President’s Message
Bruce Bero, President
The issue of the “Coastalaire” offers reviews and
coverage of both the Avila Beach Concours held last month and
the New Member BBQ held on the 14 th .of November.
The New Member BBQ was to say the least a most
successful event. Much thanks to Ken and Brenda Daniel and their
crew for all of the food prep and decorations. There were 102 meals
served to the membership and guests. Those in the know seem to
think this was the largest club attendance in recent memory.
All of the food that was left over was delivered to the
homeless shelter in time for Sunday night’s meal and was much
appreciated.
This past year has seen the membership continue to grow
and we have enjoyed much more membership participation at all
events. One can only assume and hope that this trend will continue
as new and challenging events are planned for the coming year.
I would like to thank each board member and committee
Editor’s Exhaust
Bob “Kit” Kitamura, CCCR Editor
Well this has been quite a year, we had some great
events with great attendance by all of you. This next year
will once again have some great events. All of us involved
with the Coastalaire certainly have had a good time creating
a monthly communication document for all of the members.
Milt, Bob, Jane and myself hope that we can do even better
for all of you this next year. We really appreciate those of
you that have been able to provide photos from events and
are even willing to write stories. We hope you continue to do
that.
I hope some of you had a chance to go to the LA
Auto Show at the LA Convention Center. This year there
were a couple very nice concept cars. I went on Sunday, the
last day of the show which I try to do when I go. Of course I
had the assignment of looking for a new SUV or van for my
wife, I won’t tell you about that side of the trip. The journey
through the Porsche display is always a joy, definitely a
trip through a candy store. The last day of the show is not
as crowded and you are able to see and sit in cars they do
not allow on the busier days. The hit of the show for me
was not a Porsche (I know, sacrilegious!), it was a Lotus.
The Lotus Elite will not be out until 2014 and even if I was
patient it will cost somewhere north of $160,000. So I may
be buying another Porsche then, like the Cayman R. I was
very impressed with it except for the color, Peridot Metallic.
The cute attendant said she liked it and that it would grow
on me, I told her it was the same color as my mom’s kitchen
appliances.
California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America December 2010
member for their efforts and dedication for working together
for the benefit of the membership. Such things as the mailed
“Coastalaire,” email blasts and updated website have greatly
improved communication within the club with the net result being
greater participation which has always been a primary goal.
I trust all members and their families enjoyed the
Thanksgiving holidays and are looking forward to the coming
Christmas season.
The club Holiday party on December 4 th will kick off
a new year for the CCCR/PCA with the introduction of the new
board, all of whom are enthusiastic and optimistic for 2011.
Again allow me to say “Thank You” for everyone’s
efforts and may you all have a safe and “Joyous Holiday Season”
Notes From the Activities Chair
GETTING THERE IS HALF THE FUN.......................
Or maybe even more than half! Isn’t driving our Porsches
fun? Challenging, too, I’ll bet! Dozens of wiggly roads in our
territory, just begging to be attacked and conquered. You can
find them all yourselves, or you can let your club do it for you,
We do a lot of that sort of helping here in PCA’s California Central
Coast Region. We are, after all, a car club. Our cars are what
attracted us to this club, and driving and showing and taking
care of our cars is what we do. CCCR’s activities are designed
to help in that “doing”. We have tours and rallyes and concours
and driver education and tech sessions, all designed to make
your Porsche owning more pleasurable for you. Sometimes
we just polish them and show them around; sometimes we just
get in them and drive somewhere; sometimes we engage in
competitions with them, with the object to compete with other
Porsches (or other, lesser, marques) and be somehow better than
“them others”. It’s supposed to be all in fun, but sometimes
the competition gets hairy, with adrenaline surges getting
involved. CCCR hasn’t sponsored its own time trials, club races,
autocrosses, TSD rallyes, and the like, at least not in a while, but
a number of our members regularly compete in other PCA
regions’ (as well as other car clubs’) like events. And, you know
what? They’re having fun doing it, despite these events’ competitive
nature (or, maybe, because of it--heck, everybody wants to win).
