Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers Offers
$7,500 Reward in Northeast Iowa Livestock
Vandalism Cases
Sheriff’s departments in Bremer,
Chickasaw and Fayette counties say
state and local farm organizations
have announced a $7,500 reward for
information leading to the arrest and
conviction of the person or persons
involved in farm vandalism cases
spread over a nine day period in late
November.
The reward, offered by the Coalition
to Support Iowa’s Farmers
(CSIF) and others, will assist the
offices in the ongoing investigation
of incidents that occurred at multiple
farms in a three county area. In
most of the cases, office equipment
was damaged, windows were broken
out, liquids were poured onto the
floor, drains were plugged, and electrical
power was cut by a 12-gauge
shotgun used to take out electrical
transformers.
The sheriff’s departments involved
say the reward will assist investigators
as they move forward with the
case. They are hopeful that someone
with knowledge about what happened
will step forward and contact
one of their offices, and it is their intent
to see this investigation through
to a timely and successful outcome.
They would also like to remind farmers
to be vigilant in monitoring their
farms as well as their neighbor’s
farms. If you observe suspicious ac-
tivity, do not investigate it on your
own; call the sheriff’s department
immediately and report it.
Brian Waddingham, executive director
of the Coalition to Support Iowa’s
Farmers, says farmers strongly
condemn animal abuse and hopes
the reward will help resolve the case.
Iowa’s livestock farmers go to great
lengths to ensure the health, safety
and well-being of their livestock,
and when senseless acts like this occur
it becomes a concern for all of
those involved in agriculture.
The Coalition to Support Iowa’s
Farmers is a non-profit organization
that assists livestock farmers
who want help interpreting rules and
regulations, guidance on good site
locations for barns, counsel on enhancing
neighbor relations and tips
on how to protect the environment
at no cost. Farm families wanting a
helping hand can contact the Coalition
at 1-800-932-2436. For more
information about the Coalition visit
www.supportfarmers.com.
CSIF has offered nearly $25,000 in
rewards since its launch in 2004 to
help solve livestock vandalism cases
throughout the state. Anyone with
information in the case is encouraged
to contact their County Sheriff’s
Office.
Closing Credit Accounts
Closing old and unused credit
accounts on your credit reports can
help you avoid unnecessary fees
and guard against identity theft, but
it can also have a negative effect
on your credit score. It’s true that
having too many open accounts can
hurt your chances of getting a loan
because it will appear as though you
have access to too much credit. But
once you’ve opened the accounts,
you’ve done the damage. You can’t
repair it by shutting the account, and
you may actually make things worse.
The credit score looks at the
difference between your available
credit and what you’re using. Shut
down accounts, and your total
available credit shrinks, making
your balances loom larger, which
typically hurts your score. The score
also tracks the length of your credit
history. Shutting older accounts can
also make your credit history look
younger than it actually is, which
can hurt your score.
Of course, credit scores aren’t
the only thing lenders look at when
making decisions. They typically
consider other factors, such as your
income, assets, employment history
and credit limits. Mortgage lenders
in particular might look at your total
available credit and ask you to close
a few accounts as a condition for
getting a loan. But if your goal is
to improve your credit score, you
generally shouldn’t close accounts
in advance of such a request.
Instead, pay down your credit card
debt. That’s something that actually
can improve your score.
If your decision is to close some
of your open accounts, close those
that charge annual fees or that has
the highest interest rates first. By
checking your credit report, you can
see the status of your accounts. Look
for late payments, high balances and
signs of identity theft. The contact
information for each creditor will
also be listed on the report.
You can close accounts that have
an active balance. This may be a
good way for heavy credit users to
prevent new spending while they
are reducing their balances – but
watch for hidden fees. The safest
way to close an account is to send
a certified letter to the customer
service department of the credit
company. You should receive an
account closing confirmation letter
in 10 days.
