3915. Edwin C. Bailey, a successful journalist, who became editor and proprietor<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Boston Herald. He was married and lived and died in Boston.<br />

<strong>The</strong> only child named is a daughter, Mrs. Shepard <strong>of</strong> Boston, but there<br />

may have been others.<br />

3916. Francis Bailey, died when about thirty years <strong>of</strong> age.<br />

3919. (Daughter) Bailey, who married (?). Said to have been "so remarkably<br />

handsome and fascinating that she always created a disturbance!"<br />

<strong>The</strong> only stirviving son <strong>of</strong> William Pitt Fessenden, General Francis<br />

Fessenden, still resides in Portland, Me., "a gallant man <strong>with</strong> a splendid<br />

war record, who lost a leg in the Civil War. " During a long period <strong>of</strong> years<br />

he never failed to honor his paternal grandmother, Ruth Greene, <strong>with</strong> a<br />

visit, whenever he chanced to be in Boston, and pleasant relations were<br />

always kept up by his father, also, <strong>with</strong> the children <strong>of</strong> her second marriage.<br />

General Francis had three brothers, two <strong>of</strong> whom were also in the United<br />

States service: James D., bom 1833, died 1882, Brigadier and Brevet<br />

Major-General Volunteers; Samuel, born 1841, was mortally wounded at<br />

the second battle <strong>of</strong> Bull Run, August 31, 1862; William H., born 1835,<br />

died 1898.<br />

2689. NATHANIEL « GREENE (Nathaniel , " Peter W.^ Richard '<br />

Peter *, Peters John', John') was born in Boscawen, N. H., May 20,<br />

1797. His educational advantages were somewhat limited, and at the<br />

early age <strong>of</strong> ten years he went to Hopkinton, N. H., as clerk in a store. In<br />

18 1 2 his father died, leaving an embaiTassed estate, which compelled Na-<br />

thaniel to struggle on under adverse circumstances. But he was a great<br />

reader and faithful student, and, after connection for a time <strong>with</strong> the New<br />

Hampshire Il'a?- Journal at Portsmouth, he removed to Haverhill, Mass.,<br />

where he had the sole supervision <strong>of</strong> the Gazette when but eighteen \'ears <strong>of</strong><br />

age. In 181 7 he started his own paper, <strong>The</strong> Essex Patriot, and in 1829 was<br />

appointed Postmaster <strong>of</strong> Boston, Mass.<br />

Mr. Greene possessed some poetic talent and published occasional<br />

verses' over the nom do plume <strong>of</strong> " Boscawen." He afterward published a<br />

History <strong>of</strong> Italy (translation), and translated about fifty volumes from the<br />

German. He also distinguished himself in politics. He travelled in Europe<br />

extensive!}", and when in Paris met <strong>with</strong> a great affliction in the death <strong>of</strong><br />

his only daughter at Panama. He married Susan, daughter <strong>of</strong> Rev. Wil-<br />

liam Batchelder <strong>of</strong> Haverhill, Mass. Mr. Greene was christened "Peter,"<br />

but having great respect for his father's name, he wished to assume it, and
