Browns Summit, N.C. - The Carolinas PGA
Section dedicated its new headquarters on
Monday, April 23, 2012. The ceremony
brought together many North Carolina and
local government dignitaries, partners of the
CPGA, members of the CPGA, and members
of the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation Board of
Directors to commemorate the occasion.
Carolinas PGA Hosts Grand Opening
Attendees of the event included US Congressman
Howard Coble, Lt. Governor Walter
Dalton, President of The PGA of America,
Allen Wronowski, PGA, Carolinas PGA President,
Mike Casto, PGA, Mayor of Greensboro,
Robbie Perkins, Guilford County Board of
Commissioners Chairman, Skip Alston, and
President of the Bryan Foundation, Jim Melvin, just to name a few.
The Carolinas PGA Section was founded at Greensboro Country Club
in May 1923 and officially recognized as a Section of The PGA of America
in 1940. The CPGA had its headquarters in Greensboro and Durham
until 1976 when the decision was made to move the Section Headquarters
to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. When the Section’s Myrtle Beach
property was sold to Loris Healthcare, the CPGA Board of Directors set
out in earnest to find the best location for the Carolinas PGA Section to
call home into the future.
After much consideration and research of all areas in the Carolinas,
Greensboro came out on top as the location that would be home to the
new Carolinas PGA Section headquarters. The 3.1 acre parcel of land at
the entrance to Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center, that the CPGA
Headquarters now calls home, provided what the Section was looking
for, a true Home Site.
The ceremony began with CPGA Vice President Chad Newton, PGA,
and CPGA Secretary John Marino, PGA, unveiling a “Coming Home”
plaque recognizing the Section’s return to where it first was formed.
The theme of coming home was echoed in all the speeches made by
attendees that both
welcomed the Section
to Greensboro
and also expressed
thanks to all those
that made the
move possible.
Dear Carolinas PGA Members,
There’s no place like home.
For the Carolinas PGA, Greensboro, NC and Bryan Park is now our home. Throughout our dedication
ceremony, the message was clear; the Carolinas PGA was coming home to a community
that is excited to have us. Allen Wronowski, PGA President, took time out of his busy schedule
to attend our dedication ceremony. A number of local, county and state officials, including a US
congressman and the Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina were also able to attend. Every
member of the Carolinas PGA should be proud of our new headquarters location and comfortable
in knowing we are in a community that is proud we are in Greensboro.
In 2002, the Section officers and Board envisioned our headquarters being located at a golf facility
that would become a destination for our professionals, and one they would be proud to bring
a group of their members along for an enjoyable golf experience. Over the years, the Section
has considered several opportunities and locations. Special thanks to Past CPGA President Rick
Murphy for his vision and tireless efforts in developing our new home site location. Rick and Marc Isasacson, CPGA NC Legal
Counsel, worked closely with Greensboro city officials and Mr. Jim Melvin, President of the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation, to
develop a concept and vision that not only met, but exceeded the expectations of the Carolinas PGA.
In early April, your officers and executive director traveled to Louisville, KY to attend the annual District 10 meeting. Personally,
I have always enjoyed attending the D-10 meetings because there is a truly unique relationship we share with the officers of
the Middle Atlantic and Kentucky Sections. Mike Ahrnsbrak, District 10 Director, lead our discussions of GOLF 2.0 and other
national issues. On the final day of our meetings, we interviewed the seven candidates for the office of Secretary of the PGA of
America. The time we spent with the candidates should help my fellow officers and I make a more informed decision in November
when we cast our votes.
The schedule for the ten Area Meetings has been finalized. My fellow officers and I want to encourage each of you to attend
your Area Meeting and tee it up in the Area Challenge!
The 2012 PGA Championship is only three months away! For those of you that have registered to volunteer your time to help,
thank you. With over 300 shifts to fill, we need more CPGA professionals to sign up. Take a look at your schedule and see
when you can help. Then contact the Section office by phone or you can sign up on line.
Finally, on behalf of the Command of Fort Jackson and the staff of Fort Jackson Golf Club, I want to extend a personal invitation
to each of you to participate in the SC Open being held at FJGC in early June 5th-7th. Jeff Connell, FJGC Superintendent and
Past President of the CGCSA, and his staff are working hard to prepare our Wildcat Course for the tournament. Hope you can
make it!
Sincerely,
Dear Carolinas PGA Members,
The Official Golf Car
of The PGA of America
Letter from the
Executive Director
As was stated earlier by President Casto, Monday, April 23rd marks a new day in the history of the
Carolinas PGA Section. With the dedication of our new home site in Greensboro, the Carolinas
Section now has a wonderful new office from which to conduct the daily activities of the Section.
I hope if you find yourself in Greensboro, you will not hesitate to stop in and see “your” section
headquarters.
Later this month, we will begin our Annual Area Meetings and Area Challenge Golf events. This
is your chance to be involved with the business of your association. Five Areas will be voting on a
new Director, and we need your voice to be heard. It is also the chance to earn MSR for this cycle
and get a jump on your requirements. Each meeting will provide Meeting and Education MSR.
