Butler County Visions of Well- 

Being (VOW) is again requesting 

donations for the 2011 Butler County 

Back to School Project. 

The Back to School Project 

provides families in need with 

assistance to obtain necessary school 

supplies for their children. In 2010, 

VOW assisted over 150 students 

throughout the county. 

A contribution of $25.00 covers 

the cost of the necessary supplies 

to begin the school year for one 

student. Sponsorship of more than 

one student is always welcome. 

In these difficult economic times, 

please consider keeping your 

charitable giving local so that Butler 

County can continue to be a great

spring semester 

Dean’s List 

More than 5,240 Iowa State 

University undergraduates have been 

recognized for outstanding academic 

achievement by being named to the 

2011 spring semester Dean’s List. 

Students named to the Dean’s List 

must have earned a grade point 

average of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 

scale while carrying a minimum of 

12 credit hours of graded course 

work. 

Students who qualified for the 

Dean’s List are: 

Clarksville: Adam W. Campbell;

Do you know what year the Butler 

County Fair started the scramble calf 

event? Do you know who caught 

the first scramble calf that the Butler 

County Farm Bureau sponsored? 

Don’t feel bad because you aren’t 

the only one that doesn’t know the 

answers to these questions. 

The first year the scramble calf 

event was held was in 1963 and 

Mike Codner from Bristow was 

the kid that year that caught the 

first scramble calf sponsored by the 

Butler County Farm Bureau. 

Mike’s son, Craig Codner, was the 

second one in the Codner family to 

catch fair scramble calves. Craig 

caught a calf in 1987 and then 

another one in 1988. Dorothy 

Codner remembers that back when 

her kids were catching scramble 

calves, the rule was when Craig 

caught a calf then he was not eligible 

to participate in the follow year’s 

scramble competition. 

Dorothy commented, “You had to 

sit it out the year you got to show 

your scramble calf at the fair. Craig 

only got to catch two calves in a row 

because there weren’t enough kids 

signed up to catch calves in 1988 so 

they changed the two year rule”. 

Craig Codner’s sons, Cody and 

Brady, have both caught Butler 

County Farm Bureau sponsored 

calves at the Butler County Fair. 

Cody caught a calf in 2007 and 

Brady caught his in 2010. Brady 

Codner will again be showing his 

scramble calf this year at the 2011 

Butler County Fair. 

With Mike Codner being the 

president of the Butler County 

Cattleman’s Association and the 

District 5 Director, you’ll be sure to 

see the Codners busy grilling at the 

2011 Butler County Fair June 22-26.
