Zero findings<br />

from latest<br />

IOSA audit<br />

CX underwent its 5th IATA<br />

Operati<strong>on</strong>al Safety Audit (IOSA)<br />

Audit this year <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> has emerged<br />

with zero findings for the first<br />

time.<br />

The audit was undertaken over<br />

a five-day period in June by an<br />

IATA-approved organisati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

involved a detailed examinati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> every aspect <strong>of</strong> the airline’s<br />

operati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The Corporate Quality<br />

Department coordinated<br />

the audit from the CX side<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> am<strong>on</strong>g the departments<br />

assessed were Flight Operati<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

Inflight Services, Cargo <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Engineering.<br />

At the end <strong>of</strong> the exercise,<br />

CX compliance was established<br />

with all IOSA st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ards including<br />

the critical Safety Management<br />

System (SMS).<br />

“This was our first attempt at<br />

SMS c<strong>on</strong>formity <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> it is great<br />

news that we passed this <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> all<br />

the other st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ards laid down,”<br />

says Graham Marsh, Head <strong>of</strong><br />

Corporate Quality.<br />

“The latest audit was<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ducted by an organisati<strong>on</strong> we<br />

hadn’t worked with before <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

they were particularly rigorous.<br />

We were very happy <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> hear<br />

them say that we were <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the<br />

best airlines they’d ever audited.”<br />

Graham said that a lot <strong>of</strong> hard<br />

work went in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the audit. “The<br />

amount <strong>of</strong> effort put in by all<br />

operati<strong>on</strong>al departments was<br />

outst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing,” he adds.<br />

IOSA was initiated by IATA in<br />

2001 <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> provide a st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ardised<br />

audit programme based <strong>on</strong><br />

internati<strong>on</strong>ally recognised<br />

st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ards <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a structured<br />

system for the sharing <strong>of</strong> audit<br />

First class effort as awards flood in for products, Asia Miles<br />

<strong>Cathay</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong>’s First Class product showed its reputati<strong>on</strong> am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

frequent fliers recently by taking two <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>p awards in September.<br />

The airline w<strong>on</strong> the Airline <strong>of</strong> the Year (First Class) h<strong>on</strong>our at the<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> pick <strong>up</strong> the trophy.<br />

Toby was also <strong>on</strong> h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> at the TTG Asia Travel Awards <strong>on</strong> 4 Oc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ber<br />

in Bangkok when <strong>Cathay</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong> was named Best North Asia Airline.<br />

He was joined by Drag<strong>on</strong>air CEO Patrick Yeung who accepted<br />

the Best Regi<strong>on</strong>al Airline award for KA.<br />

The TTG awards recognise luminaries <strong>of</strong> the travel industry <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

were determined by more than 60,000 votes cast by TTG Asia readers<br />

New joint venture <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> boost H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g’s positi<strong>on</strong>ing as MRO provider<br />

The new CX/HAECO joint venture<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> provide inven<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry technical<br />

management services was set<br />

<strong>up</strong> with a clear objective: <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> build<br />

a successful third-party business<br />

that can also serve the needs <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Cathay</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong> Gro<strong>up</strong>.<br />

HAECO ITM Limited (HXITM)<br />

will combine HAECO’s existing<br />

aircraft comp<strong>on</strong>ent assets with<br />

CX’s current inven<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> s<strong>up</strong>port<br />

airlines in the CX Gro<strong>up</strong>, but there<br />

will also be a str<strong>on</strong>g focus <strong>on</strong> adding<br />

other airline cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers.<br />

“There are a number <strong>of</strong> benefits<br />

from spreading the inven<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry over<br />

a bigger pool <strong>of</strong> cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

aircraft,” says Engineering Direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

Chris<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>pher Gibbs.<br />

“Having more cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers will<br />

mean a bigger inven<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry that can<br />

be used more efficiently, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omies <strong>of</strong> scale will help us <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

TEAMING UP: Chris Gibbs <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Augustus Tang seal the deal.<br />

build a more pr<strong>of</strong>itable business,”<br />

adds Chris.<br />

The new joint venture was announced<br />

<strong>on</strong> 24 September <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

will begin operati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> 1 November<br />

from HAECO’s base at H<strong>on</strong>g<br />

K<strong>on</strong>g Internati<strong>on</strong>al Airport.<br />

CX has a 30% stake in HXITM,<br />

with HAECO owning 70%.<br />

The JV’s services will primarily<br />

cover the provisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> pool<br />

management <strong>of</strong> comp<strong>on</strong>ents<br />

inven<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry, the management <strong>of</strong><br />

comp<strong>on</strong>ent repairs <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> overhaul,<br />

s<strong>up</strong>ply chain management <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

round-the-clock s<strong>up</strong>port for AOG<br />

(aircraft <strong>on</strong> ground) incidents.<br />

Chris says that both CX<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> HAECO will bring specific<br />

strengths <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the new company.<br />

