"X Disease" Identified
N
EW cattle disease, brought to
public attention during the summer,
was first reported by Drs. Peter
Olafson '26, head of Pathology and
Bacteriology; and Myron G. Fincher
'20, Professor of Veterinary Medicine
and head of the Department. The report
was made at a Veterinarians'
Conference held on the Campus in
January, 1942.
Known as "X disease" when it first
appeared in 1941, the malady is now
designated "Hyperkeratosis" because
of a skin thickening around neck and
shoulders which is one of its symptoms.
Affecting both dairy and beef
cattle, the new disease is considered a
potential danger to national milk and
meat supplies, though outbreaks have
been only sporadic to date.
A recent survey conducted in five
states by the U. S. Bureau of Animal
Industry indicates that fifty-nine
per cent of infected cattle die from the
ailment, but there is no evidence that
the disease is spread by contact or
other means. Cause and effective
treatment are being investigated here.
Foreign Women Here
Λ MERICAN Home Economics As-
•*"*• sociation Scholarships of $400
have helped bring two graduate
women to the University this year
from almost opposite ends of the
earth. Susan V. Holmes of Wellington,
New Zealand, is here for a year's
study of the public health aspects of
nutrition and Mrs. Francine Van de
Putte Gilles of Brussels, Belgium, is
studying child training in the College
of Home Economics.
Mrs. Gilles, whose husband is
also studying in the United States
this year, when she was twenty,
during the war, organized and managed
single-handed a home for sixty
children of Trooz, Belgium, whose
parents were war casualties or prisoners.
She evacuated her charges to
Brussels, and by her calmness and
initiative is reported to have prevented
panic in Trooz when the town
was being severely bombed. After
her year at Cornell, she will return
to Belgium to take charge of government
training of home-maker's helpers
to assist hard-pressed farm families.
Miss Holmes, who also holds a
School of Nutrition scholarship, graduated
at Otago University in New
Zealand during the war and came to
America from England where she had
been studying dietetics and working
as a public health nutritionist. She
intends to continue work in that field
after her year here.
Tenth and largest scholarship fund
raised by the State Federation of
192
Home Bureaus for grants to students
in Home Economics preparing for
work in the Extension Service is the
sum of $5,000 for an Eliza Keats
Young Scholarship. It is named for
the third president of the Federation,
who lives in Milton.
Additional gifts of $1,000 this year
will start a fund to support Eliza
Keats Young Fellowships for foreign
women who come to the College for
short periods. First to receive this
Fellowship is Nancelle C. Cossus,
from France, who came in November
for three months as part of her study
of home economics education and
extension work in the United States.
She also has a grant from the Milbank
Foundation.
