The Coastalaire April 2013
Prez’s Corner
Chuck Jennings, President
Last month I issued a caution to take it easy on our public
roads. This month I’m issuing a challenge: Unleash the
cheetah in your Porsche. Contradiction? Read on.
Before I discovered the magic of Porsche, I was that
“Corvette guy.” As I began to take more interest in Porsches,
I did a little comparative research on the 2012 911 versus
the C6 Corvette. Two of the best descriptive metaphors I
remember went something like . . .
The Corvette is a lion. The 911 is a cheetah. And . . . While
the directional agility of a Corvette is measured in inches, the
directional agility of a Porsche is measured in millimeters.
Of course, you know exactly what that means, right? As
is so often said, your Porsche was designed to be driven,
engineered to handle like no other car on the road. The
question is, do you really know just how well that is? Have
you fully experienced Porsche engineering? There is a safe,
easy and fun way to do it.
Mention autocross to some folks, and you might see a
wrinkled nose followed by, “Oh! I wouldn’t do that to my
car.” Do what to your car? Low speed autocross is the most
benign form of moving competition there is. And for most,
it’s not even a competition. It’s the best way to begin to learn
about your car’s capabilities. The most likely harm you might
do to your car is to wear a millimeter of rubber off your
tires. The only danger to yourself might be the little bruise to
your ego when you realize that, all along, your Porsche knew
more about performance than you did.
On April 20, CCCR will hold its first autocross event of 2013
at the Santa Maria Public Airport. Signup, come out, and
get to know your car at very little risk and minimal cost.
Oh! I almost forgot. Bring a metric ruler with you.
Editor’s Exhaust
Bob “Kit” Kitamura, Editor
Here I am watching the 12 Hours of Sebring in a hotel room
in Burbank while my wife is at a quilt show. I have resolved
that next year I am going to be at the 12 Hours of Sebring, a
much better way to spend a day.
Jon and the team are getting ready for our next autocross
event at the Santa Maria Airport, Teststrecke Porsche III. See
page 8 for more details. This will be a great event that is
done at relatively low speed but it sure is fun to go through
those corners as fast as you can go. If you own a Porsche,
you should experience this at least once in your life. It is
what your car is designed and built for!
This should be our last self-printed issue of the Coastalaire. If
everything goes right, the May issue will be a professionally
printed magazine. About three years ago our club decided
to lease a copier to print copies of our newsletter, as well
as have us label and mail them. I think it worked very well
for us, thanks to our printing, labeling and mailing team of
Milt and Barbara Worthy. We also thank Milt for helping
to underwrite a portion of the monthly rent for the copier,
Driving the concepts of tomorrow to your business today
The Coastalaire April 2013
as well as providing the space in his spacious storage-office
space where a number of his car collection resides. Now
he has room for another car! The reason we were doing it
ourselves is because of the cost-savings to the club. Fed Ex
has graciously quoted us a comparable price, for a much
nicer product. The outcome with having a better product is
that we have to be ready to print by the middle of every
month. So articles, event flyers, event information and new
ads have to be submitted by the first of the month. This will
make it a little harder for us but the rewards will be worth it.
Our breakfast at Scotty’s has been growing in number every
month. If you get a chance we meet there every second
Saturday of the month. See details on page 20.
As a reminder, we are always looking for stories and articles
from all of you. You can contact one of us and we will help
you write it. I hope to hear from you soon.
Happy 50th
Anniversary!
Porsche 911
Early in the morning of September 10, 1963, in the
commodious, hot, overcrowded Frankfurt Convention
Center, a small pavilion displayed a single, yellow
sports car. This was Porsche AG’s first public presentation
of its long anticipated successor to its hugely
successful Type 356 car, then in its 15th year of production.
Although still sought after by car aficionados
around the world, the 356 was getting a little long in
the tooth and was already considered obsolete technology
by automotive experts and journalists.
The pushing, sweating mob which had waited for
hours for the doors to open surged around the new
Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Sports Car; the elegant, powerful
new Ferraris; stylish Alfas; the new stunning E-Type
Jaguars, and scores of cars from dozens of manufacturers.