Avoid over-consolidating balances
onto one card. If your credit balances
rise to above 35% of your available
limits, you may see a drop in your
credit score. Be sure to check your
credit reports for updates and errors
after you close your credit accounts.
Wait 30 – 60 days for the creditor
to report the closed account and the
credit reporting agencies to update
your records. The accounts and
their payment histories will stay on
your report for 7 or more years, but
should be marked as “closed”.
Iowa Power Farming Show
Continues to Impress
One of the longest running farm
shows in the country will hold its 56 th
annual show on February 1-3 at the
Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.
The Iowa Power Farming Show is
the fourth largest indoor farm show
in the United States covering over
260,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space.
The show continues to impress
attendees resulting in a record
attendance seven years in a row.
Attendance at the show has steadily
increased over the past decade. The
attendance in 2010 was 19,081.
“Each year we see more farmers
from surrounding states, particularly
Minnesota and Missouri. We believe
the success of the show is a direct
result of the number of farmers
attending,” says Tom Junge, Show
Director.
“The show will expand once again
with booths being added on the lower
level of the Hy-Vee Exhibit Hall. We
try to utilize every foot of exhibit
space as more companies want to
get into the show and the waiting list
expands,” says Junge. A total of 640
companies will utilize 1,660 booths.
The show covers 6.0 acres of indoor
space and has displays on six floors
in three buildings of the Iowa Events
Center.
There will be two seminar rooms
so farmers will have additional
educational opportunities. Seminars
begin at 10:45 a.m. each day. There
are three companies providing an
outlook on commodity prices and
marketing advice; and two firms
will discuss the transition of the
family farm. Calcium Products will
agronomists to discuss what it takes
to increase yields while decreasing
input costs. Other topics include
soybean weed management and
precision farming. New this year is a
presentation on the basics of internet
and rural internet options.
Admission to the Iowa Power
Farming Show is $6.00 (Children
under 14 are free.) Farmers can
save $3.00 when they register and
participate in the “2011 Planting
Intention Survey” conducted by
the show and AgriSource at www.
iowapowershow.com. Three buses
will be utilized to provide free
shuttle service from the Iowa Cubs-
Principal Park. Parking at Principal
Park is free.
The show will be held in the
Hy-Vee Exhibit Hall, Wells Fargo
Arena and Polk County Convention
Complex in Des Moines. Doors open
at 9 a.m. all three days and close at
4 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday,
and at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
The Iowa Power Farming Show
is sponsored in part by Farm Credit
Services of America, Ag Leader
Technology, Bayer CropScience,
Stine Seed, and the Stewart-Peterson
Group. The show is owned and
managed by the Iowa-Nebraska
(I-NEDA). I-NEDA represents over
400 agricultural, outdoor power
and industrial equipment dealers
3:06 a.m.: Medical call at the 200
block of w Traer St.
One of the Deputies was forced to
shoot Jenkins to stop the attack.
Jenkins is charged with Domestic
Abuse Assault – 2 nd Offense, Assault
on Peace Officer and Armed with
Intent. Cash only bonds have been
set for all three charges; $6,500 for
the Domestic Abuse Assault charge,
$9,000 for Assault on a Peace officer
and $9,000 for Armed with Intent.
A bond reduction hearing was held
on Thursday, Jan. 13 where Jenkins’
was represented by Robert Thompson.
Thompson urged the court to
reduce Jenkins’ bonds to something
other than cash only, and suggested
he be released on a pre-trial release,
allowing him to stay with friend,
Matt Bohner.
Greg Lievens represented the State
of Iowa and countered Thompson’s
statements by saying the bonds are
more than appropriate and should
remain the same. Lievens also felt
it unnecessary to allow Jenkins to
be released, as he is still a concern
for the safety of the victim as well
as others.
Judge Peter Newell agreed with
Lievens stating Jenkins does constitute
a danger to the community. All
bonds remain the same and pre-trial
release was denied.