“HAECO is well established as<br />

a <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>p-tier aircraft maintenance<br />

provider, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> already has a str<strong>on</strong>g<br />

cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer drive,” says Chris.<br />

“From the CX side we will be<br />

putting our own inven<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry, valued<br />

at around US$100 milli<strong>on</strong>, in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

pool <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> providing c<strong>on</strong>siderable<br />

expertise <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> experience.”<br />

Some 20 staff from the Engineering<br />

Department will be sec<strong>on</strong>ded<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> HXITM for a two-year<br />

term, after which they’ll be <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

full-time positi<strong>on</strong>s within the JV.<br />

Chris says there is a growing trend<br />

worldwide for airlines <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> outsource<br />

capital-intensive comp<strong>on</strong>ent management<br />

activity <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> service providers.<br />

“This is becoming a comm<strong>on</strong><br />

model am<strong>on</strong>g low-cost carriers<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> airlines with small fleets,” he<br />

says.<br />

“We are <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the first major carriers<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> go down this path, but the<br />

general trend is in this directi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

we believe there is a market for such<br />

services out <strong>of</strong> H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g.”<br />

HAECO’s Chief Executive Officer<br />

Augustus Tang says the JV will<br />

help <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> strengthen H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g’s<br />

MRO (maintenance, repair <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

overhaul) positi<strong>on</strong>ing.<br />

“As we grow the business, it will<br />

also create air freight volume for<br />

HKIA <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> employment opportunities<br />

for aircraft engineering pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>als,”<br />

he says.<br />

Latest product set<br />

for Jan 2013 rollout<br />

Regi<strong>on</strong>al Business Class gives more comfort, versatility for short <strong>flights</strong><br />

<strong>Cathay</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong> celebrated its 66th birthday<br />

by unveiling the new Regi<strong>on</strong>al Business<br />

Class product <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g media.<br />

The press event, hosted by Chief Executive<br />

John Slosar <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chief Operating Officer Ivan<br />

Chu in the mock-<strong>up</strong> area at <strong>Cathay</strong> City, saw<br />

more than 20 journalists getting a chance <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> try<br />

out the new product for themselves.<br />

John said the new product was developed<br />

after listening <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> incorporating cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer<br />

feedback. “It underlines our commitment <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

excellence in innovati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> providing an<br />

excepti<strong>on</strong>al travel experience.<br />

“Our c<strong>on</strong>tinued investment in products<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> services is a key element <strong>of</strong> our <strong>on</strong>going<br />

commitment <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the development <strong>of</strong> H<strong>on</strong>g<br />

K<strong>on</strong>g as <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the world’s leading internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

aviati<strong>on</strong> hubs,” he added.<br />

General Manager Product Toby Smith says<br />

Marco Polo Club members were invited <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> take<br />

part in several rounds <strong>of</strong> mock-<strong>up</strong> trials.<br />

“We did two rounds <strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>e-<strong>on</strong>-<strong>on</strong>e interviews,<br />

eight m<strong>on</strong>ths apart. Then selected<br />

frequent fliers were invited <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> try out the<br />

first round mock-<strong>up</strong>. We then analysed their<br />

feedback, iterated the design <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> built a new<br />

functi<strong>on</strong>al mock-<strong>up</strong> prior <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> embarking <strong>on</strong> the<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d round <strong>of</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong>s,” Toby says.<br />

“Most <strong>of</strong> the feedback had <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> do with the<br />

need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> maximise living space. From that<br />

feedback, we sculpted the seat shell <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> provide<br />

increased knee <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> shin clearance <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

also footwell depth<br />

“The team worked from the basic premise<br />

that this product will cater <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> regi<strong>on</strong>al <strong>flights</strong> with<br />

five hours or less <strong>of</strong> flying time, where a flatbed<br />

product is not necessary,” Toby adds.<br />

FIRST LOOK: John Slosar <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chief<br />

Operating Officer Ivan Chu unveiled the<br />

new product at a media event.<br />

Stylish inspirati<strong>on</strong> for new amenity kits<br />

From mid-Oc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ber, the Premium Ec<strong>on</strong>omy Class amenity kits will<br />

sport a new look created by a homegrown H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g br<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

The new case designs - Fairies <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cloud – were developed by<br />

well known lifestyle br<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Goods <strong>of</strong> Desire (G.O.D.) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tain<br />

socks, an eye shade, ear plugs <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a dental set.<br />

