CREDENTIALS & MEDIA SERVICES Media Entrance Media attending home games and morning skates will no longer be able to access the event level through stairwell one; all entry to the building must now go through security control (located on 6th street between F and G). Credentials to Capitals games may be picked up at the media entrance, which is open from three hours prior to game time until the midway point of the first period. All media must show a photo ID and are subject to a security search. Media Credentials Credentials are issued to media who cover the Capitals both seasonally and on a game-by-game basis and are required for admission to the media areas at both Verizon Center and Kettler Capitals Iceplex. All credentials must include the bearer’s name and affiliation and are non-transferable. Season credentials: All season credentials are issued prior to the season. Season credentials do not guarantee a seat in the press box; credential holders must contact a member of the Capitals media relations staff in advance in order to reserve seating. A media credential cannot be used to sit in spectator seating areas. Media who do not have a season credential may apply for single-game credentials. These requests must be received no later than 3 p.m. the day prior to a game. Please direct all credential requests to communications coordinator Megan Eichenberg (MEichenberg@washcaps.com). The credential is good only for the game printed on the tag and must be displayed to Verizon Center security personnel to gain entry to restricted media areas. A letter on file from the sports editor, news director, etc., addressed to the Media Relations Department, Washington Capitals, 627 N. Glebe Rd., Suite 850, Arlington, VA 22203, will facilitate the issuing of this type of credential. Non-North American media outlets are required to request media credentials through the National Hockey League by contacting David Keon at dkeon@nhl.com. Capitals media credentials are issued to print, television, radio and online media outlets that adhere to professional standards, regularly produce quality content and have a demonstrated audience. Space limitations may impact the decision to grant credentials. The final decision on all applications for media credentials rests with the Capitals media relations staff; we reserve the right to revoke media credentials at any time. News Releases Accredited members of the media who would like to receive Capitals news releases via e-mail should contact a member of the media relations staff with an e-mail address. Among our releases is “Caps Today,” sent daily during the season, which includes an updated practice schedule, recent transactions and the top storyline of the day. Audio Files The Capitals regularly post updated audio files in mp3 format on their website, WashingtonCaps.com and on twitter.com/CapitalsPR. Radio stations, websites and other media are welcome to utilize these audio clips. To access the site, visit http://media.nhl.com. MEDIA FACILITIES – VERIZON CENTER Press Work Area and Press Lounge The press work area and press lounge are located on the Event Level (ice level). The press lounge is located directly adjacent to the media work area. Meals are served buffet style, catered by Aramark, two hours prior to game time. Media members will be charged $10 per meal (receipts provided). All food must be consumed in the press lounge and may not be taken to the press box. The press work area is located adjacent to the press lounge. There are reserved seats for beat media and additional work spaces with telephones and wireless Internet access. Press Box The press box is on the sixth floor of Verizon Center on the penalty box side of the ice. Seats are on an assigned basis only. Please check the seating charts in the press room or press box, or check with the press box attendant for your seat assignment. The press box features wireless Internet access. In order to ensure seating in the press box, it is necessary for all media to notify the Capitals media relations staff of their attendance by 3 p.m. the day prior to the game. If you do not have an assigned seat, please check with a member of the media relations staff. Media Parking Media parking at Verizon Center is extremely limited and assigned prior to the season. There are numerous lots within walking distance of Verizon Center, and Verizon Center is adjacent to the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro Station. Gallery Place can be reached on the Red, Yellow and Green lines. It is also one stop away from Metro Center, which provides service to the Blue and Orange lines. Metro will remain open at least one hour after the conclusion of any playoff games that go into overtime. Photography Verizon Center has a limited number of photo positions. All photo positions will be assigned prior to the game by team photographer Patrick McDermott (202.431.4526 cell). Daily print and wire services receive priority for the prime positions. Freelance photographers will not receive credentials; all photographers must be on assignment. Still photographers must receive permission in advance from a member of the media relations staff for postgame admission to the Capitals locker room. MEDIA FACILITIES – KETTLER CAPITALS ICEPLEX Work Room Kettler Capitals Iceplex features a media work room adjacent to the ice, near the entrance of the Capitals locker room. The work room features ethernet cables and complimentary wireless Internet access. MEDIA ACCESS AND INTERVIEWS Practice Sessions The media has access to all team practices at all practice facilities, including game-day skates, in accordance with the NHL Media Regulations. The media is allowed to enter the team locker room five minutes after the first regular player who has participated in the entire practice leaves the ice. In the @washcaps WASHINGTONCAPS.COM 3
4 Media Information event of a team meeting, the media will be allowed access immediately following the conclusion of the meeting. The locker room is closed to the media prior to and during practice. Per NHL Media Regulations, media access at Kettler Capitals Iceplex is limited to the team’s main locker room and the entrance to the locker room. All other areas of the training center are off limits to media. Capitals game-day skates are typically held at 10 a.m. at Kettler. Pregame The Capitals locker room is closed prior to game time, although requested players will be made available during a 30-minute window beginning two hours prior to faceoff, with priority given to broadcast rightsholders. Television networks, including rightsholders, requesting pregame interviews with a player are asked to request these times prior to or during the morning skate. Head coach Adam Oates is available to the media following all morning skates at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Those media members who are unable to attend that day’s morning skate and wish to interview Oates at Verizon Center must contact Capitals senior director of communications Sergey Kocharov (skocharov@washcaps.com) prior to the morning skate to arrange a time to meet with Oates before the game. Postgame The Capitals locker room will be open to working media five minutes after the conclusion of the game. Head coach Adam Oates’s press conference will follow approximately 15 minutes after the game in the Interview Room (adjacent to the Press Room) If the media wishes to interview a player who is not present in the locker room, contact a Capitals media relations representative who will locate the player. Video All outlets are prohibited by the National Hockey League from shooting game footage of any Capitals game being played at Verizon Center. Television and online outlets are welcome to shoot Capitals practices, but are restricted to broadcasting five minutes of on-ice video content from any one practice. There is no limit to the length of interviews that outlets may broadcast. Players’ Personal Telephone Numbers At no time will a player’s home or mobile phone number be released to either the media or the public unless the player specifically authorizes such release. Autographs Media attending Capitals practices or games are strictly forbidden from requesting autographs. Any person with a media pass observed asking players for autographs will be asked to leave and may not be granted credentials in the future.