CLARKSVILLE COMMUNITY SCHOOL
BOARD OF EDUCATION
Regular Meeting
January 17, 2011
The regular board meeting was called to
order by Pres. Kurt Wedeking at 5:00 p.m. in
the community room. Board members present
were Kurt Wedeking, Chris Backer, Sharon
Markussen, Justin Clark, and Rachelle Kelm;
others present were Supt. Robert Longmuir,
Sec. Shellee Bartlett, and Sec. Prin. Todd
Thompson, Elem. Prin. Linda Johnson, Bob
Bartlett, Scott & Dawn Capper, and Staci Miller.
Moved by Kelm, seconded by Backer, to
approve the consent agenda; (1) Minutes for
the December 13, 2010; (2) December financial
reports; (3) January monthly bills; (4) the
following personnel resignations/retirements:
Linda Johnson (elementary principal), Joyce
Hirsch (elementary secretary), and Pat
Fenneman (first grade teacher); personnel
appointments: Clint Hospodarsky, assistant
varsity baseball coach @ $2,188 (step 1, 8%);
Kayla Lodge, varsity softball @ $2,840 (step 2,
10%); Sarah Lodge, assistant varsity softball @
$2,188 (step 1, 8%). Carried unanimously.
Moved by Markussen, seconded by
Backer, to withdraw from the AEA 267 special
education pool agreement effective at the end
of fiscal year 2011 (June 30, 2011). Carried
unanimously. Mr. Longmuir again noted that
the special education program at Clarksville will
not change by withdrawing from the AEA pool
agreement – it is just that the program will be
totally administered by the Clarksville school
rather than being administered by AEA267.
Mrs. Dawn Capper requested the school
board support the Clarksville Academic
Eligibility policy as written in the student
handbook: after three full weeks following a
quarter, the student is passing the equivalent
class or is no longer in the class failed. She
stated the quarter ended December 22, 2010
and the full three weeks following the quarter
should end January 12, 2011. Mr. Longmuir and
Mr. Thompson stated it was clearly the intent
of the policy to begin the ineligibility period on
the first day of the next grading period which is
what happens this year at the end of the first,
third, and fourth quarter grading periods. Thus,
the students who may have become ineligible
at the end of the second quarter this year will
receive an advantage compared to students
who become ineligible at the end of the first,
third, and fourth quarters. Mr. Longmuir stated
this unique problem for the second quarter this
year was created when the school calendar
was changed to end the quarter and semester
before Christmas break this year, and the
wording was not amended in the student
handbook to accommodate this change in the
calendar. After much discussion, it was moved
by Kelm, seconded by Markussen, to allow the
three weeks of ineligibility to begin from the end
of the second quarter on December 22, 2010,
this year for all academically ineligible students.
Carried unanimously.
Moved by Clark, seconded by Backer, to
approve the 2009-10 school audit report as
presented. Carried unanimously. The school
audit reported was submitted by Bruce D. Frink,
Certified Public Accountant, and available
for review by the public. Mr. Longmuir noted
the audit was a “very clean” audit report and
commended Mrs. Bartlett and the administrative
staff in their efforts in this regard.
Mr. Longmuir reviewed the 2009-10 financial
audit on the Iowa Star Schools 28E Retention
Pool Health Insurance Trust prepared by
Nolte, Cornman, and Johnson P.C., Certified
Public Accountants. Clarksville is a member
of the Iowa Start Health Insurance Trust. The
audit shows that the trust is in sound financial
condition.
Moved by Backer, seconded by Clark, to
approve State of Iowa Retirement Investor’s
Club 403(b), Administrative Services Agreement
with the Iowa Department of Administrative
Services. Carried unanimously.