The meetings will be presented in partnership with long standing section sponsor Cleveland Golf /
Srixon and new partner Polo Ralph Lauren. I hope you will make these a big success and plan to attend. The full schedule can
be found on page 7 in this issue.
With summer fast approaching, two events that need our support are just around the corner. We have agreed to secure volunteer
professionals for both the 2012 PGA Championship being held at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort and the
PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship. For the PGA Championship we need to fill more than 300 shifts, and as of this writing
we are only about one third of the way to our goal. This is your chance to help at one of golf ’s four majors. You can volunteer
by going to the Carolinas PGA website, or by calling the Section office to let us know your intentions.
We have similar needs the following week for the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship held in Greensboro. NC. Our golf professionals
have the opportunity to walk with groups in the Pro-Am tournaments held on Monday and Wednesday. You can also
sign-up to volunteer for this event by going to carolinas.pga.com or calling the Section office.
Now is a good time to start thinking about what you can do for the Folds of Honor Foundation and Patriot Golf Day. In 2012
Carolinas PGA Golf Professionals will help send our totals over the one million dollar mark. I know that each of you will want
to remain committed to this cause and it is never to early to prepare for Labor Day Weekend.
Sincerely,
Ron Schmid, PGA
Executive Director
MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR TIME AND PERSONNEL
One of the hallmarks of PGA Professionals has always been the variety of “hats” we wear and roles we fill at our facilities. However, some PGA
Professionals tell me they find it challenging to be productive and stay on top of their workload with all the demands on their time and services.
This has become more the case in recent years as many facilities have been forced to downsize their staffing, while asking their PGA Professional
to take on additional job priorities and management responsibilities.
In the heart of the busy season, with a limited staff and a lengthy “to do” list, it’s natural to feel that there aren’t enough hours in the day to get it all
done. Everything can seem like an urgent and high priority task that only you can handle, which can lead to increased stress and the possibility of
burnout.
Making the best use of your time and personnel is even more critical now, with the introduction of the Golf 2.0 initiative and the focus on player
development. If you are the top ranking PGA Professional at your facility, it’s important that you allocate time to take the lead in implementing
Golf 2.0 initiatives, including communicating strategies with your employer, developing and promoting ideas from the Golf 2.0 Playbooks, and
utilizing your staff to achieve measurable results.
So what can you do to avoid feeling overwhelmed? A good first step is to learn and practice good time management skills. Research shows that
most of us spend the majority of our time working on unimportant or low priority tasks, instead of utilizing that same time on higher priority or
more valuable projects. One of the fundamental time management principles is prioritizing items into the following matrix: (1) high importance/
high urgency, (2) high importance/low urgency, (3) low importance/high urgency, (4) low importance/low urgency. Using this matrix can help you
decide which items to tackle today and which can be set aside for later or be delegated to someone else. If you don’t use some type of system to
prioritize your work, everything will seem like an urgent high priority item and your level of stress will increase.
Another good time management skill is to eliminate time wasters and distractions. Try keeping a diary of everything you do for three days to
determine how you are spending your time. You will likely be surprised at how much time you are devoting to non-productive tasks and dealing
with interruptions, at the expense of the things that are more important. To help eliminate this, plan your day and schedule specific times for various
functions. Without a plan, you may find yourself working in a disjointed way and drifting from one thing to another all day. Designate time
for administrative work, returning phone calls and emails, teaching and time on the practice range, interacting with customers in the golf shop or
on the first tee, etc. In your daily scheduling, don’t forget about your own needs – playing and practicing, family time, meals, etc.
If you feel that you are not using your work time efficiently and your days are filled with constant chaos, consider taking a time management class
at a local college and incorporate the ideas and techniques into your daily routine. There are also a number of time management courses as part of
the PGA Certified Professional Program 2.0 library, available on PGALinks.com.
Going hand in hand with managing your time is delegating and utilizing your staff, which is a critical skill for successful managers in any business.
Effective delegation can free you to focus on the areas of your job where your expertise and personal supervision are needed the most. It can also
motivate your staff, increase their productivity, enhance their skills, and help them feel more a part of the team. Naturally, you need to be careful
not to delegate important responsibilities that your employer expects you to handle yourself. To help determine which items you should delegate,
ask yourself the following questions:
• Is it something that your employer expects you to handle yourself and requires your own personal attention? These responsibilities should
rarely be delegated.
• Is it something that you normally take care of but could also be handled by a staff member with some guidance or brief training? This type of
work can often be delegated.
• Is it something that is not a good use of your time and could easily be handled by a staff member? These tasks should almost always be delegated.
It’s inevitable that some of the items you delegate will be routine administrative work and other mundane tasks. Even though these are necessary
to most golf operations, you don’t want your employees to feel that you are just dumping more busywork on them. Make sure to assign meaningful
projects and areas of responsibility as well, so you can give your staff members the opportunity to be creative and use their own initiative.
