16 The Australian territory of Christmas Island is situated in the Indian Ocean about 380 km south of Java. The island is the summit of a submarine mountain. Its 80 km coastline is an almost continuous sea cliff. There is virtually no coastal shelf and the sea plummets to a depth of about 5000 m Sheetlet 80% actual size within 200 m of the shore. Christmas Island is surrounded by an encircling coral reef. Its waters teem with beautiful tropical fish and other sea life. With its clear waters and sea cliffs, Christmas Island is winning a world-wide reputation as a unique dive site.
The issue This special issue of 20 stamps features various fi sh and marine life found in Christmas Island waters and typical of tropical coral reefs in the Indo-Pacifi c region. These include: butterfl yfi sh, tropical snapper, whale shark, triggerfi sh, angelfi sh, coral cod, groper, surgeonfi sh and damselfi sh, along with other marine life, such as green turtle, coral, clam, sea star, starfi sh, sea squirt and nudibranch. As well as the sheetlet of 20 stamps, the issue includes fi rst day covers, and a sheetlet pack, Post’s fi rst for a Christmas Island issue.