Moved by Kelm, seconded by Backer,
to approve a Good Conduct Code Ad Hoc
committee with the following membership: Board
Members - Chris Backer, Sharon Markussen;
Community Members - Rex Ackerman, Marilee
Gray, Georgene Johnson, Linda Wedeking;
Rep. - Dan Cummings, Mike Lammers;
Students - Tyler Kraft, Carissa Schellhorn;
Coaches/Sponsors - Klay Hoppenworth, Jill
Johnson, Wayne Slack; and Administrators
- Bob Longmuir, Todd Thompson. Carried
unanimously. The responsibilities of the ad hoc
committee will be to review the school district’s
conduct code as adopted on April 14, 2008 and
provide recommended revisions to the school
board by April 11, 2011.
Mr. Longmuir reviewed the minutes
from the December 6, 2010, School
Improvement Advisory Committee meeting.
Recommendations from the committee
included: separating the A and B honor roll in
the newspaper; full support for school district’s
infrastructure plans for the 2010-11 and 2011-
12 school years and encourage the school
board to proceed with the energy conservation
measures.
The Board discussed various facility
improvement projects and vehicle needs. The
Ford Windstar van will have approximately
150,000 miles by the end of the school year, but
needs over $1,000 in body work in order to pass
the next vehicle inspection. The Board asked
Mr. Longmuir to seek bid quotes for a new or
late model minivan or equivalent type vehicle.
The Board also reviewed a bid proposal from
an engineering firm to replace the boiler system
and installation of variable speed pumps as
recommended by our recent energy audit.
The Board asked Mr. Longmuir to secure
another bid quote from another engineering/
architectural firm for this particular project.
With the retirement of Mr. Longmuir and
now the retirement of Mrs. Linda Johnson as
elementary principal, the Board decided the
best method of replacing these positions is to
combine the positions of superintendent and
elementary principal which is not uncommon
in small school districts in the state. This will
effectively allow Clarksville to reduce our
administrative staff from 2.5 full-time equivalent
positions to 2.0 full-time equivalent positions.
In addition, the Board reviewed proposals
from Dr. Dean Meier (previous AEA267 chief
administrator) and McPearson & Jacobson,
L.L.C. (Omaha, Nebraska) to guide the
search process for the Board in hiring a new
superintendent/elementary principal. Moved by
Kelm, seconded by Backer, to contract with Dr.
Dean Meier for a superintendent/elementary
principal focused search at a fee of $1,500 plus
mileage and other expenses.
Mr. Longmuir gave a brief update on the main
legislative issues which included: projected
allowable growth rate for the 2011-12 fiscal
year, the possibility of eliminating pre-school
funding; eliminating the Iowa Core Curriculum;
and, reducing AEA spending by $10 million.
Elementary
• Iowa Tests of Basic Skills will begin on
January 18 for students in second through fifth
grades.
• The January 17, 2011, in-service day that
will be rescheduled due to inclement weather
will focus on PBIS and Iowa Core Curriculum
alignment.
Secondary
• Attendance for the first semester
averaged 95.12% for middle and high school
students - the school’s goal is to average 95%.
• Alternative school has three students
enrolled and making progress.
SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
• Mr. Longmuir has begun working on a
preliminary 2011-12 school calendar. The CEA
executive officers along with the administration
will be reviewing and making changes to the
calendar.
• Clarksville will host the sectional wrestling
tournament on February 5.
• The school will be recognizing the
Kampman family Friday night for their donation
of the flags in the East gym.
Moved by Kelm, seconded by Clark, to
adjourn at 7:52 p.m. Carried unanimously.
Closed session for negotiations strategy.
The tentative date for the February board
meeting is February 17, 2011, at 5:00 p.m. in
the community room.
structure of the superintendent/elementary
principal. Dr. Meier along with the board
determined a job vacancy ad and when and
where to advertise the position. The board
Department on Aging Reminds Iowans
Medicare Gives Opportunity to Assess
Health Before Problems Arise
A Good Start to a Healthy Future
is a Physical Exam
Today Iowa Department on Aging
(IDA) Director Donna Harvey
reminded Iowans that if they are
new to Medicare, they should take
charge of their health by getting the
“Welcome to Medicare” physical
exam now available.
