AUG. 17, 2 B years 2012 5 Small Talk JEAN GILLETTE Something to scream about It is absolute karma, no doubt. We have a new child living behind us and he’s a screamer. I know all kids are noisy. It’s what kids do and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The fact that youngsters make me laugh louder and longer than anything else in this world makes me pretty tolerant, but this child is just loud. He screams when he’s happy. He screams when he’s mad. He screams when he talks and when he’s annoyed. He screams when he wants something. He probably would scream if he was ever in real pain, as well, but we will never know, since all of his screams sound the same. Which is why I have a problem with children for whom screaming is the default button. My mommy-alert bells and whistles still go off when I hear a child scream. Can’t help it. I am hoping by summer’s end to have found an antidote to my visceral reaction every time our new little neighbor cuts loose. Or I could continue banging my head against the wall. My children might have been shouters and loud laughers, but they were not screamers. I recall giving them my lecture about how they needed to save the scream for when they truly needed it. I probably told them the “Boy Who Cried Wolf” story. They were to save that noise for an attempted abduction or if they were truly injured. Otherwise, use your words. We were big on words. I must also admit that most of the noise that came from our house back then came from me…hence the aforementioned karma. Our neighbors once told me they thought my son’s name was “Marshall-don’t!” I’m TURN TO SMALL TALK ON B23 Celebrating in the Community SECTION Three generations drive local VW dealership By Jared Whitlock ENCINITAS — A lot has changed since Herman Cook Volkswagen opened in 1967. With the exception of two other car dealers in the area, the landscape surrounding the Volkswagen dealership was barren as far as the eye could see. Encinitas Boulevard was only two lanes. Traffic was rare on the newly completed Interstate 5 freeway. But in Dennis Cook’s view, much remains the same. As before, German engineering and Volkswagens are all the rage. And the Encinitas Volkswagen dealership, celebrating its 45th anniversary, is still family-owned and operated. “I’ve been very fortunate my dad chose to open in Encinitas,” said Dennis, owner of Herman Cook Volkswagen. “We’ve enjoyed growing with the community all these years.” In the mid-1950s, Herman Cook began working as a salesperson at a Volkswagen dealership. He climbed the ranks, eventually overseeing operations at two dealerships in Imperial Valley and Los Angeles County. He was then awarded the chance to open a new franchise dealership, with several options of where it could be built. After much research, Herman decided Encinitas would be the best spot. “My dad knew Encinitas would thrive,” Dennis said. “Everyone who visited Encinitas couldn’t help but fall in love with it.” Even though his formal education ended after fourth grade, Herman was “very smart” and “had the ability to outwork anyone,” said Dennis, who attributes his work ethic to his father’s lessons. “I grew up in the business,” Dennis said. “My dad’s deal was, you’re going Son Connor (left) and father Dennis Cook are celebrating the 45th anniversary of their family-owned and operated Encinitas Volkswagen dealership. Photo by Jared Whitlock Taxpayer group will endorse candidates this election By Jared Whitlock ENCINITAS — It’s a small change, but it could impact the November election. In the last election, the ETA (Encinitas Taxpayers Association) issued a voter scorecard grading City Council candidates on issues like pensions, secrecy and debt policy. Based on these ratings, candidates were given a letter grade. At a meeting last week, the ETA voted to continue giving candidates grades for the upcoming November election, but with one difference: the scorecard will also contain endorsements at the bot- tom. President Bob Bonde stated, with some at the meeting agreeing, that the ETA should go a step further than previous elections and specifically endorse candidates. “I think the public is really looking for leadership,” Bonde said. Others at the meeting said endorsements went too far, arguing a scorecard alone is neutral and more objective. As a compromise, ETA members voted to include endorsements, but only as a reflection of the grades on the scorecard. The ETA will soon put together this election’s scorecard. To determine grades, the organization interviews candidates and looks at policy positions from their websites. The candidates are given grades “A” to “F.” Of the four candidates in the 2010 election, Deputy Mayor Kristin Gaspar received an “F” grade, while Councilwoman Teresa Barth received an overall grade of “A-.” Bonde believes the ETA’s endorsements will bolster campaigns. An endorsement is “more tangible, more obvious” than a letter grade, he said. “The candidates can say they were endorsed by By Tony Cagala ENCINITAS — The final touches were being applied to the modest white building Tuesday after 18 months of planning and construction to complete the project. On Saturday the Self- Realization Fellowship will mark the completion of their new auxiliary chapel and open for the first time for services Sunday. Lauren Landress is the assistant director of public relations for the Self-Realization Fellowship, which has its headquarters in Los Angeles, Calif. She said the auxiliary chapel was built to accommodate the overflow from their existing temple one block north of the new chapel. “Over the years, especially recently, there’s been an increase in attendance…and there’s been a need for accommodating the overflow that cannot fit in our main temple any longer,” Landress said. The Fellowship was able to use an existing 2,400 square feet that it had already owned and was using as office space to renovate for the chapel, along with an additional 1,400 square feet created as new construction. The Fellowship implemented a fundraising campaign to pay for the renovation Brother Naradananda, a minister at the Self-Realization Fellowship in Encinitas stands near the entrance to the new auxiliary chapel that can accommodate 200 more congregators.