From among the thousands in the car-crazy crowd,
the professional engineers and automotive marketing
representatives from around the world quickly gravi-
Bill Irving’s 1967 Yellow 911
The Coastalaire April 2013
by Milt Worthy
tated to the Porsche display and the new Porsche 901-
-soon to be redesigned the 911 because of copyright
conflicts with the Peugeot Company. It looked different
from the venerable 356, but at the same time it was
satisfyingly familiar; its legacy was obvious, and to the
discerning, it was seemed to augur the future of Porsche
motor cars. Those who picked up a brochure and
spec-sheet could tell at a glace this wasn’t the rumored
upgrade to the 356; this was a totally new Porsche with
Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche
design subtlety that honored its past.
The 901/911, trumpeted the spec-sheets, was powered
by an air-cooled, rear mounted, overheard
cam, six cylinder engine. The brakes were large disc type
and the 5-speed transaxle, the suspension and steering/
front-end geometry were all new, incorporating the latest
automotive technology. The eager crowd also read
about the new commodious cabin and a useful luggage
compartment. The multitude could see these marketing
claims realized in sleek steel for themselves for the first
time. The spec-sheet also described the horsepower of
the new engine and the car’s top speed. At last this was
a Porsche that could hold its own on the autobahns and
autostradas of Europe. This Porsche could drive in the
left lane with Jaguars, Ferraris, and Mercedes and not
have to cringe in shame, or fear the dreaded flashing
light in the rear view mirror.
The yellow, No. 5 prototype 911 Porsche sitting serenely
atop the dais didn’t get to Frankfurt without
a superhuman amount of work, worry, and midnight
oil. The Strum und Drang surrounding the birth of
the 911 is worthy of a novel. And it couldn’t have
13
gotten to its place in the sports car hall of fame without
Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche, the grandson of Dr. F.
Porsche who was the clan patriarch and founding force
of the Porsche enterprise. Butzi Porsche, only 28 at the
unveiling of the 911, had joined the Porsche Design
Department only a few years before. He was put under
the leadership of Irvin Komenda who had been with
Dr. F Porsche since the early 1930s. As the design team
struggled with solidifying a viable concept of their new
Porsche, irresolvable conflicts eventually arose between
the old ideas (Komenda) and the new (Butzi). The generational
and design differences became so divisive that
Ferry Porsche, head of Porsche AG and son of Der Alte,
made a crucial decision to give his young son a greater
role in the evolution of the new car. And not because
of any nepotistic impulse, but because Ferry Porsche
saw that Butzi’s ideas were leading the team in the right
direction.
Through all the design and technical arguments, and
all the emotional turmoil (the design team was under
great pressure—the company’s future was at stake)
Butzi emerged as the design and concept leader and, in
the end, brought together the right mixture of designers,
modelers, engineers, technicians, and management
skills to force the right design at the right time by sheer
force of will and personality. Butzi continued to demonstrate
the same design and leadership skills at Porsche
for the next 50 years. He died last year at age 71. His
personality and design imprint will shadow this year’s
celebration of half century of the 911.
A
few years ago Porsche AG had designated 2013 as
the 50th Anniversary Year for the 911, not 50 years
after the first production models went into the show
rooms. This was partially in honor of those nervous
designers and engineers who were present when the first
911 was shown to the public. Their job was over; it now
up to the production and sales departments to make the
car a commercial success and recoup the heavy investment
made over the past decade.
Although a half century has gone by since that fall
day in 1963 when the yellow 911 sat on the display
podium, one can still buy a new 911 today that
has the same rear engine configuration and has the
The Coastalaire April 2013
same silhouette: it is in many ways the same car, but its
creature comforts and internal gear are vastly changed,
improved, and made more reliable—albeit much more
complex. The new 911 is safer, quieter, and has more
room, and it has an array of electronic controls and
gadgets that would have been almost impossible to
imagine in 1963. There is a downside to all this incredible
technology: the new Porsche 911s, to some, may
have also traded away the directness, the close personal
feel the owner experienced driving a simpler Porsche;
maybe this is also just nostalgia talking. The new 991
version of the 911 is also 10 times more expensive than
that first one, even taking 50 years of inflation into consideration;
however, there seems to be no lack of buyers
for the 50th Anniversary models—there is currently a
waiting list at most dealers for 2013 models.
