Dear Families and Friends
A VIEW TO THE FUTURE
We are very proud of our senior students at Gembrook Primary School. They are wonderful big buddies to our Prep students. They
have been great sports leaders at our whole school sporting events and lunchtime activities program and they were wonderful at
the junior sports afternoon. Joel and Chloe are excellent school captains. They are doing a tremendous job presenting the assembly
each week and have enjoyed other leadership opportunities. They will meet with local state and federal politicians a number of
times during the school year. In school the students participate in a range of leadership programs that develop their team and
leadership skills. This week the newsletter has been written by a number of our brilliant 2012 student leaders….
Enjoy your week
Amazing Race
“Could all the grade 5’s and 6’s go into the middle
room” said Mr Fraser
“We are going to do the Amazing Race again this
year!” Tim said to the entire grade 5 and 6’s
“YAY!!!!!!!!!!” “Could everyone get into a group
of 4 or 5?”
We got into a group of 4 or 5. I was in a group
with Emily, Makenzie and Ryan. Before we started
we had to make paper hats.
The Amazing Race is where we have different
activities around the school. After we finished
the activities we walked down to the skate park
and had some more activities to complete! It
was a really fun day and I wish we could have the
Amazing Race again!
Cross country
It was a warm sunny day at Gembrook Primary School
and the teams were ready with their flags waving round
the whole cricket pitch. The captains were yelling their
lungs out and the crowd went wild. It was almost time
to start the race. The preps went up to start for the first
heat. It took them a bit of time to get organised but
they got it in the end. After that went the ones and
twos. The grade ones did one lap of the oval. The grade
twos did two laps of the oval. It was then the grade
threes and fours turn. They did a lap of the oval and a
lap of the town. They had great fun! Lastly, the grade
five’s and six’s went onto the track to beat it out for the
winner. The grade six girls’ winner was Chloe Goodie
and the Grade six boys’ winner was Shae Mackrill. After
all the races were finished it was time to announce the
places of the teams … 4 th Tynong, 3 rd Beenak , 2 nd Redwood
and the best team of all to take the fabulous
shield was KURTH KILN (obviously the best team)! We
had a great afternoon for what was a great day.
Eco Warriors
Over the last year our school has been working on becoming a five star
sustainable school. We have achieved this award. We were able to get
four water tanks earning us a star. We had to be smart with our electricity,
so we got twelve solar panels, earning us another star. Now we’re
focusing on our compost and recycling. We have bins with mixed recycling,
organic waste, recycling and landfill. So there’s our third star
down. Each term 2 eco warriors are chosen to put the compost in the
bins and collect the worm pee and put it in the garden. Four eco warriors
are chosen to do the recycling. Two eco leaders are going on excursions
to learn about the environment and how to help others in our
school community learn about sustainability.
EDEC Athletics
In term 1, the people who came first in an event at
our house athletics went to the Cockatoo little
athletics track to participate in the EDEC athletics.
The events were sprints 100metre, 200 metre,
1500 metre, shot put, discus, hurdles, long jump,
triple jump, high jump, batten relay and circular
relay. There were not enough people in the
1500metres, so everyone ran together. The winner
of the 1500m was Chloe Goodie. Gembrook
came third place and Macclesfield won. We had a
very fun day. The people who came first are looking
forward to going to Zone athletics.
House Swimming
GO BEENAK, GO BEENAK!
It was house swimming day and everybody was excited.
The races began. First were the freestyle events, then the
backstroke, breaststroke and finally butterfly. After all the
main events came the novelty events with Beenak winning
and Redwood second, followed by Kurth Kiln and Tynong.
The following champion swimmers went on to compete at
the EDEC, Zone and Regional Swimming Championships:
Shae, Dana, Ryan, Ella, Aaron, Kira, Frankie and Lynton.
MacFarlane School
The 5/6’s have been skyping MacFarlane Primary School in
the Northern Territory.
On the 19th June, some students from MacFarlane School
are coming to visit Gembrook Primary School. The grade
5/6’s and the students and teachers from MacFarlane Primary
will be having a sleepover at the school. We will be
having a movie with popcorn, games and other fun activities
for everyone to enjoy. All the 5/6’s are really excited
and we can’t wait for them to come down. We think having
the MacFarlane School visit us will be a great opportunity
to make new friends and meet new people. We think it will
be lots of fun and we have an awesome time skyping.
Makenzie Moody
JellyBeans Music
For the past 2 weeks the whole school has been enjoying the
program, Jellybeans Music. The instructor, Hannah, is really
nice and she makes you want to join in with all the activities
and do the absolute best you can. Last week the grade 5/6’s
took turns using different instruments including triangles,
drums, castanets, tapping sticks and tambourines and learnt
how to follow a piece of music. By the end of the lesson we
managed to produce a pretty good version of a piece of music
called Liberty Bell. It’s lots of fun and I’m sure that the whole
school looks forward to the session each week.
Lightning Premiership
On Tuesday the 5 th June all the EDEC schools will have an event
called Lightning Premiership. All the kids from the six schools
come together to have a competition day of football, netball
and volleyball.
We have been training all term for this awesome competition.
All the students are fit, healthy and impressively good at their
sport. Selby, Cockatoo, Macclesfield, Emerald and Menzies
Creek better watch out.
MULTI NEWS
The Gemtimes have generously donated over $4,000
for us to revamp the multipurpose room. The
Gemtimes are very generous to donate all that money.
Thank you Gemtimes! The money shall be well spent.
Ryan says, “It’s good that they have donated all that
money”. So far we have replaced the roofing, installed
shelving, cleaned external walls, and we are
about to start to do the internal
painting, installing netball rings, remove
the kitchen and install some
roller doors.
Andrea, Dannie and I all went to a Japanese festival in Box Hill last Sunday. The first thing we went to see was the Japanese
drumming and it was soo loud it was shaking my arms!
Next we went down to the next floor and I was shocked by how many stores there were. First place I went to was the
stuffed toys store. Andrea went straight to the kimonos and she bought a really cool green one. Dannie and I bought
some lollies at the marketplace. I bought a prize pack and I won a pack of cards.
Some of the other cool thing I saw was ikebana, taiko, origami, manga and SOOOO much more.
I would like to thank Andrea for taking me and allowing me to enjoy the wonderful experience.
Bang, bang, bang, goes the taiko drum last Sunday at Box Hill town hall.
There were lots of fun things to do and see like taiko drums, comedy, lots of
musical instruments, kendo, sumo, kimono contest, choir, traditional Martial
Arts and lots more.
I loved the primary school students with the drums, they were awesome! We
got hungry so we went to the food court. There was so much to choose from.
I had sushi, crab and meatballs.
The displays I saw were origami, model trains, bonsai, ikebana, sumo, calligraphy,
kokeshi dolls and many more. It was a great experience and so much fun.
Everyone there was very polite.
The school produce market would like to expand to include local (small time) growers to sell their
produce. If you know anyone who fits this description please ask them to contact Karen on 0407 889 331
