Armed with medical skills, National Guard<br />

and Reserve forces head for border<br />

Elements of National Guard and<br />

Reserve forces are heading for the Rio<br />

Grande Valley once again to provide free<br />

medical care to local residents.<br />

The reserve component members are<br />

part of Operation Lone Star 2004, which<br />

also involves a number of state agencies<br />

and private organizations, bringing trained<br />

personnel to a medically under-served<br />

area of Texas.<br />

Sixty-three members of the Texas<br />

National Guard will join 52 members of<br />

the U.S. Navy Reserve and nine members<br />

of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve<br />

to constitute the military-uniformed contingent.<br />

Thirty-seven Texas guardsmen<br />

and 35 Navy Reservists will provide<br />

medical and dental services while the<br />

other military members will provide<br />

administrative and logistical support.<br />

The meaningful and realistic training<br />

they receive during Operation Lone Star<br />

will help prepare them to operate in both<br />

wartime situations and natural disasters.<br />

In addition, 15 members of the Texas<br />

State Guard Medical Rangers are participating.<br />

Civilian agencies and organizations<br />

involved in Operation Lone Star 2004<br />

include the Office of the Secretary of<br />

State, Texas Department of Health,<br />

Cameron County Health Department,<br />

County of Cameron, County of Hidalgo,<br />

Health and Human Service Commission,<br />

Office of the Secretary of State, Secretaria<br />

de Relaciones Exteriores-Mexican<br />

Consulate, Migrant Health Promotion,<br />

Texas A&M University Colonias<br />

Program, Texas State Technical College<br />

Dental Assisting Program, Rio Grande<br />

Valley Dental Hygienists’ Society,<br />

Dentists Who Care, Cameron Works<br />

Texas Workforce Centers, Texas<br />

Department of Human Services, Wesley<br />

Nurses of the Rio Grande Valley, San<br />

Antonio College of Dental and Medical<br />

Assistants, Career Centers of Texas-<br />

Brownsville, UT Health Science Center<br />

of <strong>Houston</strong> School of Public Health/Starr<br />

County Health Studies Human Genetics<br />

Center, and TAMU-SRPH-STC-HERO<br />

Mobile Unit.<br />

Operation Lone Star 2004 offers general<br />

medical care, adult dental care,<br />

sports physicals, immunizations, diabetic<br />

screening, high blood pressure3screening<br />

and pharmacy service – all without<br />

charge. Scheduled service dates and<br />

hours of operation are July 26-31 and<br />

Aug. 2-4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Aug.<br />

5 from 8 a.m. to noon. The three treatment<br />

sites are:<br />

During his remarks,<br />

Martinez-Lopez welcomed<br />

and congratulated Nanton as<br />

the new commander of<br />

MITC. He is the 12th commander<br />

to take office at the<br />

center.<br />

Martinez-Lopez also<br />

recognized Lopez for his<br />

successful tenure at the<br />

center. In the past three<br />

years, MITC has moved<br />

back on post, changed its<br />

name, and realized the<br />

vision of MEDCOM REG<br />

AR 25-1.<br />
