<strong>of</strong> the victims who, after removal to a hospital on the Isle <strong>of</strong> Shoals, and a<br />

two weeks' detention in quarantine, were detached. In September <strong>of</strong> the<br />

same year Mr. Greene was detailed as engineer in charge <strong>of</strong> the Port Ad-<br />

miral's steamer Frolic, in New York Harbor. He reported for duty and, at<br />

the same time, having tired <strong>of</strong> the service, he tendered his resignation and<br />

proceeded at once to Troy, N. Y., to resume the general practice <strong>of</strong> his<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> engineering.<br />

In 1870 he was appointed engineer to the State Commission; 1874,<br />

division engineer <strong>of</strong> the eastern division <strong>of</strong> the State canals; and, in<br />

June, 1874, deputy State engineer, which position he filled until 1878,<br />

when he resumed his practice in Troy. Was appointed director and pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> geodesy, etc., in the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which<br />

position he occupied for thirteen years, resigning in 1891, when he was<br />

at once made the consulting engineer <strong>of</strong> the Arnold Print Works at<br />

North Adams, Mass., in which capacity he had been for some time con-<br />

nected <strong>with</strong> the Berkshire County Commission; both these positions Mr.<br />

Greene still retains. From 1873-1890 he was Colonel <strong>of</strong> Engineers, N. G.<br />

S. N. Y., attached to the staffs <strong>of</strong> Major-General J. B. Carr and Brigadier-<br />

General Amasa J. Parker. He has been for many years a director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Troy City National Bank; <strong>of</strong> the Citizens' Steamboat Company; <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Glens Falls Brick and Terra-Cotta Company; and director and vice-presi-<br />

dent <strong>of</strong> the McDonald Stone Company, Watervliet, N. Y.<br />

Mr. Greene is a member <strong>of</strong> the Military Order <strong>of</strong> the Loyal Legion<br />

<strong>of</strong> the United States ; <strong>of</strong> the Society <strong>of</strong> Founders and Patriots ; <strong>of</strong> the Sons <strong>of</strong><br />

the American Revolution ; <strong>of</strong> the United Service Club <strong>of</strong> New York City ; <strong>of</strong><br />

the American Society <strong>of</strong> Civil Engineers ; <strong>of</strong> the American Society <strong>of</strong> Naval<br />

Engineers; <strong>of</strong> the American Society <strong>of</strong> Naval Architects and Marine Engi-<br />

neers; and a Fellow <strong>of</strong> the American Geographical Society. In March,<br />

1894, on the organization <strong>of</strong> the Committee <strong>of</strong> Public Safety <strong>of</strong> Troy, con-<br />

sisting <strong>of</strong> one hundred picked citizens, Mr. Greene was unanimously elected<br />

chairman. He resides (1902) at Troy and Adams, N. Y.<br />

2262. ALBERT SIVILIAN - GREENE (Joseph L.^ Thomas',<br />

Joseph'*, John-', James-, John') was born at Adams, N. Y., August 3,<br />

1838. He was a civil engineer, graduated in 1858, from Rensselaer Poly-<br />

technic Institute, Troy, N. Y. <strong>The</strong> name "Sivilian" has no family significance.<br />

When Albert was an infant, about being named, his brother, David<br />

M., became greatly interested in the character <strong>of</strong> Rev. Sivilian, whose<br />

biography he was reading, and he insisted that his baby brother should bear<br />

the name <strong>of</strong> the man whose nobility <strong>of</strong> mind had so impressed him. Albert
