The FIS is searching for an:<br />

Starting August 1, 2011, fulltime.<br />

Elementary and Middle <strong>School</strong> <strong>Counselor</strong><br />

The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, and five or more years of professional<br />

experience in counseling or related fields. A Master’s Degree in Counseling is required as well<br />

as a valid counseling and teaching certificate. The FIS is searching for a self-motivated team<br />

player who will be dedicated to <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> and its students.<br />

Duties and Responsibilities:<br />

Program planning<br />

• Organize <strong>the</strong> counseling program by assessing needs, setting goals, and formulating a<br />

plan of action and program evaluation<br />

• Identify student needs based on input from students, parents, teachers, and principals<br />

• Report to <strong>the</strong> school management and staff about <strong>the</strong> goals and services of <strong>the</strong><br />

counseling program<br />

Counseling<br />

• Conduct individual and group counseling with students experiencing personal, social,<br />

behavioral, or family problems, to meet students’ developmental, preventative, and<br />

remedial needs<br />

• Consult with parents, teachers, principals, and psychologists regarding student<br />

adjustment issues<br />

• Maintain communication with local agencies and assist students and parents in obtaining<br />

services in areas such as tutoring, <strong>the</strong>rapy, or child-advocacy assistance<br />

• As a part of <strong>the</strong> Student Support Services team, meet with team members and<br />

appropriate staff members on a regular basis<br />

• Respond to school crises and emergency situations as needed<br />

Student appraisal<br />

• Interpret achievement tests, student data and o<strong>the</strong>r assessments and discuss results<br />

with teachers and parents<br />

• <strong>Ad</strong>minister assessments for admissions processes and interview potential incoming<br />

students when appropriate<br />

• Help teachers and parents understand student test performance in relation to student<br />

development


• Provide behavioral suggestions to teachers and parents that are developmentally<br />

appropriate for students<br />

• Conduct non-standardized educational assessments according to professional practices<br />

(e.g. classroom observations) to help determine most appropriate services<br />

• Develop and implement student contracts for educational and behavioral goal-setting as<br />

needed<br />

• Coordinate standardized testing and results reporting in elementary and middle school<br />

Elementary and Middle <strong>School</strong> guidance<br />

• Coordinate student and parent education programs to assist students in making smooth<br />

transitions from elementary to middle and Middle to High <strong>School</strong><br />

• Design, deliver, evaluate, and revise a sequential and developmentally appropriate<br />

Elementary and Middle <strong>School</strong> counseling curriculum which will include academic<br />

development, career investigation, and citizenship development<br />

• Provide individual and small group counseling as needed<br />

• Inform parents of <strong>the</strong> program during <strong>the</strong> Elementary and Middle <strong>School</strong> information<br />

evening<br />

• Be visible by participating in a variety of activities that contribute to school life<br />

• Provide information and skills to parents, school staff, and principals to assist <strong>the</strong>m in<br />

helping students in all areas and stages of development<br />

• Assist parents in addressing school related problems; refer parents to outside agencies<br />

and specialists when necessary<br />

• Look for and participate in professional development opportunities<br />
