ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT (ADP) UPDATE
The day has finally arrived when we are in the new facility.
Stepping into the Sports Academy and the Physical Preparation
area, it still feels like it is not ours – but it is.
The athletes all had to complete an induction program on how to
use the equipment in a safe and correct manner. Then there was
a written test to complete to receive a passport so that they could
utilize the facility.
The equipment in the Physical Preparation area is as good as any
Institute of Sport, AFL club or training facility in Australia. At no
stage can we take this facility for granted, the equipment will not
train for you so work hard and it may result in achievements that
you thought could not be achieved.
Louise Falzon our Sports Nutritionist has been busy with
individual consultations.
Term 3 SEPTEMBER 2010
Tarah Kavanagh our Sports Psychologist has presented a Stress
Management session to the Year 11 and 12 athletes. The Years
7 - 10 athletes have covered the elements required to become an
elite athlete. All year levels have also completed a Drugs in Sport
component in their ADP classes.
Injury clinic is operating from
7:15am – 8:30am Monday to Friday.
All athletes should remember to attend injury clinic if they have
an injury and cannot complete the training program.
Remember when you walk through the doors of the Physical
Preparation area, if you are not prepared to work hard and give it
everything you have turn around and get changed.
ELIZA KARLEY HYNES
World Beach Volleyball Bronze Medal
Eliza Hynes, a 2009 Maribyrnong Sports Academy student,
recently captured a Bronze Medal at the World Youth Beach
Volleyball Championships in Portugal with her partner Taliqua
Clancy. Eliza features on the Sports Academy Honour Wall for
having previously represented Australia in Netball and Indoor
Volleyball and this latest achievement will elevate her to Silver
status on the wall.
After surviving three epic three setters in the pool play Hynes and
Clancy remained undefeated until the semi-final stage where
they were just pipped by the eventual gold medallists, Summer
Ross and Jane Croson of the USA. But the semi-final loss proved
only a minor hiccup as the girls went on to totally dominate their
Brazilian opponents in the bronze medal match, 2-0 (21-13, 21-
11). The Brazilians were the competitions number one seeds.
Amazingly the pair had only played one tournament together
previously and that was almost two years ago. But with some
intense training and plenty of support from coaching staff Mick
Nelson and Dan Illot (and of course plenty of vocal support from
the other Aussie teams in the grandstands) they transformed
themselves into a team to be reckoned with.
TEAMWORK,
LEADERSHIP,
COOPERATION (TLC Mentoring)
The Sports Academy has employed Olympians Chris Anstey
(Basketball) and Natalie Titcume (Softball) to work with the
Athlete Development Program (ADP) athletes in Years 7 to 10.
The Program will be held in the first six weeks of Term 4 and cover
a range of topics including a team challenge and workshops on
culture, resilience, being your best, overcoming adversity, goal
setting, teamwork and preparing for competition.
A Parent Information Evening to explain the program and provide
the opportunity for parents to ask questions will be held on
Wednesday October 6th
So what now for our newest “bronze” Aussies? Their next
challenge is only a few weeks away - the Junior World
Championships in Turkey starting on 15th September. The
Maribyrnong Sports Academy wish Eliza and her partner the best
of luck in this U/21 Junior World Championships. Eliza has agreed
to come back to the College in the near future to talk to other
TECHNICAL TRAINING UPDATE
MARIBYRNONG BOYS WIN THE WESTERN JETS CUP 2010
The best boys involved in the AFL technical program in Years 7
and 8 were chosen to play in the Western Jets cup for Western
Metropolitan schools both private and public. In order to qualify
for the Jets Cup the boys played preliminary games against
Bayside and Williamstown High School. As pool winners the boys
played against Caroline Springs in the finals.
On Tuesday 31st August we travelled out to the Western Jets
headquarters at Crofts Reserve Nth Altona for the finals game that
started at 12.30pm.
On paper the teams were closely matched in ability and we
needed to be on our game ready for a fast start. Pleasingly we
were outscoring Caroline Springs into the wind in the 1st quarter
and never looked back. Overall a great team effort and a great
opportunity for our boys who regularly train together to put some
of what we are trying to teach them individually into a game
situation.
