Meet at the park, ind a view you like, and paint! It is delightful to paint outside<br />

‐ “plein air” as it is called. One can learn so much by looking intently at a land‐<br />

scape and capturing it on paper. Learn techniques of painting and the fun of<br />

composition. Decide between acrylics, watercolors, or oils. Fun for all, you can<br />

even come as a family. A material fee of either $8 for acrylics or watercolors, or<br />

$20 for oils or just bring your own is due to instructor at beginning of irst<br />

bisque whether you are a beginner or novice. Sometimes everyone gets<br />

a little stuck and needs a bit more advice to inish their piece and make it<br />

special. Learn everything from how many and what kinds of brushes to<br />

choose, to what colors will make your project bright and beautiful. We<br />

An eight‐hour course that meets the state requirements for boating and<br />

personal watercraft safety. In order to operate a motor boat or personal<br />

successfully complete this certiication course. Class includes a review of<br />

chart reading, course plotting, marlinspike knot tying. Age: all under 13<br />

must be accompanied by a paying adult. No early bird or senior discount.<br />

fun! Recognizing that we are all “works in progress” and that<br />

women in particular tend to make sure other things or other<br />

people progress before themselves, we have created a fun group<br />

to provide time for friendship, support, activity, and new experiences while<br />

encouraging the growth of each individual into a better, more enhanced<br />

woman. Come alone or grab a girlfriend and take time to enjoy, and even<br />

share your ideas for future meetings and happenings. One meeting per<br />

month ‐ additional trips/speakers/events will be scheduled on varying days/<br />

Summer Adventure <strong>Program</strong><br />

This “super summer passport” program is designed for 1 st through<br />

8 th grade students and gives your family the opportunity to see<br />

many of the wonderful sites around <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong> to learn about our rich local history.<br />

Interested students will visit various places around the county in order to receive the<br />

Celebrating America Summer Adventure Award. Packets and further information will be<br />

available through <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong> Department of Recreation & Parks, local libraries, <strong>Carroll</strong><br />

<strong>County</strong> <strong>Government</strong> Offices, the Visitor Center and the public schools in early May 2013.<br />

Celebrating America is a history initiative created by the Board of <strong>County</strong> Commissioners to<br />

promote a greater understanding of American history and historically significant people,<br />

the magical world of ‘Art Destination’ where you can experience<br />

art in a fun and creative way. Use many mediums such as<br />

clay‐regular and polymer, wood items to build or paint, and<br />

much, much more. Create works of art with watercolors, acrylics,<br />

oil pastels, and chalk. Use a variety of materials too many to list<br />

and experiment to create your own fantastic artistic world.<br />

Every week a new approach and/or technique is introduced with<br />

SPECIAL OLYMPICS CARROLL COUNTY (SOCR)<br />

Special Olympics (SO) provides year-round sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Athletes must have a current<br />

Special Olympics medical form, and must be 7 years old to train and 8 to compete. Special Olympics also provides the Young<br />

Athletes program serving children from age 2-7 years which promotes the development of gross motor skills. For additional<br />

2013 Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games will be held June 8-9 at Towson University.<br />

GOLF<br />

One of the fastest growing sports in SO, literally taking off since the<br />

late 1990’s. There are over 8,000 athletes competing each year. As<br />

the number continues to rise nationally, so too does it locally.<br />

<strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong> yields a large golf group each summer, with practices<br />

taking place on Saturdays at Piney Branch Golf Club, 4-5pm starting<br />

on June 22. In case of Heat Advisory, a message will be sent via<br />

email the morning of to confirm practice. Coach: Dan Rosenberg<br />

KAYAKING<br />

Available for up to 18 athletes, this is a demanding sport with a<br />

limited number of kayaks available. Athletes will benefit by being in<br />

good physical condition to compete successfully and safely, and<br />

should be able to swim. Through proper training, our athletes<br />

improve their physical, psychological and mental efficiency, while<br />

having a good time. Practices are held at Piney Run Park in<br />

Sykesville on Saturdays for the following schedule: 12:30-3pm on<br />

6/1, 6/15, and 9:30am-12pm on 6/22, 7/6, & 7/13 (times are subject<br />

to change). Additional events include Qualifier 6/29, Training &<br />

Picnic 7/20, and PA SO Visit on 7/27. All equipment along with park<br />

admission is provided free of charge.<br />

YOUNG ATHLETES<br />

A unique sport and play program where the focus is on fun activities<br />

that are important to mental and physical growth with an early introduction<br />

