Community Pond 

Meet at the park, ind a view you like, and paint! It is delightful to paint outside 

‐ “plein air” as it is called. One can learn so much by looking intently at a land‐ 

scape and capturing it on paper. Learn techniques of painting and the fun of 

composition. Decide between acrylics, watercolors, or oils. Fun for all, you can 

even come as a family. A material fee of either $8 for acrylics or watercolors, or 

$20 for oils or just bring your own is due to instructor at beginning of irst 

class. Be sure to designate when registering so supplies will be made available

Have you ever tried painting pottery before—think it might be too hard 

to try? Or, have you completed many pieces but maybe they aren’t 

exactly what you had hoped for? Come to a pottery painting studio and 

feel comfortable about the choices you make! We want you to love your 

bisque whether you are a beginner or novice. Sometimes everyone gets 

a little stuck and needs a bit more advice to inish their piece and make it 

special. Learn everything from how many and what kinds of brushes to 

choose, to what colors will make your project bright and beautiful. We 

will provide you the one‐on‐one coaching to make that happen‐let’s have

personal watercraft safety. In order to operate a motor boat or personal

chart reading, course plotting, marlinspike knot tying. Age: all under 13

fun! Recognizing that we are all “works in progress” and that 

women in particular tend to make sure other things or other 

people progress before themselves, we have created a fun group 

to provide time for friendship, support, activity, and new experiences while 

encouraging the growth of each individual into a better, more enhanced 

woman. Come alone or grab a girlfriend and take time to enjoy, and even

Celebrating America 

Summer Adventure Program 

This “super summer passport” program is designed for 1 st through 

8 th grade students and gives your family the opportunity to see 

many of the wonderful sites around Carroll County to learn about our rich local history. 

Interested students will visit various places around the county in order to receive the 

Celebrating America Summer Adventure Award. Packets and further information will be 

available through Carroll County Department of Recreation & Parks, local libraries, Carroll 

County Government Offices, the Visitor Center and the public schools in early May 2013. 

Celebrating America is a history initiative created by the Board of County Commissioners to 

promote a greater understanding of American history and historically significant people, 

events, and places, particularly those within Carroll County. For more information, please visit

A camp that is like having an art store at your ingertips! Come to 

the magical world of ‘Art Destination’ where you can experience 

art in a fun and creative way. Use many mediums such as 

clay‐regular and polymer, wood items to build or paint, and 

much, much more. Create works of art with watercolors, acrylics, 

oil pastels, and chalk. Use a variety of materials too many to list 

and experiment to create your own fantastic artistic world. 

Every week a new approach and/or technique is introduced with 

new ideas for this year’s camps! So take it one week or all 

summer, and never make the same thing twice! No early drop‐off 

or late pick‐up without additional fees applying. Before/ 

aftercare is available at the facility for an additional fee‐must 

contact the facility directly to arrange. A $35 material fee is due

Work with paint and ink, color shapes and 

designs to create your own dynamic compositions. Try out new 

ways of painting and drawing, making large richly colored 

paintings, and “drawing” with brush and ink. Make color 

compositions using brightly colored paper shapes and cut out im‐ 

ages and patterns. Make crazy bird marionettes and construct 

outrageous bugs or dazzling butterlies of 

your own design using odds and ends, corks, 

paper fasteners, pieces of fake fur, sequins, you name it! 

There will be lots of creative fun; everyone’s work will be

SPECIAL OLYMPICS CARROLL COUNTY (SOCR) 

Special Olympics (SO) provides year-round sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Athletes must have a current 

Special Olympics medical form, and must be 7 years old to train and 8 to compete. Special Olympics also provides the Young 

Athletes program serving children from age 2-7 years which promotes the development of gross motor skills. For additional

2013 Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games will be held June 8-9 at Towson University. 

GOLF 

One of the fastest growing sports in SO, literally taking off since the 

late 1990’s. There are over 8,000 athletes competing each year. As 

the number continues to rise nationally, so too does it locally. 

Carroll County yields a large golf group each summer, with practices 

taking place on Saturdays at Piney Branch Golf Club, 4-5pm starting 

on June 22. In case of Heat Advisory, a message will be sent via 

email the morning of to confirm practice. Coach: Dan Rosenberg 

KAYAKING 

Available for up to 18 athletes, this is a demanding sport with a 

limited number of kayaks available. Athletes will benefit by being in 

good physical condition to compete successfully and safely, and 

should be able to swim. Through proper training, our athletes 

improve their physical, psychological and mental efficiency, while 

having a good time. Practices are held at Piney Run Park in 

Sykesville on Saturdays for the following schedule: 12:30-3pm on 

6/1, 6/15, and 9:30am-12pm on 6/22, 7/6, & 7/13 (times are subject 

to change). Additional events include Qualifier 6/29, Training & 

Picnic 7/20, and PA SO Visit on 7/27. All equipment along with park 

admission is provided free of charge. 

YOUNG ATHLETES 

A unique sport and play program where the focus is on fun activities 

that are important to mental and physical growth with an early introduction 

to sports and the world of SO. Children will enjoy games 

and activities that develop motor skills and hand-eye coordination. 