The Fairies case, which depicts Chinese Gods enjoying themselves<br />

inflight by sipping c<strong>of</strong>fee, using the computer or reading,<br />

is available <strong>on</strong> outbound <strong>flights</strong> from H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g while the Clouds<br />

design will be distributed <strong>on</strong> inbound <strong>flights</strong>.<br />

“We chose G.O.D. because it is known for its fun niche designs<br />

inspired by the vibrant culture <strong>of</strong> H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g, which is a good fit<br />

for our Premium Ec<strong>on</strong>omy Class,” says Assistant Product Manager<br />

Catherine Sin.<br />

“The plan is <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> have four designs per year, two outbound <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

two inbound. The hope is they will become real collectibles <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> will look forward <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> receiving a new design every time<br />

they travel,” she adds.<br />

In fact, the kits have been specially designed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> become a<br />

collectible set. Each <strong>on</strong>e has a but<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n at the back which allows<br />

additi<strong>on</strong>al bags <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be attached <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> it <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> eventually create a wall<br />

hanging accessory.<br />

The team is also c<strong>on</strong>stantly looking for opportunities <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>of</strong>fer<br />

more sustainable products inflight.<br />

“At least 90% <strong>of</strong> the raw materials used in making the bag is<br />

from recycled plastic bottles, while the <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>othbrush is made mainly<br />

from corn starch <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> cellulose, which is biodegradable, recyclable<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> uses fewer resources in its producti<strong>on</strong>,” Catherine says.<br />

The new Regi<strong>on</strong>al Business Class will<br />

replace the two variati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> the Business<br />

Class product currently flying <strong>on</strong> the<br />

regi<strong>on</strong>al routes <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the first aircraft will<br />

start being retr<strong>of</strong>itted <strong>on</strong> 1 December.<br />

“The first Boeing 777 aircraft is due <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

enter service in January 2013, while the<br />

first A330-300 will be completed in the<br />

fourth quarter <strong>of</strong> 2013. All <strong>of</strong> the airline’s<br />

regi<strong>on</strong>al aircraft will be fitted with the new<br />

product by the end <strong>of</strong> 2014,” Toby says.<br />

Update from the<br />

Chief Executive<br />

The state <strong>of</strong> the aviati<strong>on</strong> industry<br />

is very much dependent <strong>on</strong> the<br />

state <strong>of</strong> the global ec<strong>on</strong>omy. When<br />

the ec<strong>on</strong>omic climate is positive,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> will fly – <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> be more<br />

willing <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> pay a higher price for<br />

the service – <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> cargo will move<br />

across the world. We saw those<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s in 2010 – a record year<br />

for our airline <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the industry as a<br />

whole – but for the past 18 m<strong>on</strong>ths<br />

we have experienced c<strong>on</strong>tinued<br />

weak dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>, particularly for cargo.<br />

Recent assessments indicate<br />

that the world’s ec<strong>on</strong>omic woes<br />

are far from over. Earlier this m<strong>on</strong>th<br />

the Internati<strong>on</strong>al M<strong>on</strong>etary Fund<br />

stated that the global ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

slowdown is worsening, cutting its<br />

growth forecasts <strong>on</strong>ce again. Europe<br />

remains <strong>on</strong> the brink <strong>of</strong> a crisis, the<br />

US is struggling <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get its ec<strong>on</strong>omy<br />

moving again, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> even the so-called<br />

BRIC ec<strong>on</strong>omies – <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>uted as the<br />

new engines for global growth – are<br />

stalling. It’s a very gloomy picture.<br />

So where does that leave <strong>Cathay</strong><br />

<strong>Pacific</strong>? After announcing a loss<br />

in the first half <strong>of</strong> 2012, we were<br />

pinning our hopes <strong>on</strong> a str<strong>on</strong>ger<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d half driven by the traditi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

peaks for cargo <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> business travel.<br />

It’s <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>o early <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> say how str<strong>on</strong>g that<br />

rebound will (or w<strong>on</strong>’t) be, but with<br />

the world’s ec<strong>on</strong>omies remaining<br />

depressed – <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> China’s growth<br />

slowing again – it’s hard <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> see<br />

much hope <strong>of</strong> a sustained recovery<br />

in 2012 at this point.<br />

We are all aware this is a cyclical<br />

industry <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> it appears we’re in<br />

a very stubborn downturn at the<br />

moment, co<strong>up</strong>led with the c<strong>on</strong>tinued<br />

burden <strong>of</strong> high fuel prices.<br />

That means we’re going <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> need<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> stay focused <strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>taining costs<br />

