3. On going main activities/ Programme in <strong>Baran</strong>:<br />
Various livestock development programmes are aimed to increase the productivity of the animals on sound<br />
scientific methodology. The main activities and programmes of the department includes:-<br />
I.Breed improvement programme using superior germplasm<br />
Objectives:<br />
Progressive genetic improvement for milk production in important breed / type of cows and buffaloes by following<br />
scientific methods IS GOING ON.<br />
a) Production and distribution of superior pedigreed bulls for use in Cattle and Buffalo Breeding Programme.<br />
b) Preservation of indigenous germplasm.<br />
c) Production of upgraded crossbred animals suitable for specified breeding tracts.<br />
II. Veterinary health care & Disease Control Programme.<br />
The veterinary health coverage programme is the most vital input for the livestock production programme. The<br />
genetic traits of the superior exotic and crossbred livestock cannot be exploited fully unless they are provided<br />
specialized health care and management as they are highly susceptible to the diseases.<br />
Veterinary Health Care Programme: The health of the animals of the Dstrict is being taken care of by 68<br />
veterinary institutions comprising of eight 1st grade Veterinary Hospitals (VHF), 28 Veterinary Hospitals (VH), 4<br />
Veterinary Dispensaries, 28 Sub-Centers (SC). These institutions are situated in far flung areas of the <strong>District</strong>. The<br />
sub-centers and dispensaries are headed by technical subordinate staff i.e. Livestock Assistant (LSA) & Veterinary<br />
Assistant (VA), respectively. Whereas the VH, VHF & VPCs are headed by the state officer cadre staff i.e. Veterinary<br />
<strong>Of</strong>ficer (VO). and Senior Veterinary <strong>Of</strong>ficer (SVO . All these institutions are stationary with working jurisdiction of<br />
villages falling in their 8 Km. radius area.<br />
• Disease Control Programme: The animals are vaccinated regularly against many fatal diseases viz.<br />
Hemorrhagic Septicemia (HS), Black quarter (BQ), Enterotoxaemia (ET), Sheep Pox, Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD)<br />
etc. The vaccination is done at a nominal cost i.e Rs. 1.00 per dose for HS/BQ, Rs. 0.50 per dose for ET/Sheep<br />
Pox and at a subsidized rate of Rs.2.00 per dose for FMD.<br />
• Assistance to States for Control of <strong>An</strong>imal Diseases (ASCAD) Disease Diagnostic Center: <strong>An</strong>imal<br />
disease diagnostic facility under Assistance to States for Control of <strong>An</strong>imal Diseases (ASCAD) 1 Disease<br />
Diagnostic Laboratory For effective control of diseases in animals is working at <strong>District</strong> head quarters to the vast<br />
livestock population. The Laboratory functions as a Disease investigation unit for diagnosis and extending expert<br />
opinion to various departmental Institutions at district level. Besides this it also conducts routine diagnostic work<br />
on the material received from the field Institutions.<br />
III. RINDERPEST ERADICATION SCHEME<br />
We have achieved I, II & III and for maintaining the status of the FREE FROM RINDERPEST<br />
INFECTION country following activities are going on in state.
• Ordinary Village Search - A programme of Village Search with an aim to search for the physical<br />
presence of Rinderpest disease in livestock is going on.<br />
• Stock Route Village Search - A programme of Village Search with an aim to search for the physical<br />
presence of Rinderpest disease in livestock of villages situated on stock routes.<br />
• Day Book Inspection - It is an Institutional Search programme in which village level records of the cases<br />
showing RP like symptoms are followed up with laboratory investigations in order to prove or disprove the<br />
presence of Rinderpest Disease through laboratory investigations.<br />
IV. Extension Activities<br />
o Fodder Development<br />
o The <strong>District</strong> runs a programme of distribution of fodder seed mini kit under assistance of central govt.<br />
through the department to promote the green fodder production. In this regard the distribution of no. of mini<br />
kit (0.1hect.) for better forage production to the farmers in the year 2011-12 was as follows…<br />
o A total of 6 Qtl. of seeds were distributed in the year 2011-12<br />
o Gaushala Development Programme Under the Rajasthan Goshala Act 1960 till now 8 Goshalas has<br />
been registered. These Goshalas have been established by the public trusts for maintaining old, infirm,<br />
unproductive cows and its progeny. Goshalas may be used for preservation & conservation of indigenous<br />
breeds. The central government as well as state government is also assisting these Goshalas for cattle<br />
development.<br />

V. Sheep Migration: Migration of sheep is a regular feature of sheep rearing in the <strong>District</strong>. Sheep from<br />
southern parts of Jodhpur-Jaisalmer pass through Bali, Abu-road through Palanpur, reach up to river beds in<br />
<strong>Baran</strong> and Shivpuri where they spend about two months. Usually, the farmers set out on their journey in<br />
winter and return to their homes in early monsoon.<br />

It is envisaged to facilitate prevention of environmental pollution and check spread of livestock<br />
diseases, provides employment opportunity to rural poor engaged in carcass collection, flaying<br />
and by-product processing by producing better quality hides and skins and thus improves the<br />
income levels. Proper disposal of carcasses of animals is mandatory under the Infectious &<br />
Contagious Diseases in <strong>An</strong>imal, Act 2009 and implementation of the scheme will to a great<br />
extent ensure its compliance.<br />

6. Need of hour: Livestock, especially dairy cattle improvement, is a crying need for <strong>Baran</strong><br />
<strong>District</strong><br />
7. Strategy: focusing on awareness among livestock keepers for scientific animal husbandry practices, Mass<br />
Castration of scrub bulls to check ND recycling, higher conception rate up to (i.e. 61.5%), doorstep AI service,<br />
Expanding A.I. Coverage; up to all breedable females through PPP mode Bull distribution for NS, under umbrella<br />
of <strong>An</strong>imal husbandry <strong>Department</strong>. availability of skilled AI workers, financial incentives and strict management.<br />
