Emergency Luminaires - Testing Systems
INTELLEM
•Provides simple and reliable automatic testing
of emergency lighting
•Tests fully comply with EN50172 & BS5266
• Easy to install, stand alone operation
• No data cable required
• Simple offset feature to stagger testing
• Optional infra-red programmable version
• 28 day test cycle to ensure tests are performed
on same day of the week
Intellem offers a simple and competitive solution to the
mandatory requirements for the regular testing of
emergency luminaires. The basic product, Intellem Self
Check, requires no setting up. Converted luminaires are
simply installed, providing instant monitoring of the
emergency circuit and automatic testing at intervals
compliant with legislation. System status is clearly
indicated via the LED flash sequence and on-board
audible alarm, which can be disabled if required by the
user. Infra-Red offers enhanced flexibility. A hand held
infra-red programmer is used to set up convenient test
times, read luminaire and fault status, initiate manual
tests or change testing intervals. Intellem is particularly
beneficial in refurbishment projects, as no additional
cabling is required.
WHERE TO USE INTELLEM
• Offices • Public houses
SYSTEM OPERATION
• Intellem is available as a simple and basic automatic testing
system - Intellem Self Check, or with enhanced infra-red
programming and 2 way communication - Intellem Infra Red.
System operation for Self Check and Infra-Red is the same,
except where enhancements for Infra-Red are detailed below
• An Intellem diagnostic unit is fitted into all suitable self-contained
dedicated emergency luminaires and mains luminaires
converted for emergency operation. Infra-Red versions also
have the addition of an infra-red transmitter and receiver
• Upon initial power up the unit self calibrates, determining the
correct values for the parameters to be checked during
monitoring and testing
• Test intervals are determined from the moment of initial power
up, with a built in automatic 12 hour offset to ensure that
luminaires installed during the day are tested at night.
• Intellem Infra-Red testing schedules can be reconfigured using
a hand held programmer. The time and day counter can be
programmed and read via the hand held unit
• A full duration test is initiated 36 hours after initial power up,
to commission the unit
• Luminaire status is continuously monitored and information
provided via the luminaire LED and on-board audible alarm.
In the event of a fault, the alarm sounds and the precise nature
of the fault indicated by the LED flashing sequence
• Intellem Infra-Red units can be interrogated, with details of the
luminaire status downloaded to the programmer display
• Testing is automatically carried out as per the Intellem testing
schedule, to meet and exceed the requirements of EN50172.
Intellem Infra-Red has an optional test set-up to meet BS5266,
or can be programmed for customised test schedules
• The first function test occurs 28 days after the initial
commissioning test, or as programmed with Intellem Infra-Red
units.
• Any faults identified during testing are indicated as above
• Manual short (10 second) or full duration tests can be
initiated with Intellem Infra-Red, via the hand held programmer
LUMINAIRE DIAGNOSTIC UNIT
Compact unit, factory fitted into all compatible self-contained
emergency luminaires. Self calibrates upon power up for charger
and battery characteristics. Has a built in day and time counter
and carries out all testing automatically. Removable link disables
the on-board audible alarm, as required. Removable offset link
fitted to Self Check versions, which advances testing cycle by one
day if removed, thereby staggering testing in adjacent luminaires
if required. Infra-Red units have socket to accept plug in
LED/transmitter/receiver module, which is fitted integral to host
luminaire or in a remote ceiling mounted plate.
Diagnostic unit dims: L54 x W38 x D24mm.
LUMINAIRES
Intellem Self Check and Infra-Red can be integrated into the
majority of Menvier and JSB self contained emergency luminaires
or exit signs and most Crompton Lighting emergency converted
fluorescent luminaires. See the individual product entries for details
of compatibility. Intellem can also be used with Convertalite and
ADV conversion kits, when fitted by Cooper Lighting and Security.
• Read the test number, time and day when last test was
conducted
• Read the precise nature of fault condition status
• Instigate manual short functional or full duration tests
• Change the test sequence and frequency (advanced setting)
• Temporarily silence audible alarm or reinstate
TEST PROGRAMMES
Intellem provides automatic testing that conforms and exceeds the
current British Standard BS5266 Part 1 (1999) and the European
Standard EN50172. Other test regimes can also be programmed
as required when Intellem Infra-Red is specified. Testing and
monitoring is undertaken as follows:
BS 5266 TEST REQUIREMENTS
Daily
Notes:
1. Intellem operates on a test cycle of 12 test events, performed every 28 days
2. The Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997 and EN50172 omit the six monthly 1 hour test, replacing it with an annual full duration discharge test after the first year and every year thereafter
To overcome difficulties in permanently occupied premises, Intellem
Self Check units are provided with an offset key which advances
the test program by 1 day. Every second luminaire, when
adjacent, would be fitted with the key in order to provide full
duration emergency lighting coverage at all times. this would be
overcome by programming with Intellem Infra-Red luminaires.
Hand held programmer
Testing is carried out on a 28 day (4 week) test cycle, to ensure
that testing is always performed on the same day of the week for
convenience.
Following a genuine mains failure of 15 minutes or more in the
previous 24 hours, the next scheduled test is automatically delayed
for a further 24 hours, to allow sufficient time for the batteries to
recharge. Manual full duration tests are also inhibited for 24 hours
following a genuine mains failure or scheduled test.

LED STATUS INDICATION
If the diagnostic unit detects a battery or charger fault during