to sports and the world of SO. Children will enjoy games<br />

and activities that develop motor skills and hand-eye coordination.<br />

Learn new things, play and have lots of fun! Parents says it is a<br />

great way for their children to develop better social skills. The confidence<br />

boost will help to make it easier for them to play and talk with<br />

other children on the playground and elsewhere. Age: 2-1/2 to 7.<br />

SAVE THE DATE - - -<br />

SOCCER<br />

Considered the world’s most popular sport for children and adults<br />

around the world, and for SO athletes. Improve your overall<br />

physical fitness through training and competition. Saturdays,<br />

Aug 18-Oct 19, 2013, 9am-10:30am, location T/B/D. State Games<br />

(Fallfest) are 10/20/13. Contact: SOCR. NOTE: We are looking for<br />

a skills coach for this program.<br />

POWER LIFTING<br />

Much more than the deadlift or bench press, it is effort, persistence<br />

and loyalty. Training, determination and attitude are the key factors<br />

that define the balance between a successful or a failed attempt.<br />

Athletes will train at least one time per week beginning in late<br />

August, competing in qualifying tournaments. All eligible SO athletes<br />

age 16 and older are welcome, at all ability levels. Time and<br />

location of practice sessions T/B/D.<br />

CYCLING<br />

Cycling is an exciting sporting event that tones muscles and<br />

strengthens the cardiovascular system. SO offers events from 500<br />

meter time trials to 40K road races. SO athletes also can participate<br />

in Unified Sports Cycling events-a program that combines SO<br />

athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities (partners) on<br />

sports teams for training and competition. In Unified Sports Cycling,<br />

a tandem team consists of one SO athlete and one partner—the<br />

athlete or the partner may assume either the driver position (front) or<br />

the stoker position (rear) on the tandem. Location, dates/times<br />

T/B/D. A coach is needed for this program.<br />

Hashawha and Bear Branch Nature Center are located just north<br />

of Westminster, off Rt. 97 at 300 John Owings Road. The<br />

Nature Center is open year round. Hours of operation are<br />

Wednesday-Saturday 11am-5pm, and Sunday 12pm-5pm. All<br />

Nature Center programs require pre-registration with Recreation<br />

& Parks, (unless otherwise noted)-see form in back. Groups<br />

MUST schedule programs directly with the Nature Center; phone<br />

or email bearbranch@ccg.carr.org.<br />

Hashawha’s trails are open to the public from dawn until dusk<br />

365 days a year. Parking is only available at Lake Hashawha or<br />

Bear Branch Nature Center. There is no entrance fee for the<br />

park.<br />

PLEASE NOTE: The Hashawha Environmental Facility is not<br />

open to the public except through reservation. Please do not<br />

enter the Hashawha gates or the posted restricted areas. For<br />

more information about group rentals of the facility, phone<br />

Adopt a Critter<br />

The Nature Center’s live animal collection<br />

requires constant care. Animals in need of<br />

sponsors include birds of prey, snakes, and turtles.<br />

Support the critters or you can even sponsor a<br />

particular animal.<br />

Birthday Parties<br />

Looking for a wild time on your birthday? Nature<br />

Center birthdays include the use of the Yurt and<br />

a 45-minute naturalist-led program. Fee is $150;<br />

set-up and clean-up are the responsibility of the<br />

In case of inclement weather… if snow/icy conditions or<br />

Park and Nature Center are also closed. If <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

Schools are closed, delayed, or dismissed early, Nature<br />

Center programs that fall during those time periods are<br />

Recreation & Parks programs in the back of this brochure).<br />

Nature Center Membership: The Nature Center offers<br />

memberships to help support its activities. Newsletters and<br />

To participate, you must be able to swim. Previous kayaking experience is recommended but not mandatory - for children<br />

under the age of 18, parental consent and waiver is required. A short lesson/demonstration on kayaking skills and kayaking safety will be<br />

provided. Bring a hat and sunglasses, try to avoid cotton clothes. Nylon, polyester and wool work much better on the water. Your feet WILL get<br />

wet, please bring water shoes or old tennis shoes and a change of socks. Binoculars and a water bottle are highly recommended.<br />

<strong>Carroll</strong> Carvers 22nd Annual Fesval of Carving will be held Saturday, April 13 th at the Robert Moton Center, 300 S.<br />