wherever possible. The challenges<br />

we face aren’t insurmountable by<br />

any means, but they certainly aren’t<br />

insignificant either.<br />

The key thing we need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> do is<br />

ensure that our cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers keep<br />

coming back, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> our new Regi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Business Class will play an important<br />

role in this respect. Together with our<br />

amazing First Class, world-beating<br />

new Business Class, the new<br />

Premium Ec<strong>on</strong>omy cabin <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> our<br />

great L<strong>on</strong>g-haul Ec<strong>on</strong>omy seats, I<br />

believe we will have the best suite <strong>of</strong><br />

products out <strong>of</strong> any airline, anywhere<br />

in the world.<br />

Keeping fully engaged<br />

CX World spoke <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> recently appointed Direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Corporate Affairs<br />

Chitty Cheung about the priorities in her new role <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the importance<br />

<strong>of</strong> engaging with the airline’s stakeholders<br />

When did your journey in <strong>Cathay</strong><br />

<strong>Pacific</strong> begin?<br />

It all started 25 years ago – in fact,<br />

I’m about <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get my gold bar! I<br />

joined as a Management Trainee<br />

in 1987 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> moved around the<br />

system.<br />

In <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>tal I have covered around<br />

12 different departments in H<strong>on</strong>g<br />

K<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> three outports.<br />

What have been the highlights<br />

al<strong>on</strong>g the way?<br />

My most memorable experience<br />

was probably my first overseas<br />

posting <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Los Angeles in 1990.<br />

At the time we didn’t fly <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Los<br />

Angeles, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> San Francisco was<br />

operated as a tag <strong>on</strong> the Vancouver<br />

flight. We had just bought our<br />

first 747-400, which gave us the<br />

ability <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> operate n<strong>on</strong>-s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>p <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Los<br />

Angeles, so we decided <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> shut<br />

down SFO <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> target Los Angeles<br />

– a bigger market <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a more<br />

important gateway <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the US.<br />

They sent me <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the US for six<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ths before the flight started <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

do all the preparati<strong>on</strong>s for the new<br />

route. I was thrown in at the deep<br />

end <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> just had <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> find ways <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

make it happen – it was a very<br />

steep learning curve!<br />

How do you feel about being<br />

appointed as a direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r – <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

what will the challenges be?<br />

Of course it is a great h<strong>on</strong>our <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be<br />

made a direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r – I’m very grateful<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the company for trusting me<br />

with this important job.<br />

My portfolio covers corporate<br />

communicati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the envir<strong>on</strong>ment,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> although these are<br />

both new areas for me, the training<br />

I’ve acquired as a generalist<br />

manager within <strong>Cathay</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong><br />

has prepared me. Whatever job<br />

is l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed <strong>on</strong> our desk we have<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> find a way <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> accomplish it <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

deliver results!<br />

I know how things work in the<br />

airline <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> it will help me <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> explain<br />

our positi<strong>on</strong>, business strategy<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> goals <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> our stakeholders.<br />

It’s going <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be a very interesting<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> challenging job because you<br />

wake <strong>up</strong> in the morning <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> you<br />

never know what <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> expect!<br />

The recent government <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> political<br />

changes in H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g will<br />

add <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the challenge.<br />

What are your <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>p priorities as<br />

you settle down in the job?<br />

A big part <strong>of</strong> my role is <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> manage<br />

the relati<strong>on</strong>ship with our stakeholders<br />

– not just our cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers<br />

but the government, people in<br />

political circles, opini<strong>on</strong> leaders,<br />

media, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> staff. There’s a lot <strong>of</strong><br />

engagement work that needs <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

be d<strong>on</strong>e because there have been<br />

a lot <strong>of</strong> changes in H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g in<br />

the last six m<strong>on</strong>ths.<br />

We need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> build even str<strong>on</strong>ger<br />

relati<strong>on</strong>ships with these stakeholders<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> get them <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>Cathay</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong>’s c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g.<br />

Do we need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> do more <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> enhance<br />

our reputati<strong>on</strong> locally?<br />

I think, overall, CX has enjoyed<br />

a good reputati<strong>on</strong> both in H<strong>on</strong>g<br />

K<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> overseas, but it is always<br />

good <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> improve that reputati<strong>on</strong><br />

further. We need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> drive home<br />

the fact that, as H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g’s carrier,<br />

we will fulfil our obligati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the home market.<br />

We are making big investments<br />

in H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g, creating jobs <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

s<strong>up</strong>porting the government <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the local community. But just doing<br />

these things is not enough.<br />

We need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be more visible about<br />

what we do so that H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g<br />

people will know that we’re in it<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>gether.<br />