Learn new things, play and have lots of fun! Parents says it is a 

great way for their children to develop better social skills. The confidence 

boost will help to make it easier for them to play and talk with 

other children on the playground and elsewhere. Age: 2-1/2 to 7.

SOCCER 

Considered the world’s most popular sport for children and adults 

around the world, and for SO athletes. Improve your overall 

physical fitness through training and competition. Saturdays, 

Aug 18-Oct 19, 2013, 9am-10:30am, location T/B/D. State Games 

(Fallfest) are 10/20/13. Contact: SOCR. NOTE: We are looking for 

a skills coach for this program. 

POWER LIFTING 

Much more than the deadlift or bench press, it is effort, persistence 

and loyalty. Training, determination and attitude are the key factors 

that define the balance between a successful or a failed attempt. 

Athletes will train at least one time per week beginning in late 

August, competing in qualifying tournaments. All eligible SO athletes 

age 16 and older are welcome, at all ability levels. Time and 

location of practice sessions T/B/D. 

CYCLING 

Cycling is an exciting sporting event that tones muscles and 

strengthens the cardiovascular system. SO offers events from 500 

meter time trials to 40K road races. SO athletes also can participate 

in Unified Sports Cycling events-a program that combines SO 

athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities (partners) on 

sports teams for training and competition. In Unified Sports Cycling, 

a tandem team consists of one SO athlete and one partner—the 

athlete or the partner may assume either the driver position (front) or 

the stoker position (rear) on the tandem. Location, dates/times 

T/B/D. A coach is needed for this program.

Hashawha and Bear Branch Nature Center are located just north 

of Westminster, off Rt. 97 at 300 John Owings Road. The 

Nature Center is open year round. Hours of operation are 

Wednesday-Saturday 11am-5pm, and Sunday 12pm-5pm. All 

Nature Center programs require pre-registration with Recreation 

& Parks, (unless otherwise noted)-see form in back. Groups 

MUST schedule programs directly with the Nature Center; phone 

or email bearbranch@ccg.carr.org. 

Hashawha’s trails are open to the public from dawn until dusk 

365 days a year. Parking is only available at Lake Hashawha or 

Bear Branch Nature Center. There is no entrance fee for the 

park. 

PLEASE NOTE: The Hashawha Environmental Facility is not 

open to the public except through reservation. Please do not 

enter the Hashawha gates or the posted restricted areas. For 

more information about group rentals of the facility, phone

In case of inclement weather… should inclement weather be in 

the forecast, please call the Nature Center before coming to your

Join as we head to Jug Bay on the Patuxent River to spend the day 

learning all about the “fish hawk” with Naturalist, Greg Kearns who 

has banded osprey chicks each spring in the Chesapeake region for 

over 20 years. During this incredible trip, you will have the chance 

to get up close and personal with these birds, as well as help collect 

and record important banding data. Bring water, hat/sunglasses, 

sunscreen, and a camera. Fee includes transportation from Bear 

Branch Nature Center, admission, boat tour and riverside picnic

Adopt a Critter 

The Nature Center’s live animal collection 

requires constant care. Animals in need of 

sponsors include birds of prey, snakes, and turtles. 

Support the critters or you can even sponsor a 

particular animal. 

Birthday Parties 

Looking for a wild time on your birthday? Nature 

Center birthdays include the use of the Yurt and 

a 45-minute naturalist-led program. Fee is $150; 

set-up and clean-up are the responsibility of the 

scheduling parent. 

Environmental Education Classes 

and Field Trips

and home-school groups are welcome. Programs 

can be scheduled as Nature Center field trips or to 

have a naturalist come to your school. Fees: $3/ 

person for Carroll County groups (a $25 minimum

gates are open 7 days a week from 7am until sunset. 

Entrance fees are collected at the Gatehouse upon arrival

all others). Season Vehicle Passes are available from the 

Park Office and Gatehouse for $40/vehicle for Carroll 

County residents; $55/vehicle for all others. *Please note 

vehicle entrance fees are waived for Nature Center programs

The Nature Center way! Using baby food jars,

provided. Bring a hat and sunglasses, try to avoid cotton clothes. Nylon, polyester and wool work much better on the water. Your feet WILL get

Carroll Carvers 22nd Annual Fesval of Carving will be held Saturday, April 13 th at the Robert Moton Center, 300 S. 

Center Street in Westminster. The show is open to the public at 10am; admission is $3, children under 16 free when accompanied 

by an adult. 

The show features all types of wood carving from regional carvers. There will be carving compeon, carving demos, door prizes 

and informaon about the club. Come and see top area carvers and learn how you can get involved in this great art. Tables are 

available on a limited basis to woodcarvers wishing to demonstrate and sell their carvings.

are available for rent! 

Carroll County Recreation & Parks schedules pavilion rentals at park sites located throughout the county. To reserve a pavilion, please contact the Department 

at 410-386-2103 or send an email to ccrec@ccg.carr.org. All facilities are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. The cost is $75 to reserve a pavilion.