Center Street in Westminster. The show is open to the public at 10am; admission is $3, children under 16 free when accompanied<br />

The show features all types of wood carving from regional carvers. There will be carving compeon, carving demos, door prizes<br />

and informaon about the club. Come and see top area carvers and learn how you can get involved in this great art. Tables are<br />

available on a limited basis to woodcarvers wishing to demonstrate and sell their carvings.<br />

year the Mudrun travels to a new<br />

location. The race will start at the<br />

<strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong> Sports Complex<br />

leading runners onto the challenging<br />

terrain of Hashawha. Onerous<br />

obstacles, tricky terrain and plenty<br />

of mud awaits you on this 5-6K<br />

adventure run. Enter as an individual,<br />

team of 2, or team of 4 –<br />

costumed or non-costumed. Costumes<br />

are encouraged and prizes<br />

are awarded for the best costume<br />

in the lower left hand corner and view the pdf, or click<br />

“Online <strong>Program</strong> Registration and Payment,” add your<br />

program(s) to your cart, and follow the directions on the<br />

screen. Payment must be made at the time of registration<br />

- VISA and MASTERCARD accepted. All online<br />

registrations are processed immediately and a payment<br />

confirmation is sent to your e-mail address.<br />

Registrations of all types (phone, mail, in person and<br />

online) are processed in the order in which we receive<br />

accurately completed forms and correct fees.<br />

EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT*: Sign up early and save! A<br />

discount of $5 is available for course registrations (*only<br />

where applicable) postmarked, hand delivered or registered<br />

online by May 15, 2013 OR one day prior to start date of the<br />

program, whichever comes first. *Please note the exceptions<br />

printed with each course or program section.<br />

SENIOR DISCOUNT*: <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong> citizens who are 60<br />

years of age or older are permitted to take a 20% discount on<br />

course registration fees (*only where applicable) if they are<br />

the participant of the course. *Please note the exceptions<br />

printed with each course description or program section.<br />

*You may take either the Senior or the Early Bird<br />

discount, but not both. Not offered for Bus Trips, Nature<br />

Centers, Farm Museum & Therapeutic Recreation programs.<br />

SENIORS IN ACTION MEMBER DISCOUNTS: Discounted<br />

fees are offered for some bus trips for members only<br />

- you MUST call in to register to take advantage of these discounts<br />

or if you would like to join SIA - only $10 annual fee!<br />

REFUND POLICY<br />

Classes: Requests for full refunds must be received by<br />

phone at our office at least 10 days prior to the starting date<br />

of the course. Session refunds may be given for withdrawal<br />

requests made after that date at the discretion of Recreation<br />

and Parks. No refunds will be issued after two sessions. No<br />

refunds will be issued for courses meeting only one or two<br />

sessions. Students with consistent discipline problems will<br />

be dropped from class without a refund.<br />

Bus Trips: Requests for full refunds must be received by<br />

phone/in person at least one month prior to the date of the trip<br />

unless there is a specific date listed in the course description.<br />

After the deadline has passed, there will be NO refunds and<br />

any tickets purchased are the property of the registrant.<br />

CANCELLATION POLICY: <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

Recreation and Parks reserves the right to cancel any course<br />

at its discretion. In case of cancelation, a full refund will be<br />

given within 10-14 business days.<br />

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY: When <strong>Carroll</strong><br />

<strong>County</strong> Public Schools are closed or close early due to<br />

weather or other emergency conditions, <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

Recreation & Parks programs are canceled for that day. For<br />

weekend/non-school days, once the Snow Emergency Plan<br />

is in effect for <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong>, no Recreation & Parks<br />

activities take place that day. You can visit their website:<br />

www.chart.state.md.us/StormInfo/snow_emergency_plans.asp.<br />

Should the “Plan” be lifted any time during that day, all<br />

activities are still canceled for the remainder of that day.<br />

<strong>Program</strong> registrants will be contacted once make-up dates<br />

are established.<br />

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong> Recreation<br />

and Parks can provide limited financial assistance to families<br />

or individuals of <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong> who qualify, based on<br />

income level. Please call our office at 410-386-2103 for<br />

more information and to apply.<br />

SMOKING POLICY: Smoking is not allowed in any<br />

county or school building.<br />

CELL PHONES: As a courtesy to other participants, we<br />

respectfully request that program registrants make every<br />

effort not to use their cell phones during classroom<br />

instruction, while riding on buses, participating in guided<br />

tours, etc.<br />
