A Message from the President I want to invite you to join us at the 108th Annual Conference of the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS), which will be held September 25–28, 2011, at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii’s “Big Island.” It can’t get much better than this! The conference will be during the Hawaiian “off -season,” when the weather is great, and air fares and costs are at their lowest. In today’s dollars, air-fares are half of what it cost in 1992, when ASHS last met in Hawaii. The Hilton Waikoloa Village is a premier property and venue situated on a 62-acre oceanfront destination on the Kohala Coast. You can even cruise to the conference events on mahogany boats, rail tram, or walk the property. Membership is always concerned about cost—and we hear you! Well, ASHS has locked the conference rates at $150 per night for the last week of September 2011— that is 50% less than the regular rate. The property has swimming pools, beautiful beaches, and a lagoon for snorkeling with tropical fi sh and sea turtles. There is also complimentary shuttle service to other gorgeous beaches and $1.00 shopping trolleys to eateries off property. It has all the makings for a great family vacation! There will be a lot of unique tropical horticulture to see and some superb tours are being set up. Attending the ASHS Annual Conference provides an outstanding opportunity to share science and education, network with colleagues, and to think about the future of horticultural science. ASHS is composed of public and private sector professionals who are engaged in teaching, research, extension, and industry, which makes horticultural science so rich. By attending this conference, we reinforce the importance of the science of horticulture to the future. The ASHS Annual Conference is a great venue for undergraduate and graduate students to network, compete. and exchange ideas. We are very fortunate to have a superb ASHS Headquarters staff and a multitude of ASHS volunteers working hard to make this conference one of the best ever. ASHS–2011 is a unique forum designed for horticulture professionals working in all disciplines Here is a preview of what’s being planned for this year’s event-packed conference (subject to change) Colloquia—in-depth presentations on the following topics: Advances In Understanding Plant Metabolism Related to Crop Quality and Composition Breeding and Management of Temperate Fruit Crops for Nontemperate Climates Emerging Techniques to Evaluate and Mitigate Crop Environmental Stress in a Changing Climate Research Highlights and Commercial Application of Medicinal Plants Workshops—less structured with narrower focus than colloquia. Poster & Oral Presentations—we anticipate over 400 presentations on the latest topics in horticultural research and education. William A. “Tex” Frazier Lecture B.Y. Morrison Lecture Student Events & Competitions—for graduate and undergraduate attendees, starting with a reception on Sunday. ASHS Presidential Address & Annual Business Meeting Working Group & Committee Meetings Luau—a fun, “must do,” event when in Hawaii. The beautiful Anaehoomalu Bay is the background for this original Hawaiian luau. Per adult = $85; children (ages 6–12) = $40; under 5 = free Extension Division Breakfast—a “positive energy” breakfast where you’ll hear about some creative extension programs that are thriving at a time when most programs are struggling to survive. Industry Division Event—TBA. International Division Breakfast Welcome Reception—an informal gathering to say “aloha” to friends and colleagues. Pi Alpha Xi Luncheon & Annual Meeting—winners of the digital photography contest will be announced.
