when the carriage is overturned, signed, inscribed For<br />

the Royal Society, and dated 1789, on verso, aquatint<br />

with elaborate hand-colouring, heightened with gum<br />

arabic, each c.300 x 500mm. (11 ¾ x 19 ¾ in), unframed<br />

*** This pair of plates, presumably for presentation to<br />

the Royal Society, are examples of the inventiveness<br />

that made John Hatchett the foremost carriage builder<br />
