I. INTRODUCTION<br />

<strong>Kenya</strong><br />

<strong>Kenya</strong> is an East African country that borders Ethiopia in the north, Sudan in the northwest,<br />

Uganda in the west, Tanzania in the south and Somalia in the east (see Figure 1).<br />

<strong>Kisumu</strong><br />

<strong>Kisumu</strong> is <strong>Kenya</strong>’s third largest city and is located about 400 kilometers northwest of the capital<br />

city, Nairobi. The city is located in <strong>Kisumu</strong> East District, one of the 19 districts of Nyanza<br />

Province. <strong>Kisumu</strong> City is the capital of Nyanza Province and is considered western <strong>Kenya</strong>'s<br />

most important urban area.<br />

The leading causes of morbidity and mortality in <strong>Kisumu</strong> City include malaria, respiratory tract<br />

infections, malnutrition, diarrhea and HIV/AIDS (<strong>Kisumu</strong> District <strong>Health</strong> Office, OP Morbidity<br />

Summary Tables 2006-2009). Pneumonia, anemia, skin diseases, ulcers, urinary tract infections,<br />

intestinal worms and tuberculosis (TB) are also common diseases.<br />
