path to your door is when
you're in the bathroom. In the
case of the Ice Age project, I
was wrong. Dozens of you
of making this happen
and here we are. I can’t thank
you enough!!
George Callison.
Today has been a very long
time in coming –over 10,000
years, in fact! We are all
extremely lucky to be here;
think about it: we are all
descendants of survivors of the
Ice Age! We owe them a debt
of gratitude. We stand on their
shoulders as well as the shoulders
of all who have helped us
to be who we are.
And, for me, I’m thankful for
having been born and raised in
Blue Rapids and having been
further educated at K-State and
KU. My parents (Lois and Red
Callison), my amazing late sister
(Priscilla), my special Grade
School and High School teachers
(Miss Erma Marvin, Mrs.
Dorothy Johnston, Mrs. Tharp,
Mike Hrynewich, and Ed
Brychta), Sunday School
teacher (Jack Haller), scoutmaster
(Jim Guthrie), my
childhood/lifetime pals (Larry
Parsons, Mike Brown, Johnny
Brown, Pat and Phil Osborne,
and Jon Brake), and many
other individuals (especially
Ed Drennan, Ken Brown,
Leslie Parsons, Basil McKee,
Father Lyle Hampton, Junior
Beasley, Wilma Burr, Viola
Schuman, and Rudy Broky)
were inspiring or made extra
efforts to help me. It is for
them and for the City of Blue
Rapids that I was motivated to
do this project.
By now, many of you know
that the main reason for an Ice
Age Monument in Blue
Rapids is that our terrific town
was founded in a place with
abundant natural resources
brought here or created by the
glaciers of the Ice Age over
10,000 years ago.
The namesake rapids on the
Blue River that were harnessed
to power early industries,
the sand and gravel
deposits used for construction
and roads, and the rich soils
for agriculture are all here
because of the Ice Age glaciers.
Our Ice Age Monument in
Blue Rapids honors this
ancient geological heritage.
So, whenever you’re here,
think about Ice Age times,
about glaciers, mammoths,
and extremely old rocks from
even more ancient times and
share your thoughts with others.
Talk about it.
Let this be a place where
you can let your curiosity run
free, a place where you can
imagine times of very long
ago, and a place where you
can think about what tomorrow
or what a 100,000 tomorrows
might bring.
Let’s celebrate curiosity,
imagination, creativity, and
accomplishment.
Let’s celebrate the Ice Age
and let’s celebrate being here,
together, in Blue Rapids . .
.today!"
This spring, the Kansas State
demonstrated how they enacted
the Challenge at their school.
There are a series of Fuel Up
to Play 60 Challenges that youth
can get involved in throughout
the 2012-2013 school year.
Each Challenge focuses on a
different aspect of the program
and provides the opportunity for
students to work together to
showcase what they have
learned about “fueling up” with
nutrient-rich foods and getting
at least 60 minutes of physical
activity every day. By completing
Challenges, students get the
chance to have their submission
featured in the Challenge
Showcase on the national Fuel
Up to Play 60 website and earn
exclusive online badges and
rewards for the participation on
FuelUpToPlay60.com.
Art Exhibit to Showcase Luci Swim
“Luci Swim: A
Retrospective” is the next
exhibit at the Lee Dam Center
for Fine Art. The show opens
on Thursday, May 31, and concludes
Sunday, June 10. The
exhibit is sponsored by the
Marshall County Arts
Cooperative.
Swim is a recent graduate of
Marysville High School, and is
the daughter of Eric and Lori
Swim. Swim has been drawing
since she was a little girl. She
started taking art classes with
April Spicer, art teacher at
Marysville High School, in her
eighth grade year, and continued
through her high school
years. Swim enjoys making
her subjects come alive on the
paper, and loves experimenting
(05/11/2012)(readMedia)-- The
names of more than 4,800 candidates
for degrees at the
University of Kansas this
spring - representing 94 Kansas
counties, 45 other states and 47
other countries - have been
announced by the University
Registrar.
