Science Education Coursework Summary 2009-2010
Fall of Sophomore Year:
SCI 214 is offered in the fall semester. You must have completed 8 hours of
science and a computer course before taking this course. Ideally you would
enroll in this course the fall of your sophomore year. You may concurrently
enroll in EDC 150 and SEC 302.
Spring of Junior Year:
SCI 314 is offered in the spring semester. You must have completed a
course in each of the 4 science disciplines and SEC 302 before taking this
course. Ideally you would enroll in this course the spring of your junior year.
SCI 505 is offered in the spring semester. You must have 70 hours of credit
including at least 8 hours of science courses before taking this course.
Ideally you would enroll in this course in the spring of your junior year.
Fall of Senior Year:
SCI 414 is offered in the fall semester. Prerequisite courses: SCI 214 and
SCI 314; completion of 20 hours in the primary science field; minimum of
one required course in BIO, CHM, PHY, GLG or GRY;
EDC 350 or concurrent enrollment; RDG 474 is recommended. You should
enroll in this course during your senior year, immediately before student
teaching.
Spring of Senior Year:
SCI 493 and SCI 494 are the courses that you will take during your student
teaching semester.
PORTFOLIO:
During your SCI courses, you will be directed to compile a set of documents
that illustrate your competencies as a scientist and a teacher.
During your science courses (BIO, CHM, PHY, GRY/GLG), you must collect
and save assignments that demonstrate your ability to perform scientific
investigations. You must also save the documents so that your grade is
visible. Appropriate assignments include laboratory reports, homework
assignments, research papers, etc.
