Highlights Rural Touring Scheme
presents Grimm Tales
The show, from leading
children's theatre
company Theatr Iolo, is
based on the haunting
fairy tales of The Brothers
Grimm and has been adapted by former
Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. It includes
the stories of Hansel and Gretel and the
original Cinderella story, Ashputtel. Director
of the show Kevin Lewis says: "The Grimm
stories are notoriously dark and quite
sinister, but they've been watered down in
popular culture into well-known stories like
Cinderella that are really quite safe. What
we'll be aiming to do with Grimm Tales is
bring back a little of that depth that makes
the stories so interesting - in my experience,
children love that contrast between light
and dark, good and bad, and they can often
handle more than we as adults give them
credit for. Basically the show will be full of
well known fairy tales as well as some not
so well known ones, all told with wit, fun
and a bit of good old-fashioned scariness!"
Sunday 11th November
Highlights Rural Touring Scheme
presents CountryBoy's Struggle
CountryBoy's
Struggle is a unique
debut solo show,
written and
performed by
Maxwell Golden.
The show follows an
MC's journey from the cliffs of Cornwall to
the streets of London. Playing over 30
characters and mixing Hip Hop, movement
and comedy, this is your first chance to
catch a tour-de-force performance.
CountryBoy's Struggle has been devised in
collaboration with Martin Stannage and
Contact Theatre's artistic director Baba
Israel. Writer/Performer Maxwell Golden
says: "It's about what it's like living in a
rural area and wanting to make urban
music, then moving to the city and finding
it's not what you expect - especially when
your heart and soul is on the beaches and
with the community you grew up in.
Although it is performed predominantly
through the aesthetic of modern UK Hip
Hop theatre, the real emotion underlying
the story is always of upmost importance."
CountryBoy's Struggle integrates music,
poetry, MCing, as well as physical comedy
to reflect both rural and urban
environments. It has just been selected for
THE SPACE, a digital arts media service
and commissioning programme, formed by
the BBC and Arts Council England.
CountryBoy's Struggle will be transformed
into a 12-part series of two-minute
storytelling music videos, which will
released virally on a dedicated BBC web
page, accessible via phone apps and
accessible on television by pressing the
Red Button. This project will promote a 4week
run with Pleasance at the Edinburgh
Fringe Festival and promote the
Autumn/Spring tour that follows.
Highlights Rural Touring Scheme
presents A love like Salt
With their unique
combination of live
music and timeless
tales, the Devil's Violin
Company weave a
powerful spell of
melody and mood. This
superbly crafted show brings the ancient art of
storytelling firmly into the 21st century. A Love
Like Salt features three wonderful tales that
have gripped us for hundreds of years, stories
full of passion and longing, drama and danger,
stories of love and lust, of life and death. They
also happen to be tales that inspired two of our
most popular storytellers: Chaucer and
Shakespeare. King Lear, Franklin's Tales and the
Wife of Bath's Tale are skilfully spun into stories
for the present, grippingly told by one of the
country's most renowned and innovative
storytellers, Daniel Morden together with three
fabulous musicians on violin, accordion and
cello. Music makes up 50% of the evening and is
skilfully woven into the stories. The show will be
an accessible introduction for new audiences to
some of the central works of British literature
and will also throw new light on these works for
audiences already familiar with KING LEAR and
THE CANTERBURY TALES. Love is put to the test
Highlights Rural Touring Scheme
presents David Copperfield
A child born towards the small hours on a
Friday night is destined to be unlucky in
life. Replete with comic, cruel and strange
characters, Dickens' semiautobiographical
novel follows a
vulnerable boy on his journey to manhood.
It is a story of the struggle against poverty
and obscurity: a story of loss, of
loneliness, and the betrayal of innocence.
Dickens' favourite novel is brought to the
stage with all its dark comedy by Mad
Dogs & Englishmen Theatre Company in
this fast-paced and faithful adaptation.
Directed by Ann Courtney, the cast of two
capture the hilarity and pathos of Dickens'
writing with finesse, depth and ingenious
dexterity. As part of the internationallycelebrated
bicentennial year of Dickens'
birth, Mad Dogs & Englishmen's
adaptation of David Copperfield is
compulsive theatre. 'Of all my books, I like
this the best... Like many fond parents, I
have in my heart of hearts a favourite
child. And his name is David Copperfield.'