The Class of 2012 includes
more than 1,600 students who
completed degree work in summer
and fall 2011. Because KU
conducts only one formal
Commencement ceremony
each year, many of these gradu-
Plans are underway for
Blues, Brews, and BBQ – an
outdoor concert and street
dance held in conjunction with
the Chamber of Commerce’s
Poker Run and Friday Night
Cruisin’ and Marysville Main
Street’s Big Blue BBQ
Championship. The event
begins at 8:00 p.m. and will be
held in the parking lot at the
corner of 7th Street and Elm
Street, Marysville. The event is
sponsored by the Marshall
County Arts Cooperative and
Landmark Enterprises, Inc.
As the name suggests,
rhythm and blues will be performed
while participants
enjoy the scents of BBQ from
those participating in the BBQ
championship; additionally, a
beer garden will be available
serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic
drinks.
The headlining band is a
rhythm and blues band,
Mainstreet, a six-piece show
band who has been entertaining
with new art techniques.
The exhibit showcases
Swim’s art from 8th-grade
through 12th-grade, and is a
journey through the growth of
her artistic skills. It includes,
among many others, the award
winning pieces “Newport,
OR,” a fishing boat in ink and
watercolor, “Untitled,” a water
pitcher in charcoal, “Wrinkles
in Time,” an old woman in
charcoal, and “Self #17,” a self
portrait in wax encaustic.
Swim will attend the
University of Chicago this
coming fall. She plans to major
in English with a minor in studio
art, and plans to get her
master’s degree in Library
Science after finishing her
undergraduate degree.
ates will return Sunday, May
13, for the university's 140th
Commencement. More than
half of the members of the
Class of 2012 are expected to
participate.
Faculty and candidates for
degrees will assemble at 10
a.m. along Memorial Drive for
the procession, which begins at
10:30 a.m. The program begins
about 11:30 a.m.
Area students are as follows:
Gregory Dixon, of Bremen,
Kan. He will receive a Doctor
of Philosophy in Education in
Curriculum and Instruction.
the Midwest for over twentyfive
years. Mainstreet was
formed in Manhattan in 1979
by drummer Richard “Felix”
Smalley. A year later, he was
joined by keyboardist Rod
Manges who writes the
arrangements for the band and
Daryl Batchelor who plays
trumpet and percussion.
Smalley grew up in Marysville,
and is a 1973 Marysville High
School graduate.
The band is rounded out with
a saxophone and guitar and features
vocalist Jessica Furney, a
Wamego native.
“This isn’t just a band, these
are my best friends. So many
bands run into problems with
ego conflicts, but this is like
family. We’ve been lucky to
attract some of the top musicians
in the state to work with
us over the years,” Smalley
said.
The band’s repertoire pulls
from the last six decades of
rock, rhythm and blues, blues
In 2008, Swim won the
ExplOregon Coast National
Geographic contest by drawing
a picture of a wheat field morphing
into ocean waves; to
complement her drawing she
wrote an essay about why she
wanted to visit the Pacific
coast. During her freshman
year, Swim received medals
from the Highland and Cloud
County art shows; she received
several honorable mentions at
the same shows during her
sophomore year.
In February 2011, she won
Best of Show in the
“Kansans...As Talented As You
Think” high school art contest
for her charcoal drawing of a
water pitcher and lemon. This
year, she won two medals from
Governor Brownback Signs Pro-Growth Tax Legislation
Topeka – Joined by small
business owners, state legislators,
Governor’s Council of
Economic Advisors,
Governor’s Cabinet members
and Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer, M.D.,
Kansas Governor Sam
Brownback signed one of the
largest tax relief measures in
Kansas history into law today
at the Capitol in Topeka. The
new law cuts state income tax
rates for all hard-working
Kansans by 14 to 24 percent
and eliminates state income
taxes on more than 191,000
small business owners.
Governor Brownback
likened Senate Sub. for House
Bill 2117 to a shot of adrenaline
into the heart of the Kansas
economy.
“My faith is in the people of
Kansas, not the government’s
ability to tax and redistribute.
They know better how to spend
their money and I believe they
will do incredible things with
it,” Brownback said. “Today’s
legislation will create tens of
thousands of new jobs and help
make Kansas the best place in
America to start and grow a
small business. Now is the time
to grow our economy, not state
government, and that’s what
this tax cut will do.”
Kansas Revenue Secretary
Nick Jordan said the new law
will leave $1.1 billion in
Kansans’ pockets during the
next two years to save, spend
and invest.
"After the lost decade for
jobs in Kansas, Governor
Brownback has been incredibly
focused on creating a pro
growth environment that will
increase Kansas families'
income and accelerate small
business growth," Jordan said.
