to New York City in [856, where<br />

he contributed verse to leading publica-<br />

tions, and was editorially connected with<br />

the "Tribune," 1859-61. He was located<br />

at Washington, D, C, as war correspond-<br />

ent <strong>of</strong> the New York "World" during the<br />

Civil War days <strong>of</strong> 1861-63; and in the<br />

confidential employ <strong>of</strong> Attorney-General<br />

Bates, 1863-64. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

New York Stock Exchange, 1869-1900.<br />

He subsequently devoted his entire time<br />

to literary work, and made his home in<br />

Bronxville, New York. The honorary<br />

degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Arts was conferred<br />

upon him by Yale College in 1871, and by<br />

Dartmouth College in 1873; that <strong>of</strong> Literarum<br />

Humaniorum Doctor by Columbia<br />

University in 1892, and that <strong>of</strong> Doc-<br />

tor <strong>of</strong> Laws by Yale University, 1894.<br />

Mr. Stedman acquired a wide reputa-<br />

tion as a literary critic <strong>of</strong> unusual discrimination.<br />

He lectured at Johns Hopkins<br />

University upon the "Nature and<br />

Elements <strong>of</strong> Poetry," upon the creation <strong>of</strong><br />

the Turnhull chair <strong>of</strong> poetry, the first<br />

chair <strong>of</strong> its kind in America, 1891, and re-<br />

peated the same course at Columbia College,<br />

1891, and at the University <strong>of</strong> Penn-<br />

sylvania in 1892. He was frequently<br />

chosen to deliver original poems on im-<br />

portant public occasions. He served as<br />

/ice-president and president <strong>of</strong> the Ameri-<br />

can Copyright League. He edited, with<br />

He was married, November 2, 1853, to<br />

Laura Hyde, daughter <strong>of</strong> Asa and Eliza-<br />

beth (Rogers) Woodworth, <strong>of</strong> Danielson-<br />

ville, <strong>Connecticut</strong>.<br />

TINGIER, Lyman Twining,<br />

Jurist, Legislator.<br />

Lyman Twining Tingier, <strong>of</strong> Rockville,<br />

was born June 9, 1862, in the town <strong>of</strong><br />

Webster, Massachusetts, the son <strong>of</strong> Seymour<br />

Allen and Sarah (Twining) Tingier.<br />

Both <strong>of</strong> his parents were natives <strong>of</strong> the<br />

town <strong>of</strong> Tolland, Massachusetts, his<br />

father, born in 1829, the son <strong>of</strong> Edward<br />

Lay Tinker and Laura (Steele) Tinker,<br />

and his mother, born in 1832, the daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Lyman Twining, <strong>of</strong> Tolland, Massachusetts,<br />

and Paulina (Shepard) Twining,<br />

<strong>of</strong> Blandford, Massachusetts. The<br />

family name <strong>of</strong> Tinker became Tingier in<br />

1857-<br />

Seymour Allen Tingier was a graduate<br />

<strong>of</strong> Williams College, and for many years<br />

was a practicing lawyer in Webster, Massachusetts,<br />

removing in 1878 to Thomp-<br />

son, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, where he engaged in<br />

farming until his death in 1888. He held<br />

several public <strong>of</strong>fices in Webster and<br />

Thompson. Sarah (Twining) Tingier<br />

died at Webster in 1864, and in 1870, Seymour<br />

Allen Tingier married Mary L.<br />

Tucker, daughter <strong>of</strong> Charles and Olive<br />

( Atwell) Tucker, <strong>of</strong> Webster, Massachusetts,<br />

who survived him, dying at Thomp-<br />

son in 1902.<br />
