middle class. And, as in many things, this
movement flourished most energetically in Paris:
the City of Light, and now the City of Style.
In his mu- seum Peter
W. Mullin has incorporated
these notions
of the art deco most
obviously in his superb
collection of French
automo- biles of the
1920’s, and culminating
in the over- whelmingly
stun- ning Voisin
Cabriolet submitted by
the French government,
as the epitome of
French industrial and automotive elegance, for
the New York’s World Fair in 1939. In addition to
the splendor of the mind-blowing restorations of
the Bugattis, Voisins, Delahayes, Delages, Talbot-Lagos
and Hispano-Suizas, there were also
displays of famous French race cars—many with
winning records. It was also important that these
masterpieces of car body design had to function
in a superior fashion as well as look great. This
period saw exceptional mechanical innovations
in machines of all types.
California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America May 2011
In keeping with Mr. Mullin’s interest in things
French, there were displays of French furniture,
ceramics, glass, sculpture, paintings, and photography.
According to
our most excellent tour
guide, the Museum is a
work in progress. Clearly,
it is worth a trip every
few years as the collections
and the displays
grow.
The only thing missing
on the Mullin journey
back into French elegance
was a really nice
bottle of Chateau LaFite-Rothschild—preferably
a 1973, the one with the label designed by
Picasso— a generous slice of Figue de Chevre
cheese,
and one of
Erik Satie’s
Gynmopedia
piano
pieces
playing in
the background.