New this year, Medicare will cover
a one-time “Welcome to Medicare”
physical exam for free for those new
to Medicare.
“This is wonderful news to those
covered by Medicare for the first
time. This comprehensive exam
can help spot small problems before
they become big problems, and can
help Medicare recipients take charge
of their healthcare by going in for a
complete exam and knowing where
they may need to improve their
health and well being.” Director
Harvey stated.
The “Welcome to Medicare”
physical exam includes the
following:
• A review of medical and
social history including risk factors
the recipient can change
• A physical exam that
includes measuring your height,
weight, blood pressure, visual acuity
screen, and body mass index
• Education, counseling,
and referrals based on the results of
your physical exam
• A brief written plan, such
as a checklist, for getting appropriate
screening and/or other Medicare
Part B preventive services
• A review of your potential
risk factors for depression
• End of life planning if
wanted
Harvey continued, “Thanks to the
new healthcare law, Medicare also
covers a yearly wellness exam (once
you’ve had Part B for longer than 12
months and if it has been 12 months
from your “Welcome to Medicare”
physical examination.) Going for
a yearly exam will help Medicare
recipients develop or update a
prevention plan to improve their
health and well being.”
Each individual’s plan may include
recommendations for physical
activity, smoking cessation, nutrition
counseling and referral to programs
such as the chronic disease selfmanagement
program.
Medicare recipients will pay
nothing for the exam as long as
their doctor accepts the Medicare
assignment.
Ask the ISU Extension Garden Experts
About: Spring Blossoms, Flowering
Dogwoods and Black Hills Spruce
How to force spring blossoms
indoors
How do you force branches of
spring-flowering trees and shrubs
indoors?
Forcing can be done as soon as the
buds start to swell. Forsythia and
pussywillow can be forced as early
as February. It’s best to wait until
March for more difficult-to-force
ornamentals, such as crabapples,
magnolias and redbuds.
Select branches containing round,
plump buds (narrow, pointed buds
are usually leaf buds; flower buds
are generally larger and have a
more rounded shape). Make clean,
slanting cuts 1 to 2 feet from the tips
of branches with a sharp hand shears.
Selectively remove branches that
won’t destroy the natural shape of
the plant. If pruning fruit trees in late
winter, gather some of the pruned
material for forcing indoors. If
possible, collect the branches when
temperatures are above 32 degrees
Fahrenheit. If the plant material is
frozen when collected, submerge the
branches in a tub or pail of water for
a few hours.
Later, set the branches in a tall
container of water and place in a
dimly lighted, cool (60 to 65 F)
location. Spray or mist the branches
two or three times a day to prevent
the buds from drying out. Also
change the water in the container
daily during the forcing period. Daily
changes of water should inhibit the
growth of bacteria and fungi which
could interfere with the absorption
of water by the branches. When the
flower buds begin to open, move the
branches into a bright room. Keep
the flowering branches out of direct
sunlight and in a cool location to
prolong the bloom period.
The time period required to force
branches into bloom depends upon
the plant species and collection date.
Forsythia and pussywillow generally
take only one to three weeks to
three to five weeks. The closer it is to
the plant’s normal outdoor flowering
period, the less time it will take to
force the cut branches indoors.
Flowering dogwood not a fan of
Iowa winters
Can the flowering dogwood be
grown in Iowa?
The flowering dogwood (Cornus
florida) is a beautiful tree that is
widely planted in the southern
United States. Unfortunately, the
flowering dogwood is not reliably
winter hardy in most parts of Iowa.
Cows munched on Black Hills
spruce trees
Cows have defoliated the lower
branches on several Black Hills
spruce trees. Will the trees recover?
The presence or absence of
vegetative buds on the defoliated
branches will determine the extent
of damage to the Black Hills spruce
trees. If vegetative buds are still
present on the branches, the buds
will break in spring and produce
new green growth. The trees could
recover fully in two or three years.