Keep in mind that delegation will often fail if you assign a project but don’t provide clear directions, and then find that you are disappointed when
the project is not completed to your expectations. As a result, the next time you may feel compelled to do the work yourself, rather than delegate
it and risk another “failure.” This will lead to increasing frustration for you, and a feeling on the part of your employees that you don’t think they
can do the job.
To create a positive cycle of delegation, make sure your employees have a clear understanding of the desired result, a time or date for completion,
and any guidance that might be needed. When discussing how the task can be achieved, listen to the employee – they may have a different (and
sometimes better) idea on how it can be handled. For ongoing programs or activities, monitor their progress with routine “checkups” so you can
provide feedback to the employee.
After a successful project is completed, praise the employee for a great job and let others at your facility know how well the employee handled the
assignment. This can be a wonderful motivator for any staff member, and they will be eager to move on the next assignment and continue to be
an asset to you and your operation.
If you are a PGA Professional who feels you were hired to do all the work yourself, try making better use of your time and your staff. You will
reduce your stress and enhance your productivity, allowing you to better serve your customers, meet the needs of your employer, and promote the
success of your facility.
Volunteer Opportunities
As most of you know, one of golf ’s four
major championships is once again coming
to the Carolinas. The venerable Ocean
Course at Kiawah Island will host the 2012
PGA Championship in August. In order to
conduct the most professional event as possible,
the PGA of America and Carolinas
PGA Section need your help.
The CPGA is searching for PGA Professionals
to volunteer their time during
the championship week from Sunday to
Sunday, August 5-12 and serve in a few different capacities which will
involve interacting with competitors and patrons. Those who served
at the 2007 Senior PGA Championship at Kiawah will receive priority
registration, as will this year’s volunteers for the 2017 PGA Championship
at Quail Hollow GC.
Volunteer opportunities:
- Golf instruction (air conditioned)
- Practice facilities (putting/chipping/range)
- Practice round starting tee pairings boards
If you are interested in volunteering you can register here or complete
the printable registration form and fax it to the Section office at (336)
398-2743
The Section will be securing CPGA Professionals to volunteer for the
two Wyndham Championship Pro-Am tournaments on Monday &
Wednesday, August 13 & 15. Individuals will walk and interact with
teams of amateurs and a PGA Tour member on the course.
This is the second year that we have supported the championship in
such a fashion. Those that were involved in 2011 thoroughly enjoyed
themselves. They shared a few stories, gave a few golf tips, and made
a few new friends. It sounds like a typical day for a PGA Professional,
doesn’t it? However, there was one main difference...it all took place
inside the ropes at a PGA Tour event right next to a renowned PGA
Tour member.
Over the past few years Get Golf Ready has proven to be a
highly successful program to not only introduce new golfers
to the sport, but also as an effective way to create lifetime
golfers.
Get Golf Ready is a program developed to provide new
golfers with the skills and confidence to get out onto the
golf course. This program is unique compared to other approaches
of instructing new players because it tackles one of
the largest obstacles a new player faces, making the transition
from the driving range to the course.
The basic criteria to qualify as a Get Golf Ready program
includes:
• Offer a series of group lessons
(recommend five sessions)
18th Tar Heel Cup Matches
The Amateurs ended an eleven-year victory drought to capture the 18th
Tar Heel Cup at the Dormie Club in West End, NC. They had not captured
the cup since 2000.
Leading after the Four-Ball matches on Monday by 2 points they hung on
for a one point win. After nine holes it looked like it was going to be another
win for the Professionals as the amateurs were behind in 6 of the 8
matches. Ryan Bell defeated John Thompson in the first match to pull the
amateurs ahead 4 to 1. The Professionals then rallied to win four straight
and took the lead 5 to 4. Paul Simson then came from 2 down after nine
to defeat Oliver Peacock and even the score at 5 points each. Scott Harvey,
in the last match of the day, closed out Charles Frost on the par three
16th to pull the amateurs ahead 6 to 5. All that was left to capture the cup
was for Uly Grisette to halve his match with Gus Ulrich. Uly was 2 down
after twelve but won the next three holes to go up by one. They halved
the par three 16th, and then after Ulrich made par on the par 5 17th, Uly
calmly rolled his birdie putt from just off the back of the green to within
a foot of the hole. The putt was conceded by Gus and the Tar Heel Cup
was secured. Ulrich birdied the last hole from a greenside bunker to tie
Grisette and make the final score a one-point victory for the amateurs.
The CPGA thanks the Professionals who qualified for the team and
competed and congratulates the amateurs on their victory. The win was
especially sweet for CGA Team Captain Ray Novicky who will be retiring
from his position with the CGA at the end of 2012.
The Tar Heel Cup is an annual competition between eight Carolinas
PGA Section Members from North Carolina, and eight North Carolina
Amateurs representing the Carolinas Golf Association. The first day
consists of four Four-Ball Matches each worth one point. Day two is
eight singles matches also valued at one point each. Matches tied at the
end of 18 holes are awarded ½ point each. It takes 6½ points to win the
cup outright.
