scholarships for <strong>Shawnee</strong> residents. The <strong>City</strong><br />

is committed to providing quality recreational<br />

opportunities to all residents regardless <strong>of</strong><br />

their economic condition. <strong>Shawnee</strong> residents<br />

who qualify for financial assistance may<br />

apply for limited scholarship funds to <strong>of</strong>fset<br />

the registration cost <strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong> our classes,<br />

programs and memberships. A maximum<br />

<strong>of</strong> $100 per family is available during a 12<br />

month period. A maximum <strong>of</strong> 50% funding<br />

is available per class, program or activity.<br />

Join <strong>Shawnee</strong> Parks and Recreation and INTRUST Bank for the 8 th annual <strong>Shawnee</strong> Summer Concert<br />

Sunday, <strong>August</strong> 29 th marks the 21 st Annual Tour de<br />

<strong>Shawnee</strong> Bike Ride, sponsored by the <strong>Shawnee</strong> Parks and<br />

Recreation Department, <strong>Shawnee</strong> Hy-Vee, and the Santa<br />

Fe Cosmopolitan Club. This year’s event will benefit<br />

the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Riders can<br />

choose from a 12-mile, or a 24-mile route. Entry fee <strong>of</strong> $25<br />

includes a t-shirt, breakfast, lunch, rest stop snacks and drinks,<br />

medical assistance, SAG vehicle support and mobile bike repair.<br />

The tour will start and end at Power Play Family Entertainment<br />

Center, <strong>Shawnee</strong> Mission Parkway and Pflumm.<br />

Early registration must be postmarked by <strong>August</strong> 13 th . After<br />

Attention all art enthusiasts! Students <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Shawnee</strong><br />

"Painting With Watercolor" classes taught by Valda Robison<br />

will be exhibiting their paintings the evening <strong>of</strong> Wednesday,<br />

October 13. Expect to be impressed and inspired as we show you<br />

our very best work in watercolor. You are welcome to come and visit<br />

with the artists and see their artwork. See various landscapes, ocean<br />

views, still life, and more. Drinks and hor's derves will be served,<br />

we hope that you can make it.<br />

About Valda Robison<br />

In 1998 Valda Robison began to fulfill her long-held desire to draw<br />

and paint, and spent the next several years studying drawing and<br />

watercolor painting. By 2004 she was selling her artwork. In 2003,<br />

she joined the Greater Kansas <strong>City</strong> Art Association, and in 2004<br />

entered her first juried show, winning an Award <strong>of</strong> Merit. Her work<br />

has been routinely accepted in area juried art shows and has won<br />

several awards. In 2006 Valda began teaching watercolor. She now<br />

teaches a large class at the <strong>Shawnee</strong> Civic Centre for the <strong>Shawnee</strong><br />

Parks and Recreation Department throughout the year on Thursdays<br />

see page 17 for details.<br />

children the opportunity to work one-on-one with a<br />

parent. The clinic teaches children a variety <strong>of</strong> soccer<br />

skills including: dribbling, kicking and passing, trapping,<br />

throw-ins and agility. Your child will use fun, safe, and<br />

developmentally appropriate equipment. The soccer<br />

exercises will become increasingly more difficult as the<br />

class progresses and children show improvement. Parents<br />

sportsmanship. We will use developmentally appropriate<br />

tennis immediately - even if they have never picked up a<br />

and woods for the long and short games. These various<br />

skills will be used to get you familiar with this great game.<br />

spiking and other skills will be covered. Simplified game<br />

play that takes a step by step pathway towards power<br />

volleyball will be taught as well. The primary goal <strong>of</strong><br />

other basic techniques that will help you get comfortable<br />

on your skateboard. Protective helmet and proper pads<br />

are required during this course (if you don’t have any<br />

class you will be on your way to unlocking the secrets<br />

holistic approach to children’s exercise through music,<br />

A fun way for beginning tumblers to gain experience,<br />

such as bear walks, crab walks, bunny jumps, to help<br />

improve a young child’s gross motor skills. Our curriculum<br />

improves balance, agility, coordination and flexibility.<br />

This 6 week fun and energetic fitness program is designed<br />

individual(s) registered in this program arising out <strong>of</strong> or in anyway connected with participation in this program. The undersigned and the participant(s) authorize the<br />

<strong>Shawnee</strong> Parks & Recreation Department to use at its discretion, any photograph(s) (black/white or color) taken <strong>of</strong> the participant(s) while participating in the program<br />

and waive any and all claims that the participant(s), the undersigned or their heirs or assigns may have or claim to have resulting from such photograph(s) or reproduction<br />

there<strong>of</strong>.<br />

Cancellation Policy: If you must cancel from a class, call (913) 631-5200 at least five (5) business days before the program begins.You may transfer to another program<br />

or receive a full refund. You will be notified if a program is canceled due to insufficient enrollment. No refunds will be issued after the start <strong>of</strong> a class.<br />