In CCCR, our “competitions” are typically of a lower-key
variety. We still want to “win”, but that winning doesn’t always
involve suspension-tuning, engine modification, or “cornering the
Q-Tip market” (ask any serious Concours competitor). Most of the
time our “competition” involves little more than waxing the outside
of our car, trying to find the winery described in a vexing rallye
instruction, or trying to build a winning poker hand on the way to Pozo.
And, speaking of Pozo, that’s what the title of this article suggests.
It’s fun enough just to drive straight to Pozo, but, add in a few
more challenging roads, and possibly a requirement to identify a
few landmarks along the way, and, Bingo! More fun getting there!
Some years ago the CCCR Board was sitting around wondering
how to increase participation in the region’s activities, when
the secretary offered the opinion that “these people will go
anywhere, as long as there’s food involved”. Herewith, another
“Bingo!”. That’s why we go to as many eateries as we do.
But we don’t just GO there--we have fun doing it! Off to
Parkfield’s cowboy brunch, finding our way over those
neat, snaky, north county roads. Likewise Pozo (see above).
Whichever member plans our activities (and I hope
many of you out there will get involved in such
planning [see my previous pleas]), should keep that in
mind—go somewhere where we can nosh a bit (or a lot), but provide
California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America December 2010
some driving entertainment along the way. Lord knows, we’ve got
the roads to provide such entertainment, and, certainly, not just in
north SLO County. Some of the roads between Santa Maria and
Lompoc are just unbelievably neat to drive, and there are some great
restaurants to end up at (yes, I know--unbelievably bad English).
‘Nuf said! Fun restaurants, fun times getting there. Maybe it’s
ALL the fun--the getting there, that is!
Oh, and speaking of wiggly roads, the second (and last) Snake Tour of
the year will take place on Saturday, the 11th of December, beginning
in Morro Bay, right after our regular breakfast at Dorn’s. See you
there, even if the event STARTS at the eatery, rather than ending there.
Avila Beach
Concours d’Elegance
These are my observations of the Avila Beach Concours (ABC) event that occurred from
Thursday, October 28th to Sunday, the 31st. Bruce Bero and I met with the ABC Board on
several occasions, upon their request. We were confident in what PCA could do to help, such
as advertising the event through the Coastalaire, both on-line and in print, provide Volunteers,
and provide a modest monetary donation (we gave no specific or guaranteed amount) toward
trophies. The ABC board appreciated this effort and was impressed when they saw the actual
Ad copy in the Coastalaire. The ABC Board requested we pass on their appreciation to the
CCCR PCA Board for their help and assistance in the event. Despite the difficult economic
environment and rainy weather the ABC was a success according to Wes Hatakeyama and
Rob Rossi.
Thursday Night attendance was vibrant despite a poor weather day. I think I saw most all
of you there that evening and we were treated to some beautiful cars. I enjoyed the British
cars, just glad I don’t have to work on them. I visited with many of our PCA members
who said they came to the event based on the invitation they saw in the Coastalaire printed
version. Congrats to those of you who worked hard on the event. Saturday, I attended the car
display downtown on Garden Street, it is always cool to see beautiful cars parked together in
Downtown SLO. I leaned back and watched little kids with their parents taking pictures next
to the cars and it reminded me of being a wee lad doing the same with my dad.
Saturday night was a blast. In particular I enjoyed the Simulator. I tried my hand at the slot
cars as well, but was destroyed by a couple of 8 year olds. My Hospice donations to the
Simulator brought better results. After weeping over my poor time of 1:54 at Laguna Seca in
a Radical V8 (hard car to drive in real life and even more difficult on a simulator), I decided
to make another donation and try again. Everything came together for one magic lap and my
1:34 stood the rest of the evening, the reward was a wine tasting party at Jada Winery in Paso,
so I have that to look forward to. Cool to see the cars of those who were brave enough to bring
their cars to the Lawn for showing, even though the weather was beginning to threaten. Jim
Eckford’s Street Drag Car is Awesome!!!