Double Pipe Creek Park - fishing and boating in creek, playground, 

free play area, basketball 1/2 court

Mudrun 2013

Muddy mayhem is back by popular 

demand! Don’t miss this unique 

event. First-timers to seasoned 

athletes and adventure racers, this 

run is sure to challenge you. This 

year the Mudrun travels to a new 

location. The race will start at the 

Carroll County Sports Complex 

leading runners onto the challenging 

terrain of Hashawha. Onerous 

obstacles, tricky terrain and plenty 

of mud awaits you on this 5-6K 

adventure run. Enter as an individual, 

team of 2, or team of 4 – 

costumed or non-costumed. Costumes 

are encouraged and prizes 

are awarded for the best costume 

is each category. 

Cash prizes for the first male and 

female finisher, first place 

2-person team, and first place 

4-person team. Place medals and 

finishers medals awarded. Registration 

opens soon so start rallying 

your teammates, planning your 

costume, and encouraging your 

friends and neighbors to 

register. Remember, all proceeds 

from this event support the Carroll 

County Park Legacy Fund which 

raises money for park and trail 

related projects in Carroll County, 

MD.

Muddies Run for our younger adventure 

runners.

HOW TO REGISTER: 

Mail it in / Phone it in: Complete the registration 

form in this booklet and mail it in along with your check 

payment (payable to Carroll County Commissioners) 

to the address noted on the bottom of the form (please 

NO cash or credit card payments via mail). Please provide 

all information requested on the form to ensure 

prompt processing. 

For your convenience, you may call us Monday-Friday, 

8:15am-4:45pm, at 410-386-2103, to register and pay by 

credit card (VISA and MASTERCARD). 

Walk it in: For your convenience, you may register in 

person with payment (cash, check, credit) at the office 

of Carroll County Recreation and Parks located in the 

Robert Moton Center, 300 South Center Street, Westminster. 

Registrations will be accepted Monday-Friday, 

8:15am-4:45pm. 

Register Online: View this program guide online at 

ccrecpark.org. Click on the program guide icon located 

in the lower left hand corner and view the pdf, or click 

“Online Program Registration and Payment,” add your 

program(s) to your cart, and follow the directions on the 

screen. Payment must be made at the time of registration 

- VISA and MASTERCARD accepted. All online 

registrations are processed immediately and a payment 

confirmation is sent to your e-mail address. 

Registrations of all types (phone, mail, in person and 

online) are processed in the order in which we receive 

accurately completed forms and correct fees. 

EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT*: Sign up early and save! A 

discount of $5 is available for course registrations (*only 

where applicable) postmarked, hand delivered or registered 

online by May 15, 2013 OR one day prior to start date of the 

program, whichever comes first. *Please note the exceptions 

printed with each course or program section. 

SENIOR DISCOUNT*: Carroll County citizens who are 60 

years of age or older are permitted to take a 20% discount on 

course registration fees (*only where applicable) if they are 

the participant of the course. *Please note the exceptions 

printed with each course description or program section. 

*You may take either the Senior or the Early Bird 

discount, but not both. Not offered for Bus Trips, Nature 

Centers, Farm Museum & Therapeutic Recreation programs. 

SENIORS IN ACTION MEMBER DISCOUNTS: Discounted 

fees are offered for some bus trips for members only 

- you MUST call in to register to take advantage of these discounts 

or if you would like to join SIA - only $10 annual fee!

REFUND POLICY 

Classes: Requests for full refunds must be received by 

phone at our office at least 10 days prior to the starting date 

of the course. Session refunds may be given for withdrawal 

requests made after that date at the discretion of Recreation 

and Parks. No refunds will be issued after two sessions. No 

refunds will be issued for courses meeting only one or two 

sessions. Students with consistent discipline problems will 

be dropped from class without a refund. 

Bus Trips: Requests for full refunds must be received by 

phone/in person at least one month prior to the date of the trip 

unless there is a specific date listed in the course description. 

After the deadline has passed, there will be NO refunds and 

any tickets purchased are the property of the registrant. 

CANCELLATION POLICY: Carroll County 

Recreation and Parks reserves the right to cancel any course 

at its discretion. In case of cancelation, a full refund will be 

given within 10-14 business days. 

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY: When Carroll 

County Public Schools are closed or close early due to 

weather or other emergency conditions, Carroll County 

Recreation & Parks programs are canceled for that day. For 

weekend/non-school days, once the Snow Emergency Plan 

is in effect for Carroll County, no Recreation & Parks 

activities take place that day. You can visit their website: 

www.chart.state.md.us/StormInfo/snow_emergency_plans.asp. 

Should the “Plan” be lifted any time during that day, all 

activities are still canceled for the remainder of that day. 

Program registrants will be contacted once make-up dates 

are established. 

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Carroll County Recreation 

and Parks can provide limited financial assistance to families 

or individuals of Carroll County who qualify, based on 

income level. Please call our office at 410-386-2103 for 

more information and to apply. 

SMOKING POLICY: Smoking is not allowed in any 

county or school building. 

CELL PHONES: As a courtesy to other participants, we 

respectfully request that program registrants make every 

effort not to use their cell phones during classroom 

instruction, while riding on buses, participating in guided 

tours, etc.
