Despite what we often believe, bad things can happen and lurking people wanting to take advantage of others can be found in small communities like ours. That is why we need to be alert and prepared so we can be safe when in public. Some people plan a crime and other’s see it as an opportunity too good to pass up. Here are some tips to keep you safe in your vehicle and when carrying a purse. Vehicle Safety * Pay attention when leaving and returning to your car. * Have your keys in hand and finger on the panic button when walking to your car. Are Cattle Producers At Risk? Michael Vogt Marshall County Extension Agent I have been a little concerned over the last several months about the quality and quantity of forages we have to feed our cattle. Many producers have ammoniated wheat straw and baled corn and milo stalks to help supplement fall and winter grazing and feeding. Many of the feedstuffs that cattle producers have available have been drought stricken and may not supply the nutrients and vitamins as in a normal year, which may mean calves are born weak and may not survive. So, this makes me concerned for our cow-calf producers as they approach Spring calving season during the next couple of months. One of the causes of weak calves is the shortage of Vitamin A, sometimes called Weak Calf Syndrome. Larry Hollis, Kansas State University veterinarian, said, 90th Birthday There will be an open house to honor Irma Lupher, who will be celebrating her 90th Birthday. The celebration will be held at the Blue Rapids Community Center on Sunday, February 3rd from 1p.m. to 3 p.m.. In large parking lots, try to shop with someone else at night. * If you see someone sitting in a car, avoid parking near them. * Avoid parking next to a large van. There might be someone inside waiting to grab you. * If someone asks for help as you walk by their car, don’t stop. Go in the store and tell someone that help is needed in the parking lot. * Trust your instincts. If something does not feel right, ask for help. * Never roll down a window if you have car trouble, crack the window just a little to talk. * Avoid leaving your car running for a quick trip in a store. “The lack of anything green to eat last summer left many cattle going into winter either short on or deficient in vitamin A.” “If a vitamin A injection was not given at fall pregnancy check time, many cows will be deficient.” In many cases, the calf lies around and eventually dies if nothing is done to help them. Hollis adds that other problems associated with vitamin A deficiency includes the calf’s increased susceptibility to scours, pneumonia, blindness, and central nervous problems. As a precaution, winter feedstuffs should be supplemented with vitamin A, he said. “Even if an injection of vitamin A was given at pregnancy check time, vitamin A levels may be depleted before grass greens up this spring.” Hollis adds, “If cattle are not supplemented with Vitamin A during last 4 months or longer, and calving within next 30-45 days, then the cows will need Irma Lupher Position Available Cambridge Place has FT C.N.A position available – night shift. Blue Valley Healthcare is an EOE. * Leave only your car key and not your house key when having your car repaired or the oil changed. * Leave your purse at home instead of putting it in the trunk when you get to a destination. * Avoid carrying a spare house key in the glove box. A criminal will discover where you live after looking at the registration papers. * If someone approaches you and says to give them your car, don’t reach for your purse. Get out while you can. * Keep your vehicle locked at all times. Purse * Most men do not carry a purse, but you might help your female friend of relative use safety with her purse. Leaving a purse unattended in a restaurant is a big safety issue. an injection of Vitamin A now! If the start of calving will be delayed for 45 days or longer, cattle producers should start supplemental Vitamin A feeding now.” Also, if cattle producers have been supplementing with Vitamin A during the winter, keep up the good work!” According to Hollis, other management considerations include: • Test corn and sorghum stalks for high nitrate levels. By this time of year, “cattle probably have consumed most of the fallen grain and many of the leaves, and the stalks may be the only feed available to them,” he said. “These stalks contain the highest levels of nitrate in the plant and may be toxic if they become the sole source of feed during periods of snow cover.” • Move cattle to new feeding areas regularly. In short pastures, cattle eat more dirt, * Avoid carrying your purse with the strap over your head. You could injure yourself if someone grabs it. Have your hand on your purse and not just on the strap on your shoulder. * Avoid leaving your purse open or unattended in the shopping cart. * If you are dining out take your purse with you to the buffet or salad bar. * Avoid leaving your purse unattended at church events too. * Downsize your purse. Do you really need to carry all the “stuff” you have in your purse. Make a copy of the contents of your purse. By practicing these safety tips you will protect yourself and your family. I think that is an investment worth making. increasing their risk of picking up bacterial contaminants from the soil surface. Producers can minimize the risk by feeding supplemental forage, or changing feeding areas frequently. • Something else that bears emphasizing, is the importance of colostrum to provide antibodies and nutrients to the calf. Colostrum should be provided by the cow or caretaker within the first 2 hours of life; 6 hours at the latest; 24 hours is too late. There have been reports in Kansas with calves that have calved this winter being weak. But, producers can take action now to prevent any issues with having weak calves. Cattle producers should contact their veterinarian to discuss their options. Help Wanted The City of Marysville is accepting applications for Pool Manager for the 2013 season at the current pool and for the 2014 season with the opening of the new pool. The Pool Manager position will be responsible for day-to-day activities in managing and operating the pool. This position will be a seasonal, full-time position during the summer pool season (May through August) and qualified candidates must be able to devote full time to this position without conflicting obligations. Some duties will be required during the months of March and April related to interviewing, hiring and training lifeguards. WSI certification desired. Prior experience in managing a pool is preferable but not required. The manager must be able to manage in a high stress, high profile environment and be able to defuse situations calmly.