Sunday’s weather was not cooperative. Despite the rain I was amazed that most of the cars
showed up. Many of the exhibitors mentioned their cars had never been out in the rain, but
now they knew where the leaks were. Dr. Rene Bravo commented he would not have come
out in the rain, except for the fact this was for Hospice and thus he felt compelled to participate
despite the weather. Attendance in the corral was weaker than anticipated, yet when I queried
those in attendance many thought they might get stuck because of the rain and thus parked
out on the street,... understandable. My AWD Cayenne did not seem to struggle with the wet
grass. : ) The Food and Wine tent was an Oasis and frankly for $75 I thought it was a bargain,
especially considering you are contributing to Hospice. There were more Motorcycles and
Race Cars as well this year. Thanks to Marla, Dalna and Sanja for working the PCA tent and
Dave Mills for calling out sales of Umbrellas! If the ABC Board continues their efforts I am
sure this event will grow in the future. It is a beautiful venue and its reputation will grow!
Thanks to the CCCR PCA board for participating and supporting the event.
The four day event had many CCCR members
assist with the events. While Bruce Bero, Sanja
Brewer and Bob Kitamura helped to direct
parking at Turley Winery in Templeton on
Saturday for the Tour through Wine Country, Jon
Milledge and Dave Mills helped to run the Time
Letter of Appreciation from Hospice
I want to express my gratitude and appreciation
by the Board of Directors and Staff of Hospice
of San Luis Obispo County for all the support
we received during Avila Concours d’Elegance
from the Central Coast Porsche Club. Your club
members support of our organization through
their registration and participation in the 4 days
of events means a great deal to all of us and the
clients we serve.
This was my first Concours event. While
my primary passion is for the Hospice SLO
organization and my primary purpose is to
generate funds to continue to provide our services
at no cost the community, I also have come to
understand the complexity and value of an event
such as this.
All non profits are being faced with an economic
downturn and more challenges raising funds. It
is only through support by community members
that we can meet these challenges. Your club’s
willingness to help support our organization
financially through securing sponsorship of
the trophy this year was very gracious and
appreciated. The volunteerism by the Porsche
Club members was quite impressive and certainly
helped make this year’s event possible. Thank
you for all your help with the Rally and Tour
events.
Over the next weeks, I look forward to the
opportunity for all those who were involved in
this year’s event to provide feedback regarding
the “good, bad and ugly” about the 2010
event………….. I look forward to this candor
from your club and hope you will pass along our
gratitude for supporting Hospice SLO.
Respectfully,
CCCR NEW MEMBER BBQ
story by Milt Worthy photos by Chuck Jennings & Milt Worthy
In the early 1800’s, the Spanish and Mexican ranchos, along La
Valle de Los Osos, would throw a party at the drop of a sombrero and
for almost any occasion. These Central Coast Californians— who
called themselves “Los Californios”-- were proud of a wonderful
tradition which welcomed new arrivals and distinguished guests
who had strayed into the Valley of the Bears by holding a fiesta.
These fiestas might last several days and featured musical contests,
dancing, a rodeo, and lots of food cooked on an open iron grill.
The California Central Coast Region of PCA continued that great
tradition of welcoming newcomers by holding a Porsche Fiesta in
their honor on Sunday, November 14 th . Well, at least the part about
the fatted calf on an open grill: dancing, rodeo, and music were
deferred to another day. And no horses showed up, only three or
four dozen Porsches were hitched along Fairchild Way.
Fairchild Way in Los Osos had never seen so many Porsches. More
than 50 cars and 100 CCCR members and associates descended on
Rick Johnston’s garages in Los Osos for the California Central
Coast Region’s annual celebration of the club and its 2010 new
members. New members, recent members, and lots of old, old
members assembled in this seaside village for an old fashioned
BBQ and pre-holiday get together. Jim Collins and Milt Worthy
opened up their garages for the occasion. And Rick Johnston and
his wife Mike made a large adjoining facility available for the
picnic area. Ken Daniel, a CCCR member of long standing, was
in charge of the menu and preparation of the victuals. Ken’s wife,
Brenda, along with several Associate Members took care of the
table settings. Jane Worthy and Don Weegar set up a wall projector
system and showed car movies (provided by Bob Kitamura and
Bob Mayberry) during the dinner hour. The food, the day, and the
celebration were superb. In short, it was a ursine day in Los Osos:
beautiful sky, temperature just right, and only a slight breeze from
the Bay-- the perfect day for banana fish and a Porsche Picnic.