From a coaching point of view it was really satisfying to see so
many boys put it together and mature as players. We were well
led by our Captain for this competition “PJ” Manivong and best
players included Taylor Gorry, Dillon Viojo-Rainbow, Peter Wright,
“LJ” Landt, Jesse Worthing and James Leach.
The Umpires BOG was Dillon and the most improved/best team
Thanks a lot to the many parents who came along to support
both matches especially Elaine Moss (1st aid and oranges), Terri
Landt and Rene Ollington (snakes and oranges) that brought
their expertise and treats to help out our boys!
Also to our year 9 and 10 boys Dylan Sloman, Joshua Huckstepp,
Ricky Schraven and James Edwards for their help with umpiring
and running for both games.
Also Bjorny for enduring the cold wind “up top” to do our video
analysis which we hope to use as a coaching tool for term 4 with
Another term has come to an end and it’s time to reflect on the
progress of our basketball program. Our Junior Girls and Boys
teams competed in the Victorian Championships, with the boys
succumbing to much taller timber which made it hard to get the
wins needed but to their credit played very well and made it to
the semi final.
The girls however went one step further and made the Regional
Grand Final but went down in a very close game by 2 points. This
qualified them for the State Final and again the girls held their
own with 2 players short and made the semi final. In the end the
girls did not have enough bench strength to get over the hump.
Our Intermediate Boys and Girls also played in the Victorian
Championships. Our Girls were shocked early by a good Rowville
Team that was full of state players. The girls responded from that
point on and played every game close. Our boys played some
Stacey capped off a massive first year for Altona Gators, by winning the
Victorian Basketball League Big V Women’s Division: “Most Valuable Player
Award for the Grand Final Series” in Warrnambool last weekend.
Stacey clearly had an outstanding Grand Final series. In Game 1 Altona
defeated Warrnambool 70 – 62 and in this match Stacey shot 35 points.
Game two Warrnambool defeated Altona 71 – 58, where Stacey managed 8
points. The deciding match was a closer encounter, with Altona defeating
Warrnambool 63 – 58; Stacey did some damage on the scoreboard shooting
18 points for the match.
She was presented with her MVP Award by League Representatives at the
conclusion of the match.
Stacey was recruited from the Werribee Devils where she played from 2007
– 2009. In that time she claimed the most valuable player status in 2009
Division 1 Grand Final Series win over Sunbury.
In June this year, Stacey was selected in the Big V all star team and played
against Japan at Broadmeadows. Stacey is hopeful of playing in America
at some stage and she enjoyed the opportunity to playing against an
international team.
We wish Stacey all the best with her Year 12 studies, and continued success
with her basketball career.
very stiff competition as well and kept every game close. The boys
did make the semi final but lost to a tough Box Hill team.
The senior program starts its strong national campaign with
a showing in the McDonalds Cup. The games will be held at
Dandenong Basketball Stadium on September 8, 2010. This
tournament will feature some of the best schools in the state. Our
girls made the Final Four last year and look to go one better this
year. Our Boys did not get as far as the girls last year but this year
they are playing very well and have earned an opportunity.
Our athletes have worked very hard this year and it is starting to
pay off! Well done to all of the players that put in the effort session
What an exciting term it has been for the Badminton Program
at Maribyrnong College (MC). We had three interschool teams
represent MC at the State Finals held at MSAC. These were the
Senior Girls, Intermediate Boys (semi finalists) and Year 8 Boys
(still to compete).
Whilst we celebrate the success of our Interschool sporting
teams, our high performance athletes have been working
hard to achieve some fantastic results. Gronya Somerville of
Year 9 qualified through to the main draw at the 2010 Yonex
Australian Open Grand Prix held at MSAC in July. Gronya was
defeated in the Round of 32 by Minatsu Mitani of Japan 21-
10, 21-6. The past weekend saw Gronya achieve the Runner
up position in the Ladies Singles at the Monash Open – a
fantastic result considering she is only 15. Earlier this year
Gronya was Runner Up in the Australasian U17 Doubles
Championships and she also holds the State U19 Ladies
Term 3 has been an exciting term in the cricket program.