The CCCR and the Coastalaire will join the worldwide
celebration of this masterpiece of technology,
performance, style, and design longevity. The Coastalaire,
with input from all those who own or who have
once owed a 911, will feature articles and stories about
the 911 for the remaining months of 2013.
Coastalaire would like to hear from any
present or past 911 owners who have an
early, special, or unusual 911, e.g., a 911
with very high mileage, or an all original
car, or has an unusual history—bought
in Germany, shipped to South Africa, and
driven throughout the USA, for example. Or
interesting family trips in 911’s. Send your
stories, vignettes, anecdotes, and recollections,
This list is only representative; more that 150 911s are currently listed by PCA National as owned by CCCR
members. The “??” stands for an unidentified Porsche 911 year. If any reader owns one of these missing
years, please let the Coastalaire editors know about it. If there are any very special 911’s out there, also let
us know. For example, Doug Brown’s fabulous 2004 Carrera GT is not a 911, but is designated a “Carrera.”
How do we classify his car? And where do we put the 912? Is it an early hybrid? --a four cylinder
356 engine in a 911 body?
PORSCHE TECH
The “next” Porsche track car by Pedro P. Bonilla (GCR PCA)
Ten years ago I wrote a business plan to build track/race cars from
the first generation Porsche Boxster (986). I really believed that it
would happen because this platform was the ideal and logical one
for many reasons. Porsche made nearly half a million (500,000)
Boxsters, which means that they will not be classics and therefore
their prices are very affordable. You can purchase a 1997-1999
Porsche Boxster for as little as $5,000 in good running condition.
Because there are so many of them, used parts are very easy to
purchase and are priced reasonably. This includes engines,
transmissions, brake components, wheels, hard tops, body panels,
etc., etc.
These first gen Boxsters all came with the 2.5 liter flat six engine
producing 201 HP.
This engine was designed to carry the nearly 3,000 lbs. of weight
of the OEM Boxster.
Engine
But when you reduce over 600 lbs. by eliminating the carpets, the
seats, the lining, some of the wiring, gutting the doors, removing
the A/C and Power Steering systems, etc., etc. then the power-toweight
ratio all of the sudden becomes very attractive.
Gutted interior
Some weight needs to be added back with a safety roll cage, racing
seat(s), safety harness(es), fire extinguisher, etc., but the car can be
brought to under 2,500 lbs. without too much problem
Interior
You can build a very basic car, or you can really option one out.
Some of these cars are built to run in the popular and fast-growing
BSR (Boxster Spec Racing) Series and therefore must meet the
very stringent spec requirements. These racing specs allow for
some changes in the suspension and exhaust and also allow for
some engine protective gear such as extended oil pans, IMS
bearings, Accusumps, external oil and transmission coolers and an
extra water radiator, as you can see from these images.
Obviously, those that are just track cars or DE cars don’t have to
conform to the strict BSR rules.
Many enthusiasts have built their own BSRs in their own garages,
but there are some independent shops and race shops throughout
the country that are now offering to build for you or even sell you
an off-the-shelf Boxster Spec Racer as the three from TuneRS
Motorsports shown below.
I’ve just returned from the 20th Anniversary 48 Hours at Sebring
PCA Club Race which, by the way, is the largest Porsche Club
Race in the world, and I was extremely happy to see how many of
these wonderful cars had been converted to full-blown race cars or
to dedicated track cars. The workmanship on some is fantastic and
they are truly works of art.
As one of the two Tech-Inspection Co-Chairs of the event, I had
the opportunity to see them up close and personal and to talk with
their owners and builders. Everyone agrees that these BSRs are
VERY fun to drive on the track. Because of their mid engine layout
they have great stability, they are extremely quick through the
corners and their brakes are legendary. The BSR is now accepted
as a class by many racing clubs and groups throughout the US,
such as: PCA, POC, PBOC, SCCA, and NASA among others.