If the buds have been destroyed
(eaten by the cows), the affected
branches will not be able to produce
new growth. The branches above
the damage will continue to grow.
The destruction of the tree’s lower
branches will not kill the trees,
but will negatively impact their
appearance and function.
Rep. Grassley
Votes for Landmark
Legislation
Wednesday, Rep. Pat Grassley
(R-New Hartford) followed
through on his campaign promise to
reduce government spending, find
efficiencies and give Iowa taxpayers
a seat at the table again with his vote
for the Taxpayers First Act.
The Taxpayers First Act saves
Iowa taxpayers over a half a billion
dollars in addition to setting aside
$327 million in tax relief. The bill
also provides $25 million to support
an un-funded state commitment
to remove Iowans from wait lists
for mental health services, a core
responsibility the state must deliver
to Iowans in need of service.
“I’ve been listening to many Iowans
who are concerned about increased
government spending, bloated
budgets and the overall growth of
government,” said Grassley. “This
bill puts the taxpayer first, is a real
step to responsible budgeting and
shrinks the size of government.”
The bill passed the House by a
vote of 60 to 40 and will now be sent
to the Senate for their consideration.
Northey Asks
Eligible Century And
Heritage Farm
Owners To Apply
Applications must be postmarked
by June 1, 2011 to be recognized at
Iowa State Fair
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill
Northey today encouraged eligible
farm owners to apply for the 2011
Century and Heritage Farm Program.
The program is sponsored by
the Iowa Department of Agriculture
and Land Stewardship and the Iowa
Farm Bureau and recognizes families
that have owned their farm for
100 years in case of Century Farms
and 150 years for Heritage Farms.
“These awards are an opportunity
to recognize the hard work and
commitment by these families that is
necessary to keep a farm in the same
family for 100 or 150 years,” Northey
said. “If you consider all the
challenges and unexpected obstacles
each of would have had to overcome
during their life on the farm, it gives
you a greater appreciation of the
dedication and perseverance of these
families.”
Farm families seeking to qualify
for the Century or Heritage Farms
Program must submit an application
no later than June 1, 2011.
Applications are available on the
Department’s website at www.IowaAgriculture.gov
by clicking on
the Century Farm or Heritage Farm
link under “Hot Topics.”
Applications may also be requested
from Linda Rosky, Coordinator
of the Century and Heritage Farm
Program via phone at 515-281-3645,
email at Linda.Rosky@IowaAgriculture..gov,
or by writing to Century
or Heritage Farms Program,
Iowa Department of Agriculture and
Land Stewardship, Henry A. Wallace
Building, 502 E. 9th St., Des
Moines, IA 50319.
Applications must be postmarked
no later than June 1st.
The ceremony to recognize the
2011 Century and Heritage Farms
will be held at the Iowa State Fair
and is tentatively scheduled for
Tuesday, August 16th.
The Century Farm program began
in 1976 as part of the Nation’s
Bicentennial Celebration and nearly
17,000 farms from across the state
have received this recognition. The
Heritage Farm program was started
in 2006, on the 30th anniversary
of the Century Farm program, and
more than 450 farms have been recognized.
Last year 346 Century Farms and
66 Heritage Farms were recognized.
Century and Heritage Farm recognitions
at the Iowa State Fair are
a great celebration of Iowa agriculture
and the families that care for the
land and produce our food,” Northey
said. “I hope eligible families will
take the time to apply and then come
down to the State Fair to be recognized.”
House Approves Historic
Taxpayers First Act
On Wednesday, January 19, the
House approved House File 45, also
known as the Taxpayers First Act.