Copperfield)
Highlights Rural Touring Scheme
presents The Incredible Dr
Guttmann
In 1948, a doctor at Stoke Mandeville
Hospital had the audacity to stage the first
games for disabled ex-service men and
women on the very same day as the
London Olympics. The Incredible Doctor
Guttmann is a new play based on the true
story of this remarkable man. Known
simply as 'Poppa', Guttmann was a
charismatic, witty yet incredibly driven
individual, whose work and revolutionary
ideas touched the lives of people all over
the world. His personal story is equally as
powerful. As a young Jewish doctor he
saved hundreds of patients from the gaschambers
of Nazi-Germany before fleeing
with his family to take refuge in England
where his work gave new hope to spinalinjury
patients. Guttmann's past and
present, personal and professional life
fuse to create a dynamic theatrical
landscape for the unfolding drama. The
research for this play included patients,
friends and family members of Guttmann
for whom life would be very different
without his pioneering work. The play is at
times shocking, outrageously funny and
incredibly moving.
Rainfall
Inspired by Haiku, (traditional and muchloved
short form of Japanese poetry) and
Origami (the art of paper folding), this is
vibrant and interactive story telling of
Japanese folklore. Set in a magic garden,
the Head Gardener
Gardener, named
Little Sunshine, and
Little Rainfall blend
four stories of the
naughty Storm Fox,
through traditional folk songs, dance and
a hands-on paper making experience. This
is a charming theatrical experience for
younger audiences, celebrating traditional
Highlights Rural Touring Scheme
presents Sarah McQuaid in
Concert
Renowned for her
warm, engaging
stage presence,
Sarah McQuaid is
a versatile and
beguiling
performer. In addition to her own elegantly
crafted originals, she interprets traditional
Irish and Appalachian folk songs,
Elizabethan ballads, 1930s jazz numbers,
surprise covers and lively guitar
instrumentals with panache and
poignance. Her deliciously earthy voice
delivers a powerful emotional punch that's
matched by her distinctive, eloquent
guitar style. Add this to a real rapport with
her audience, and you have all the
ingredients of a great night out. "A great
songwriter and traditional singer, and a
wonderful guitarist." -- Mike Harding, BBC
presents Magical Christmas Tree
Tour
The Magical
Christmas Tree
Tour is Pete
Morton, Maggie
Boyle, Chris
Parkinson and a
tree! Not just any
old Christmas
tree, but a very magical one. It makes these
three unsuspecting folk performers do things
they wouldn't do the other eleven months of
the year. After five successful seasons touring
the UK, this December show is a festive treat,
where the audience pick scrolls from the tree
and make every night a unique occasion! This
is a high-flying combination: a singer/
songwriter extraordinaire, a superb traditional
singer and one of the folk scene's most
sought-after instrumentalists. Pete, Maggie &
Chris all excel in their own departments.
Together they deliver a richly textured
collection of vibrant new songs, beautiful old
carols and stunning instrumentals - plus all
three voices in three-part harmony...dancing
and other antics... and they have a great time
doing it. Superb acoustic music!
After great success last
year with Red Riding,
Horse and Bamboo bring
you a show brimming
with amazing things to
look at, great storytelling
and wonderful
characters. A selfish King
replaces his melodic songbird with an all
mod-cons mechanical gizmo - then wonders
if something is missing from his life. Horse
and Bamboo make theatre that is
fantastically visual. This age old story from
Saturday 9th March
Mickleton RnB Club presents
King King featuring Alan Nimmo
"Softly softly" is not a maxim
that King King are familiar
with. Since surging into life
two years ago they have
barely stopped for breath,
and their electrifying sound and scorching live
shows have generated more of a thunderous
roar than a buzz. Straight out of the blocks it
was clear that King King is a band which knows
how to make an entrance. An exhilarating
debut at the Monaghan Blues Festival created
such a stir that it prompted organizer Somhairle
MacConghail to remark: "King King aren't just
playing the festival. Word is that King King ARE
the festival". With a reception like this there's
little surprise that the phone has been ringing
off the hook ever since, and the last year has
seen them bring their inimitable brand of multifaceted
blues rock to the Great British Rhythm
and Blues Festival, the Edinburgh Jazz and
Blues Festival, Abertillery Festival and even
Glastonbury. This was in addition to a
seemingly non-stop series of rousing live shows
across the UK and Europe, much to the delight
of the band's burgeoning fan base.
