Lochlan McDonald has been selected in the School Sport Victoria Under-15 state football side.

LOCHLAN McDonald was on his way to school when a friend rang him to tell him the good news.
McDonald had been selected in the School Sport Victoria Under-15 football team, which will
compete against some of the best young footballers in the country at the National Championships in
Adelaide later this year.
“It was probably the best feeling I’ve ever had with my footy and I was really proud of myself. I
was really stoked,” McDonald said.
“Going into it I just wanted to put in my best effort. It didn’t really bother me whether I made it or
not. It was more just about seeing how I was going to go against better competition.”
The championships have a rich history of blooding some of the countries now household names
including the likes of Chris Judd, Luke Ball and Jobe Watson.

The side will continue to train together and play a
number of practice games before the tournament
starts. While McDonald is “just hoping to get a
kick,” he said the result for the team was more
important than individual accolades.
“I’ll make sure I’ve got a good work rate and
most importantly try and win. It’s not really about
my performance it’s more about the side doing
well,” he said.
McDonald will see a few familiar faces in the side
with three of his fellow classmates at Maribyrnong
College also selected.

The boys all train together in the school’s specialised football program and it is the second year in
the row the school has produced multiple representatives.
“One of my team mates from Maribyrnong, I’ve played with in interleague teams and for the
Western Jets. We really know how we are going to play together and it gives us a bit of an
advantage,” he said.
“Compared to where I was when I first went to the school with my footy to where I am now, I’ve
improved a hell of a lot.
“I think when I first went there people were doubting how good my football ability really was. In the
last year it has really increased a lot through making this team and making the Jets’ first team.”
McDonald, who plays a range of positions across the forward line, backline and midfield said one of
his long-term goals was to make the Western Jets’ Under-18’s side to give himself the best chance
of being drafted.
“I want to play 18’s Jets even when I’m 17 so I can hopefully get a couple of bottom aged games
and then have a big year when I’m 18. Then get an invite to the AFL draft camp.
“With the footy program at school they help you with your pathways so that’s something I’ve
already set out and hopefully I’m on my way to doing that.”
