shall obtain any of His knowledge, except as He wills. It says His throne extends over the skies and earth. This is not a big chair that sits over the universe. It is a metaphor indicating that His authority is over everything in the creation. And if it is a big chair, we can't see it anyway and we don't know what it's made out of, so it's a metaphor to us anyway. When we read the Qur'an, we must consider verses in the light of other verses, because Allah tells us that He does not contradict himself. So, He uses the emphatic Laa many times. However, in Sura 42:11, He uses the perfect tense verb Laysa to tell us that He is not like anything you try to invent as a comparison to Him. After so many uses of the emphatic Laa; Sura 3:2, 3:6, 3:64, and many more, there is no need to always use emphasis. It should be common sense or obvious to us by now. ARGUMENT 5 The Fifth and last point of his case does not revolve around mainstream Islamic concepts, but rather a case to his own brothers and sisters in the NOI. He attempts to reconcile the case he has made on behalf of the NOI; namely that prophet Muhammad believed that G-d was a man and claims to have seen Allah in person, and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad statement that Prophet Muhammad never saw G-d, he only heard Him. He tries to reconcile this by referring to a news article written in 1957 where the HEM states that all of the prophets saw G-d, but only in a vision. Dr. Wesley uses this news article as proof that he is not contradicting the HEM. According to Dr. Wesley, if prophet Muhammad saw Allah in a vision, then he saw Him, but He really actually didn't see Him, he just saw a vision of Him, but it was a true vision. In this way, Dr. Muhammad claims to reconcile his case that claims Prophet Muhammad saw Allah in the person of a man and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad's statement that Prophet Muhammad did not see Allah, but only heard his voice. Dr. Wesley's purported logic is, the prophet saw Allah as a man in a vision. The vision was a true vision and HEM said the prophet saw Allah in a vision, thus, my case agrees with the HEM. Yet, the prophet did not really, actually, physically see Allah in person, because it was a vision. Therefore, he is still consistent with the HEM's statement that the prophet never saw Allah. RESPONSE 5 This was an interesting way to conclude the lecture. Dr. Wesley spent two hours making a tremendous effort to prove to us that prophet Muhammad saw and felt the physical touch of Allah, as a man, not in a dream, but while he was awake and aware and then in the last 15 minutes of the presentation contradicts his entire case in order to avoid contradicting the Honorable Elijah Muhammad's statement that Prophet Muhammad did not see Allah. Dr. Wesley uses the 1957 news article which states that prophet Muhammad saw G-d in a vision (not in actual physical person), as proof that he is not contradicting the HEM's statement that prophet Muhammad did not actually see G-d, but saw a vision. Well, this contradicts Dr. Wesley's entire argument up to this point. Now, he appears to be conceding that Prophet Muhammad did not see Allah as a human being in the flesh. If this is Dr. Wesley's position, why spend two hours trying to prove that the prophet saw and touched 10
Allah, only to turn around and say, well no, he saw and touched him only in a vision? Dr. Wesley states that the vision was an accurate portrait of Allah, but how would he know this if it was only a vision? He has nothing to compare the vision with in the real world, because he didn't see the physical Allah in the real world. For example, if I asked you to see my cousin who lives in France in a vision, you could have a vision of what you think is him, but you wouldn't know it, because you never saw my cousin. However, if you had seen him and then had a vision of him, you could tell me with conviction that you saw him in a vision, because you know what he looks like. So, if Dr. Wesley accepts the HEM's position that the prophet never saw G-d, but only saw a vision of Gd, then perhaps he should have spent 2 hours trying to prove that the reports of the prophet's visions were true, not that the prophet actually saw and taught that Allah is a physical man. In this effort to not contradict the HEM, I believe Dr. Wesley contradicts a large part of his own case; namely, that prophet Muhammad's words prove that he saw Allah as a man. CONCLUDING ARGUMENT Dr. Wesley Muhammad concludes his case by saying to the Muslim world at large, which concept of Allah will you choose? The belief in Allah as eternal, who cannot be comprehended with the eye, who has no form or shape like anything in the material world or the belief in Allah as a man, who has a shape, is limited, is like the material world, and can be seen with the physical eye and heard with the physical ear? He concludes that those who don't believe in Allah as a man are the ones guilty of setting up partners with Allah (shirk) by making an invisible G-d, the G-d instead of the real Allah, who is a man. CONCLUDING RESPONSE Obviously, I disagree with Dr. Wesley Muhammad's viewpoint. Therefore, I conclude with a comment from my leader Imam W. Deen Mohammed and his leader the Holy Qur'an. Imam Mohammed has said, "You can't put Allah on a slide so that you can examine Him...that is foolishness. You can't even see everything in the creation, how are you going to see Allah, who is bigger than the creation?" The Imam said, "You claim to comprehend Allah and you haven't even analyzed yourself; you can't even comprehend everything about yourself." Each one of us has our own life and it is difficult to master. We don't even understand ourselves and the world we live in. Yet, we are going to define Allah and bring Him down to our level where we can see Him. Let me end with Allah's words: 40:57 "Assuredly the creation of the heavens and the earth is a greater (matter) than the creation of men: Yet most men understand not." 9:31 "They take their priests and their anchorites to be their lords in derogation of Allah, and (they take as their Lord) Christ the son of Mary; yet they were commanded to worship but One Allah. there is no god but He. Praise and glory to Him: (Far is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him)." 11