"This focus has turned the
budget deficit he inherited into
a strong surplus, and, with historic
tax relief now in place,
Kansas is poised to lead
America's economic recovery."
The law collapses the current
three-bracket structure for individual
state income taxes (3.5,
6.25 and 6.45 percent respectively)
into a two-bracket sys-
exemption eliminates certain
non-wage business income for
small business owners (income
reported by LLC’s, Subchapter-
S Corporations, and sole proprietorships
on lines 12, 17,
and 18 of federal form 1040).
The law also flattens the tax
structure and increases the
standard deduction amount for
single head-of-household filers
from $4,500 to $9,000; and for
married taxpayers filing jointly
from $6,000 to $9,000.
Dynamic projections show
the new law will result in
22,900 new jobs, give $2 billion
more in disposable income
to Kansans and increase population
by 35,740, all in addition
to the normal growth rate of the
state.
Speaker of the House Mike
O’Neal praised the new tax
law.
“By reforming income taxes
in Kansas, our state will start
building a solid tax foundation
that will create a strong economy
for the years to come. We
must continue down a path that
brings prosperity to the residents
of Kansas and HB 2117
will move our state toward a
healthy and vibrant economy,"
Speaker O’Neal said.
Rep. Arlen Siegfreid, the
Majority Leader in the House,
said the new tax plan paints a
brighter future for the state.
"There's a reason surrounding
states are racing to keep
pace with Kansas in providing
tax relief," Rep. Siegfreid said.
"They recognize this was a significant
victory in a constant
battle to attract jobs and grow
our economy."
The chair of the House
Taxation Committee, Rep.
Richard Carlson, said Kansas is
raising the bar on pro-growth
tax policy.
VH State Golf/Season Wrap Up
By Coach Ryan Noel
The Valley Heights golf team
was challenged on Monday at
The Highlands Golf Club in
Hutchinson, but responded well
and fought through some tough
holes. Brenden Dobrovolny
received the 7th place individual
medal for his efforts, shooting a
92 on a very difficult course.
The Valley Heights team finished
7th in the state.
Overall, the boys played their
best on the course, which featured
a plethora of "gunch",
trees, and many holes that had
turns sharper that 90 degrees.
Individually for the Mustangs,
Dobrovolny led with a 92. Alec
Doner improved from his
Regional score and carded a 110.
Levi Berger, in his last high
school golf meet, shot a 111, and
Patrick Hale's 121 contributed to
the VH 4-man score. Michael
Clark shot a 130 and Devin
Griffee shot a 144.
"I was happy for our team and
especially for Levi. Ending his
golf career at the State
Tournament is a great accomplishment."
"Looking forward, this team
has the ability to be at state again
next year. This is Brenden's second
trip, and his swing is good
enough for a top 5 finish as a
Senior. Alec and Patrick both
By Susan A. Latta - CEA
Marshall County Extension
Agent
Beans are called a “super
food” for a good reason. A
bean is actually a seed, packed
full of nutrients. Beans are a
vegetable that provide important
vitamins and minerals.
They are also a low-fat, lowsodium,
cholesterol free source
of protein, so are also a part of
the meat and beans group.
Beans are a unique food that
counts as either a vegetable or
protein, but not both at the
same meal. Beans are a
very good source of fiber,
folate, and iron and may reduce
the risk of heart disease and
certain cancers because they
contain antioxidants. They are
inexpensive and widely available.
Beans do not have a
strong flavor on their own, so
can easily take on and complement
other flavors in food.
They can complement meat or
take the place of meat, as a protein
source in a meal.
While much of the work
relies heavily on beans as a protein
source, Americans are
learning to cook a wide variety
of foods with beans. There are
so many kinds of beans available
in food stores, and they are
convenient, since canned beans
are already cooked and ready to
use. Sometimes flavors are
added to canned beans and may
be labeled “chili beans” for
example. Do not drain and rise
these, since flavor would be
lost. But, with regular canned
beans, drain and rinse them
under running water to reduce
the gaseous affect.
The following bean recipes
require few ingredients and can
be doubled and frozen for a
later meal. Flavor is often
enhanced when cooked a second
time. Also, anytime we
“cook once and eat twice,” we
save money and prep time.