Jim and Ann Collins’ garage—next to the BBQ area, was an
open invitation for everyone to view Jim’s collection of muscle
cars, three classic Corvettes, a 997 Porsche Carrera, and a 1947
Pontiac Woody Station Wagon, under going meticulous restoration
and modification. The Dodge and Plymouth muscle cars and the
Corvettes are winners of several dozen awards locally and at
venues around the state. Parked in the streets and in the building
parking lots was an impressive collection of CCCR Porsches:
911’s from the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. There were also several
newer vintage Carreras, a couple 356’s, a 914, Alyce and Bob
Mayberry’s 928, and Doug and Judy Brown’s 2002 fabulous silver
Carrera GT. A dazzling trio of bright yellow Porsches owned by
Ed Swain, Hamp Miller and Paul Fasching were lined up together:
they looked liked over sized canaries waiting to be fed. For the
boys among the men, Rick Johnston and Milt Worthy supplied
adio controlled cars for driving on an impromptu track set up by
Rick. And above it all, Forest the Pilot took pictures of the whole
event from his remote controlled model airplane.
For the wonderful Sunday BBQ and for the gathering of new
members and greeting old friends, there are lots of people to thank:
Paul Fasching, first and foremost, for planning the whole things
and for making sure that all the pieces were in place. He was
ably assisted by Hamp and Sue Miller, Bruce Bero, Ed Swain, and
many, many others. Special applause to Rick Johnston for making
his entire building and parking lot available. To Ken and Brenda
Daniel for doing such yeoman’s duty over a hot grill. The food
was cooked and served to perfection. A splendid day in the sun.
Who doesn’t love a good BBQ with new acquaintances and old
friends? Los Californios would have fitted right in and probably
would have added dancing and guitars to the celebration. Maybe
next year, when we welcome the 2011 new members, we’ll invite
some Californios.
PORSCHE TECH
Reading Our Tires by Pedro P. Bonilla (GCR PCA)
There is a lot of useful information included on the sidewall of
our tires. We’ll try to simplify it by taking it one part at a time.
DATE OF MANUFACTURING
Tires actually have a shelf life. It is recommended that
tires over 6 years old be removed from use. Obviously, tires that
are subject to permanent UV damage from the sun can deteriorate
sooner than those that are protected from the sun’s rays.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) in particular
the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has
required tire manufacturer’s to stamp the date of manufacture right
on the tire’s sidewall, but they’ve allowed them to code that information.
Prior to 2000 manufacturers could stamp the code on the
inside of the tire, but the NHTSA mandated a few years ago that
the code be moved to the outside of the tire, allowing the manufacturers
to phase in this information with a deadline of 2009.
Since 2000 the last four digits of the TIN (Tire Identification
Number) includes the week (first 2 digits) and year of manufacture
(last 2 digits).
Let’s look at the following TIN: DOT H2LF YA9J 3507
LI Lbs Kg
80 992 450
81 1019 462
82 1047 475
83 1074 487
84 1102 500
85 1135 515
86 1168 530
87 1201 545
88 1235 560
89 1279 580
LI Lbs Kg
92 1389 630
93 1433 650
94 1477 670
95 1521 690
96 1565 710
97 1609 730
98 1653 750
99 1709 775
California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America December 2010
The last four digits 3507 tells us that this particular tire
was manufactured in the 35th week of the year 2007.
Prior to the year 2000, only three digits were used. The first 2 were
for the week, but only one digit was for the year, so there’s no way
to determine from what decade that last digit is from.
In this TIN: DOT EJ8J DFM 408
The last 3 digits 408 tells us that the tire was manufactured in the
40th week of 1998 (or 1988, 1978, 1968...).
SERVICE DESCRIPTION
On the sidewall, you will also find tire’s Service Description which
identifies the Load Index and the Speed Rating.
Let’s study the following example: 225/40ZR17 94Y
The first part corresponds to the tire’s physical size (more
on that later) and the last grouping corresponds to the Load Index
and Speed Rating.