Not only are the players getting their game together ready
to embark on another cricket season, they had the pleasure
of the presence of one of Australia’s greatest and most loved
fast bowlers, Merv Hughes. The former test player and current
Australian National selector put the squad through their paces
for two enjoyable and educational sessions. He spoke to players
of the importance of concentration in all levels of sport and to
make “every ball count”. It was that sentiment he maintained
throughout his career (both with bat and ball) and he took
Merv assisting Guy Walker on the technical
aspect of his bowling
Victorian U19 Badminton team and represented the state at
the National Championships held in Tasmania in July.
This term has seen the Badminton program grow with the
inclusion of a Development Squad of 12 being coached by
past National Squad players (and teachers at MC) Ben Walklate
and Erin Carroll. Erin was a member of the 2008 Beijing
Olympic Badminton Team.
He gave individual advice to players both on a technical level
Our Year 7 & 8 Netball team
FOOTSCRAY Swimming Club scored 220 points to finish 19th from
61 clubs at the Victorian Age Short Course Championships last
week.
Lushavel Stickland, a Year 7 student in the Sports Academy
scored all 220 points for the club.
It was a phenomenal effort from the 12-year-old, who competed
against swimmers from more renowned clubs and was arguably
the swimmer of the meet – in all age categories.
Stickland won 10 gold medals and broke Victorian records in the
200m freestyle, 400m freestyle and 100m individual medley (IM).
She was one of several top performers from the western suburbs.
Maribyrnong Swimming Club finished 12th overall, with Natalie
Roberts flying the flag for the club and the Sports Academy .
Roberts won the 200m breast-stroke in the 15 year-old girls’
division, and claimed silver in the 100m breast-stroke.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT & SPORTING EXCELLENCE
It has been another exciting term for the Netball program. The
group is extremely passionate and committed. They work very
hard through the sessions and the results are starting to show as
their skill level continues to develop.
We entered a Year 7 and 8 team into The Victorian School
Championships in August. We had some fantastic results with
the girls finishing third overall. Eventually being knocked out of
the Championships by the winning team Sacred Heart Geelong.
The girls looked great in their new uniforms and played
and acted in a very professional manner. We would like to
acknowledge the support from the families who were there for
the girls through all the games
There has been the trials for zone academy, Bonnie and Siobhan
performed very well and are waiting for the results to see if they
make the squad. As they are bottom age the competition will be
very tough.
Overall we are happy with the progress of the girls and look
forward to continued success.
The football program continues to aspire to be recognised
as one of the finest programs for talented youth. From June
27-30th, 35 Maribyrnong Sport Academy athlete’s and staff
visited the Australian Institute of Sport to look at all elements
of Australia’s most elite environment. Students were fortunate
enough to live, eat and train in the AIS athlete’s residential
quarters and get specialised coaching from AIS coaching staff
and athlete’s. Gary Van Egmond held several sessions and
as a bonus, his daughter Emily Van Egmond (Midfielder for
Australia) helped take sessions for our athletes also.
The AIS events staff developed a holistic program where
our athletes trained, recovered and learnt how to assess
performance, while having open access to world-class facilities.
From student feedback, the AIS athlete presentation from
current goalkeeper Aaron Lennox proved a real highlight. The
program looks forward to future trips to the AIS, as well as
domestic and international trips.
Closer to home, Simon Zappia, Luke Dyt, Armia Gundi,
Nemanja Vucic, Anthony Ragusa, Christian Georgopoulos,
Ardian Vuniqi and Dylan Murnane competed at the State Final
for Futsal. The boys played very well at the indoor format and
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT & SPORTING EXCELLENCE
were defeated by a solitary goal to Rowville in what was a
great effort.
The Year 9/10 intermediate girls lost to Melbourne Girls
Secondary College in the State Final. It was a very respectable
result to be named as second in Victoria, especially as only
three Maribyrnong Sport Academy athletes were available for
the final. Congratulations to Stephanie Normington-Dickens,
Aleisha Newman, Simona Mijalevska, Zoe Stamatopoulos,
Chelsea Paterson and Natasha Nardella who participated
throughout the championships.
Dylan Murnane has been selected in the Under 15 Victoria
With a wet and wild winter it’s been an interrupted term 3 for the