I spoke of this bill briefly in my
previous newsletter, but given
the historic scope of this piece of
legislation, I felt you should be given
further information. The Taxpayers
First Act is the first delivery on
House Republicans campaign
promises to reduce spending and the
size of government. We were serious
about our proposals to reduce state
spending over the last two years, and
campaigned that the taxpayer should
come first, that the state exercise
fiscal restraint and follow common
sense budgeting practices. The road
to delivering those promises starts
with this bill.
However, this is just the beginning;
while the bill reduces state spending
by almost $500 million over the next
three years, we still have to cut $530
million from this year’s budget, even
after HF 45 is taken into account.
HF 45 creates the Tax Relief Fund
(TRF) to capture state surpluses and
return it to the taxpayers. House
Republicans believe this one time
money should not be used for
additional spending - but should be
returned to the taxpayer. In 2012
alone this would mean over $300
million back into the pockets of
taxpayers.
The bill also puts in motion the
process of creating a two-year
budget by requiring the Revenue
Estimating Conference (REC) to
set a revenue estimate for 2013.
Governor Branstad campaigned
on using a two-year budget to fund
the long-term tax reductions made
possible by the TRF and fund
minimal growth for key services.
HF 45 provides two supplemental
appropriations - funded from
reductions in the current year rather
than spending down the ending
balance. The bill puts in place a $25
million appropriation for 18 months
to eliminate the Mental Health wait
lists in Iowa and at the same time
puts in motion the process that will
be started immediately the redesign
of mental health delivery in Iowa.
The second supplemental will fund
the underfunded expense for indigent
defense. Both areas are priority
needs to deliver necessary services
to Iowans within the resources the
state has available.
The bill was approved on a 60-
40 vote and sent to the Senate.
All House Republicans supported
the bill and all House Democrats
opposed it. House Republicans
welcome bipartisan support and
cooperation on legislation, however,
a lot of hard work went into the
planning and organizing this bill
and we will not hesitate to move
forward. We are confident in our
support from Iowans to reduce the
size and cost of state government
and offer relief to the taxpayers. We
openly campaigned on these issues
and plan to accomplish these goals
over the next two years.
House Republicans believe the
Taxpayers First Act is the first step
in giving the taxpayers a seat at the
table and aligning ongoing spending
with ongoing revenue.
Friendship Village to Host Informational
Session on Services to Blind,
Visually Impaired Seniors
and a loss of meaningful activities,”
said Becky Criswell, supervisor
for Independent Living program at
the Department. “This presentation
will help people discover ways to
maintain their independence and to
continue activities they enjoy.”
About the Iowa Department for
the Blind
We are a state agency that provides
an array of services to blind and
visually impaired Iowans to help
them build confidence, gain or keep
employment and continue to do the
things they love to do despite vision
loss.
The Department is headquartered
in downtown Des Moines, but its
field staff are spread throughout
the state to deliver direct services
to Iowans who need them in their
homes or workplaces.
Promises
...Continued from page 2
will surely rise in the coming years
in the face of uncertainty whether
the investments will make the return
necessary to meet the promises.
Social Security was never meant
to fund a retirement, and it will not
unless you live meagerly. Most know
that. Still, the American Dream
has gone from home ownership, a
car, and food on the table, to one
of dreaming of the day one doesn’t
have to work.
It’s a false premise. The rates
of return promised for recipients
of Social Security, for IPERS, and
for private pensions, are built on
projections made years in advance
that are susceptible to major
variables. These promises have
bankrupted private businesses,
and they are on track to bankrupt
governments, aka, taxpayers.
I don’t begrudge people receiving
money from government pension
funds or Social Security, but we
have to start making some realistic
promises. With crops of people
living longer, with more and more
headed for retirement, it will take
more taxes from existing workers
to pay for those who do not work.
Those who count on those funds
need to know that in tough times, not
all promises can be kept. Those who
are approaching the age in which
they might want to count on those
funds should take a look at the lay of
the land and ponder the future. The
first good step would be to take that
2 percent payroll gift and put it in a
retirement savings account. You are
going to need it.
I promise.
