Give me at least one benefit and one drawback of working with a VLE BENEFITS · Allows discussion/problem solving solutions with immediate feedback · Being able to chat and co-operate with other teachers, therefore help and support each other · Fun and the ‘wow’ factor, real time contact · The support/encouragement available from others as well as getting SS for use in own classes – such a system could potentially reduce workload. · Great to have instant contact with others in a virtual classroom · Immediacy of response · Immediate feedback on comments · How much I have developed professionally in ICT DRAWBACKS · Too many people talking can become confusing/difficult to follow · Time required to upload shows · Requires some typing skill/speed · For kids requires good reading level · Problems downloading/submitting due to time involved · It can be very time consuming · Intimidation/fear factor · It would actually be nice to meet the teachers in person before the course commenced. · When I get on, time goes out the window · Technology! Any other comments · I enjoyed working with SS. It is very teacher and pupil friendly. Children can use it with ease after only a few experiences. Opens up lines of development in literacy and numeracy. P5 · I went into the pilot not knowing much about this programme or its potential. It was good in that I was working with a colleague in my school so we could compare notes and progress. As I got more involved my children and I learnt many new things. The children loved hearing their voices and seeing their drawings in the Slideshow. I felt I got excellent support, especially with technical problems encountered. Although I was unsure at first, if I would have enough technical skill to produce the end results, I found as I progressed through the Slideshows that I amazed myself as did my children. Slideshow is an excellent piece of software which is very child friendly and even our small KS1 children can use it easily. · The time allocated fro making the SS was perhaps too short. I found it difficult to fit in with so many other commitments on class time. It seemed too rushed and made me feel frustrated that I could not experiment more with both graphics and sound. All in all it was a very enjoyable experience. P3 · Both myself and the class have really enjoyed and benefited from involvement in this project. For example, we have used PowerPoint before but the lower ability children found all the options etc confusing. They were able to use SS to produce something, by themselves, with which they were delighted; whereas more able children were extended by creating their own images in ‘Fresco’ to use in their Famine SS. Personally, I was introduced to a range of very useful software which I may otherwise never have bothered about until managed services and C2k is up and running in school. The entire process also helped my own ICT skills, and see how such programmes can be integrated in to classroom activities. · I have loved this Mary (as if you couldn’t guess). If you think I can help in any other way, just give me a shout. · If this approach was adopted when introducing any new software, teachers would not experience many of the difficulties they currently do! Being introduced to the resources with time in a relaxed setting allows teachers to experiment and enjoy the software. They are more likely to then use the software positively with children. Also knowing that immediate help is at hand (by telephone/email/conferencing) re-assures staff. I thoroughly enjoyed my involvement in this pilot scheme and would recommend a similar approach to any future initiatives. 13
