9.2 Design of the Multiple Head Unit<br />

Photograph 2-a and Drawing C-5-2014 show the two end bearing blocks.<br />

It will be noted that an upper corner <strong>on</strong> each block (<strong>on</strong> the same side)<br />

is cut off at an angle of 45 degrees. This 45 degrees cut provides a<br />

face for mounting the <strong>multi</strong>ple head unit as shown in Drawing C-5-2014.<br />

The <strong>multi</strong>ple head is mounted at an angle of 45 degrees so that the gap<br />

between the head and the <strong>drum</strong> may be seen more easily by the observer.<br />

A lamp placed behind the <strong>multi</strong>ple head unit can provide a background of<br />

light so that a gap of <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e or two thousandths of an inch betvi/een the<br />

<strong>drum</strong> and head can be easily observed by the operator, '^he 45 degree angle<br />

also enables the operator to place himself in a c<strong>on</strong>venient positi<strong>on</strong><br />

while adjusting the gaf) bet'.veen the <strong>drum</strong> and the head.<br />

Drawing ^^-5-2014 shows <strong>on</strong>e stati<strong>on</strong> of the 44 <strong>channel</strong> <strong>multi</strong>ple head.<br />

A descripti<strong>on</strong> of this <strong>on</strong>e head will apply to all since all are alike.<br />

The head <strong>on</strong> which the fine, <strong>on</strong>e mil wire is mounted is made of bakelite.<br />

The bakelite head is mounted <strong>on</strong> a rigid alumintim mounting bar for two reas<strong>on</strong>s:<br />

1.<br />

Tq reduce the vibrati<strong>on</strong> of the heads.<br />

2. To provide a means of adjusting the gap between each<br />

head and the <strong>drum</strong>.<br />

As can be seen in the drawinj^, the aluminum bar has a deep round bottomed
