many of the causes could be
prevented!

WHO WE ARE AND
WHAT WE DO?
Save the Children is the world's largest
independent organization for children, making
a difference in children's lives in over 120
countries. It is made up of 29 national organizations
with a global staff of more than 14,000
people working together.
From emergency relief to long-term development,
Save the Children helps children to
achieve a happy, healthy and secure childhood.
Save the Children listens to children, involves
children, and ensures their views are taken
into account.
Save the Children secures and protects
children's rights to food, shelter, healthcare,
education, and freedom from violence, abuse,
and exploitation.
The Problem
Globally
- 1.7 million children die in their first day of
life.
- 3 million die within one week.
- 4 million die within their first 28 days.
- 8.8 million die before their fifth birthday.
In Egypt
- 28 out of every 1000 life birth die before
reaching the age of five years.
- 87% of childhood deaths occur before a
child’s first birthday.
The Cause
The underlying causes of child deaths are
poverty, inequality, exclusion, weak governance,
violent conflict, the global political economy,
climate change and natural disasters. A small
number of treatable or preventable diseases
are the direct cause of most deaths among
under-fives. Problems during pregnancy, birth,
and care in the first few days of life account
for 17 per cent of all child deaths. Pneumonia,
diarrhea, malaria and measles together
account for 38 per cent of child deaths.
The Solution
Every One is Save the Children's most
ambitious global campaign which was launched
on October 5th, 2009. Our objective is to
help the world achieve the United Nations
agreed upon Millennium Development Goal
(MDG) 4, which aims to reduce the under-five
mortality rate by two-thirds of the 1990 rate
by 2015. We believe that the life of every child
is important and valuable. It’s vital that Every
One of us takes action.
Our Goal in Egypt is to work with and
through the Egyptian governmental and nongovernmental
organizations to continue
reducing under five mortality rates and to
overcome disparities between areas.
Our Strategic Objective
is to increase availability of quality services
and improve practices related to maternal,
newborn, child health and nutrition, and to
support the efforts of the Egyptian government
in sustaining these services.
Our Ambition is to build a partnership
of private sector and public sector
players, who are equally committed to reducing
newborn and child deaths. By 2015,
through our programs, we hope to reach
millions of children and women of maternal
age each year with proven maternal, newborn
and child services.