The 94 corresponds to it’s load carrying capability. In
this particular case an Index of 94 corresponds to a load of 1477
lbs (670 Kg). The higher the Load Index (LI) number, the higher
the tire’s load capacity is.
The typical Load Indexes for passenger cars range from
70 to 110 (following is a sample):
LI Lbs Kg
100 1764 800
101 1819 825
102 1874 850
103 1929 875
104 1984 900
105 2039 925
106 2094 950
107 2149 975
108 2205 1000
109 2271 1030
16
The “Y” is the Speed Rating, which in this case signifies
that the tire’s maximum speed is186 mph (300 kph).
If this Speed Rating were in parentheses) i.e.: (94Y) it
would signify that the tire has been tested at speeds in excess of
186 mph (300 kph).
When Z-speed ratings first appeared on tires, it was
thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be
required, in excess of 149 mph. Because high performance automobiles
keep getting faster and faster, the industry added W- and
Y- speed ratings to indicate the tire’s maximum speed:
W = 168 mph (270 kph) and Y= 186 mph (300 kph).
Elsewhere on the sidewall there is still more information, such as
the Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG) Standards. These Standards
spell out the Treadwear, Traction and Temperature (Resistance)
Grades.
TREADWEAR: Is a relative number because it indicates the relative
wear compared to a test tire.
What’s important is that the higher the Treadwear number the longer
lasting the tread will be.
TRACTION: Indicates the tire’s straight line wet coefficient of
traction. This grade does not evaluate braking, or cornering in dry
conditions, wet cornering or high speed hydroplaning resistance.
The different traction grades are:
Traction
Grade g-force (asphalt) g-force (concrete)
AA Above 0.54 Above 0.41
A Above 0.47 Above 0.35
B Above 0.38 Above 0.26
C Less than 0.38 Less than 0.26
TEMPERATURE: Indicates the extent to which heat is generated
or dissipated by a tire.
Temperature
Grade Speed (mph)
A Over 115
A Between 100 to 115
B Between 85 to 100
California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America December 2010
SIZE: The first segment (255) is the width of the tire in millimeters
(10.04 in). The second segment (40) is the height of the
tire (sidewall) as a percentage of its width. In other words, in this
case, 40% of 255 mm = 102 mm (4.02 in). The “Z” is the speed
rating and the “R” corresponds to the construction type (Radial).
The “94Y” has been covered above. Additional markings, such as
Type of Construction, Country of Origin and other are also to be
found on the sidewall.
ROTATION: Many of today’s high-speed tires have the rotation
marked as well. Either by indicating the direction of rotation or
by the word “OUTSIDE” which indicates that that part of the tire
should face to the outside.
Many of today’s tires are also asymmetrical and unidirectional,
meaning that the tread pattern is different side-to-side and
that they are meant to rotate in one direction only.
This means that they cannot be transferred from the left
side of the vehicle to the right side or viceversa. In our modern
Porsches it also means that they cannot be transferred front-toback
because the rears are generally wider than the fronts.
So, in order to have our tires last as long as possible, and
because they cannot be rotated, as in conventional vehicles, it is
extremely important to have the tires properly balanced, properly
inflated and the car properly aligned. But that will be matter for
another Tech Article.
You will note that we did not include INFLATION in this
article. Maximum tire inflation is generally indicated on the sidewall
as well, but it is a maximum number for structural integrity
purposes. The correct inflation pressures for each vehicle are indicated
by the car’s manufacturers on a sticker generally found on
the door or door jamb of the vehicle.
Bob
DeVries
Careening through a maze of hangars, airport
aprons, and roads around the San Luis Airport,
trying to keep up with Bob De Vries in his tangerine
1968 911L Porsche, we finally arrived at Hangar
No. 58. Inside was the
fuselage of a two-place
vintage airplane. It was
the archetype of an
airplane from the golden
era of flying: a tail dragger,
made of polished
aluminum, set firmly on
covered fixed wheels, and
with two open cockpits
for flyers with leather
head gear. Somehow
Bob’s classic 1968 911L
and the 1940 Ryan STM
training plane seemed
to belong together. The
story of how the Porsche
and the Ryan wound
up together in a hangar
Bob DeVries
in San Luis is a story of several decades and on several
continents.
