Director of Curriculum

In the beginning…
• 2009-10 School Year
• 24,000 Students
• 3,300 Students with IEPs
• 2,500 in LRE, in our general education classes
working with support
Our students can’t READ at the high school level!

Superintendent’s
Charge:
We HAVE to do
SOMETHING!

Barriers:
Funding
Identification
Focus: Lowest
25%

Could fund our
Title I sites and
IEP students
Districtwide

Throughout the curriculum
• Systemic
• Grade level /
Course focus
• Campus-wide
• All students

WE HAVE 1,637
STUDENTS USING
THE PROGRAM.
33% ACCESS IT
OUTSIDE THE
SCHOOL DAY.

Student Motivation
- Use the Achieve3000 poster and
give students stickers next to their
name for every article they
complete with a 75% or higher score
on the first try
- Give students raffle tickets for each
article they complete, and hold a
weekly/twice monthly raffle
- Station adult aides near students
who are having the most difficulty
staying on task

Student Motivation
- Assign the same article to a
specific group of readers and
have the teacher (or aide) work
directly with that group on the
article
- Rearrange the desks in the
class so all students are back-toback
to create less of a
distraction for ADHD students

Student Motivation
- Allow students to play in the
Games section of Achieve3000
when they complete an article
- Give students goals. For
example, when students finish
at least one article every two
days they earn a prize (pencil,
sticker, pen, homework pass,
etc.)

Student Motivation
An example of holding
students accountable for
engagement of material.
Cornell note-taking and
“marking the text”

Parent Involvement
• Use of e-mail within program
• Student results sent weekly
• Parents can “see” all parts of the program
• Plan to bring parents onto campuses more to
engage them in resource
• Partner with grants and AT&T to provide
$10/month high-speed Internet access

“Mary”
• ADHD
• Wouldn’t “do”
anything academic of
any kind
• LOVES “TeenBiz;” has
changed her

The work continues….
• Achieve3000 is the “layer on top,” not “instead
of”
-Teachers incorporate it into their classroom
their way.
• Solution engages students at THEIR reading level
– Mastery is not achieved overnight; steady progress is
“rewarded”
• Ongoing professional development is key
– Localized, personalized, available, and responsive
