B E A R B R A N C H DUTCH OVEN DELIGHTS July 27 1 session Saturday Program #13BB44 Dutch ovens have been used for centuries to make delicious meals. Spend some time around the campfire learning more about the history of this unique device and sample some delicious dutch oven treats! Bring camp chairs or blankets to sit on. Age: all TIME: 7-8:30pm FEE: $12 BUSY BEAVERS August 2 1 session Friday Program #13BB45 How long can a beaver hold its breath? Do beaver get wet? What’s the difference between a lodge and a dam? Learn the answers to these questions and more when we venture out in search of Hashawha’s resident beavers. Age: 6-adult TIME: 7:30-9pm FEE: $7 PRIMITIVE SKILLS – FIRE BOW August 3 1 session Saturday Program #13BB46 The discovery of fire was one of the most significant in human history. Try your hand at friction fire making and craft your own fire bow kit to take home. All participants should bring a pocket knife. Create your own toad house for your garden and learn how to create an inviting habitat for toads. Meet a live toad! Enjoy a leisurely stroll on wooded trails before roasting marshmallows over the campfire. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES GARDENING DAY Sunday, June 2 9-11am Help weed the Nature Center’s plant gardens. Be prepared to work hard and get dirty! Service hours available. Age: 12-adult CAMP COUNSELOR TRAINING Sunday, June 2 2-4pm Assisting with Bear Branch’s summer Camps is a great way for teens to earn service hours. Applications must be picked up at our center. Age: 14+ TRAIL MAINTENANCE Sunday, July 7 9-11am Help clear Hashawha’s trails. Tools will be provided. Service hours available. Age: 12-adult MONARCH TAGGING & TRAINING Sunday, Aug 18 OR Aug 25 1-3pm Learn all about Monarch Watch. Safely catch, tag and release butterflies, and record crucial data to help track the migration. Participants are required to volunteer at the Monarch Madness Festival on Sunday, September 15. Age: 12-adult SPECIAL EVENTS SUMMER CAMPS Registration is underway for the 2013 summer camps at Bear Branch. There are six different camps to choose from. Call for more details. Animals in need of sponsors include birds of prey, snakes, and turtles. Support the critters or you can even sponsor a particular animal. Birthday Parties Looking for a wild time on your birthday? Nature Center birthdays include the use of the Yurt and a 45-minute naturalist-led program. Fee is $150; set-up and clean-up are the responsibility of the scheduling parent. Environmental Education Classes and Field Trips Call today to schedule a program - public, private and home-school groups are welcome. Programs can be scheduled as Nature Center field trips or to have a naturalist come to your school. Fees: $3/ person for Carroll County groups (a $25 minimum applies); $4/person for out-of-county groups (a $50 minimum applies). VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Junior Naturalists Age: 12-18 Saturday, July 6, 1-3pm Saturday, August 10, 1-3pm REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED - Need service hours for school? Junior Naturalists help with various projects throughout the park ranging from trail cleanup, invasive plant removal, gardening, and bluebird monitoring. Students age 12-13 must have a parent present at the Park while volunteering. Front Desk Volunteers Age: adult Interested in volunteering for the Nature Center front desk? Answer the phones, take program registrations, answer nature questions, and sell items from the nature shop. No experience necessary, positive attitude and love of nature preferred. PINEY RUN PARK & NATURE CENTER 410-795-6043 April 1 thru October 31 (OPEN-season) PARK “open-season” hours and entrance fees: Park gates are open 7 days a week from 7am until sunset. Entrance fees are collected at the Gatehouse upon arrival ($5/vehicle for Carroll County residents; $10/vehicle for all others). Season Vehicle Passes are available from the Park Office and Gatehouse for $40/vehicle for Carroll County residents; $55/vehicle for all others. *Please note vehicle entrance fees are waived for Nature Center programs listed in this section for pre-registered participants ONLY (those registered at least 24 hours before program), unless otherwise stated in the program description. NATURE CENTER “open-season” hours: Open Wednesday through Saturday 11am-5pm, and Sundays 12-5pm; closed Mondays and Tuesdays. November 1 thru March 31 (OFF-season) PARK “off-season” hours: Park gates are open weekdays 8am-4pm; closed weekends and holidays. No entrance fees will be collected during the “off-season” and the lake is closed for boating. Visitors are still welcome to walk the trails, fish from the shores, and visit the Nature Center. NATURE CENTER “off-season” hours: Open Monday through Friday, 11am-4pm; closed weekends & holidays. In case of inclement weather… if snow/icy conditions or heavy rains/thunderstorms are in the forecast, call before coming to your program to see if it has been canceled/ postponed. If Carroll County Government is closed, the Park and Nature Center are also closed. If Carroll County Schools are closed, delayed, or dismissed early, Nature Center programs that fall during those time periods are canceled as well (please see Inclement Weather Policy for Recreation & Parks programs in the back of this brochure). Nature Center Membership: The Nature Center offers memberships to help support its activities. Newsletters and program announcements are mailed to members regularly. Members receive discounts on our popular nature camp and on purchases made at the Nature Center Shop, as well as many “Members Only Programs” which are free or at a reduced rate. Membership to the Nature Center does NOT include the entrance fee into the Park.