Bob De Vries was born in South Gate, in south Los
Angeles, but spent his early days in Michigan. Returning
to southern California, he went to Long Beach
City College and Long Beach State University. After finishing
school, Bob had no doubts or hesitations about
what he wanted to do with his life: he had wanted to fly
airplanes from his earliest childhood and the best way
California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America December 2010
to learn was to join one of the flying military services.
The Air Force was interested, but put him on a wait list.
The US Navy on the other hand wanted him immediately.
So he joined the US Navy in 1961 and was sent to
naval aviation school in Pensacola, Florida. After initial
pilot training he later qualified as a carrier pilot and in
multi-engine aircraft. The Navy saw that Bob had other
skills as well, and sent him off to navigation school and
he graduated as a celestial navigator. No GPS in those
days. After his training days, Bob flew Super Connies,
Hercules C-130’s, and other types of aircraft all over the
Pacific and Asia.
Bob resigned his commission in the Navy in 1966
and signed on with Pan American World Airways.
Based in San Francisco, Bob flew 707’s and 747’s. And
since he knew his way around the Pacific and Asian
air routes—he knew how to find small dots of land in
large bodies of water--- he flew many of his old military
routes, now carrying paying passengers. After years of
flying, Bob was transferred to the Pan-Am’s Training
group. Bob spent eight years training crews for Turkish,
Japanese, and other Asian airlines. He and his wife
Dorothy spent a similar period stationed in Berlin. In
1991, Delta Airlines bought Pan-Am and Bob spent the
last eight years as a Delta employee, finally retiring in
1998.
While still in the Navy Bob married. After he
joined Pan-Am, Bob and wife, Dorothy, made
their home in the San Francisco area. There they raised a
18
family, flew airplanes, and drove sports cars in their
spare time. First came MG’s, Alfa-Romeos, and BMW’s.
Later Bob bought a new 1968 911L. This was in fact
a modified 911S
that had failed
California’s smog
laws. Porsche had
first delivered a
batch of 1968
911S’s to California,
but the “S”
engine ran afoul
(literally) of the
state’s pollution
laws. Porsche AG
recalled all the
1968 “S” engines,
modified them
at the factory
in Germany and
re-installed them in the new, engine-less 911 bodies.
Porsche re-badged the cars as 911L’s. Bob’s coupe is
pretty much original with 135000 miles. It still makes
the right noises and still has the right attitude on the
road. Bob joined the PCA in the 1960’s and was a long
time member of Loma Prieta Region before transferring
to the CCCR when he and Dorothy moved permanently
to San Luis Obispo.
What has Bob been doing since 1998? Aside from
becoming an active member of CCCR’s Board
of Directors and driving his 911L, he and his brother,
John, have been restoring the Ryan STM. This is a convoluted
story. In one of his trips to the Philippines for
Pan-Am, he chanced upon a decaying Ryan trainer lying
forlornly in a field outside of Manila. The decrepit Ryan
STM was built in San Diego in 1940 as part of a fleet of
40 planes ordered by the Dutch Air Force in Indonesia.
In 1941 the plane was captured by the Japanese, and
after the war, eventually made its way to Tasmania, Sydney,
Hong Kong, and finally Manila, where Bob rescued
the old crate from a certain date with the crusher.
He returned the hulk to the US, stored it and
waited until he retired and had a place to work on
it. This all came together when he bought a hangar in
California Central Coast Porsche Club Of America December 2010
the San Luis Obispo air facility. Today, Bob and John
have almost completed the major structural components
of the Ryan—the fuselage, the wings, tail pieces, wheels,
and the engine. The twin
cockpits and the engine need
some more work. Then it
will be time to test the plane
on the ground, and, finally
put the old girl back in the
air again after several decades
being grounded. When she is
flying she will sport her original
colors and insignias just
like the photo below—except
that the “29” will be changed
to “40,” the Ryan’s original
number when captured in
1941. Bob believes Number
40 will be one of the last
Bob and the close-to-restored Ryan STM
Ryan STM’s to fly when she
takes to the sky in early 2011, with Flying Officer (Ret.)
Robert De Vries at the controls. –miltworthy--