What are the priorities <strong>on</strong> the<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>mental side?<br />

Making CX an envir<strong>on</strong>mentally<br />

c<strong>on</strong>scious <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> active corporati<strong>on</strong><br />

will be at the <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>p <strong>of</strong> my list. And we<br />

will, <strong>of</strong> course, be giving our full<br />

s<strong>up</strong>port <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Airport Authority for<br />

the envir<strong>on</strong>mental impact assessment<br />

for the third runway study.<br />

That’s very important.<br />

I’d also like <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> see more work<br />

d<strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> raise awareness am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

staff <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> encourage them <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> come<br />

<strong>up</strong> with more ideas in the areas <strong>of</strong><br />

sustainable development <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />

protecti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

It’s going <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be a high-pressure<br />

job – how do you like <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

unwind?<br />

I like <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> swim <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> play golf. Unfortunately<br />

I’ve not had any time for<br />

golf since I started this job, but I<br />

hope I can pick it <strong>up</strong> again!<br />

Cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers at the heart <strong>of</strong> terminal project<br />

As testing <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> commissi<strong>on</strong>ing<br />

work c<strong>on</strong>tinues at the <strong>Cathay</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong><br />

Cargo Terminal, work is going<br />

<strong>on</strong> in parallel <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> ensure the facility<br />

is able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> meet the expectati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong><br />

its cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers when it begins operati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

early next year.<br />

The first two cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers will, <strong>of</strong><br />

course, be <strong>Cathay</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Drag<strong>on</strong>air, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Albert Lo is the<br />

man tasked with ensuring that the<br />

new terminal will meet the airlines’<br />

Albert, sec<strong>on</strong>ded from CX as<br />

CPSL’s Manager Commercial,<br />

says that the terminal is going <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

“It’s going <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> mean smoother<br />

transhipments, more opportunities<br />

cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers,”<br />

says Albert.<br />

“It will really<br />

increase our<br />

edge.”<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> CX/KA,<br />

Albert <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

his team are<br />

working with some 30 or so stakeholders,<br />

including government<br />

<strong>of</strong>fices, airport-related organisati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> outports, who all need<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> how the terminal is<br />

going <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> work.<br />

“We need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get buy-in from<br />

these stakeholders as early as we<br />

can,” he says.<br />

“We also need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> build awareness<br />

within the industry as a whole<br />

because after year <strong>on</strong>e there will<br />

be a business opportunity <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> serve<br />

third-party cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers.”<br />

The engagement extends <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

freight forwarders, who are being<br />

advised how truckers will benefit<br />

from reduced waiting times thanks<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the “just in time” operati<strong>on</strong> at<br />

the terminal.<br />

An advanced<br />

truck c<strong>on</strong>trol system<br />

will enable<br />

them <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> go straight<br />

CPSL can manage<br />

the use <strong>of</strong> the truck<br />

throughput <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>nnage<br />

– “a win-win<br />

situati<strong>on</strong>,” Albert<br />

smiles.<br />

Mindful <strong>of</strong> the problems encountered<br />

when the new airport<br />

opened in 1998, Albert says that a<br />

lot <strong>of</strong> planning is going in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> ensuring<br />

a smooth transiti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The terminal will have a threestage<br />

opening <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> “give us flexibility<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> provide more assurance,”<br />

Albert says.<br />

In Stage 1, the terminal will h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>le<br />

mainly valuable cargo <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> interface<br />

transfers; Stage 2, beginning<br />

May, will see the terminal h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ling<br />

imports; <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Stage 3, from September,<br />

will include exports.<br />

“Stage 2 is the big test. If we<br />

pass this we’ll feel a lot more c<strong>on</strong>fident<br />

about the operati<strong>on</strong> going<br />

forward,” Albert says.<br />

Interactive CX World<br />

<strong>on</strong>eworld boost as<br />

Qatar invited <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> join<br />

Alliance extends Middle East reach with major regi<strong>on</strong>al player<br />

Highly regarded Middle Eastern carrier<br />

Qatar Airways (QR) has been<br />

c<strong>on</strong>firmed as the next airline <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> come<br />

<strong>on</strong>board a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>on</strong>eworld<br />

alliance.<br />

The carrier’s electi<strong>on</strong> as a member<br />

designate was announced <strong>on</strong> 8<br />

Oc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ber at a press c<strong>on</strong>ference in<br />

New York, attended by CEOs from a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> alliance members.<br />

The implementati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Dohabased<br />

carrier in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>eworld is expected<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> take between 12 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 18<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ths.<br />

QR – named Skytrax Airline <strong>of</strong><br />

the Year for the past two years – will<br />

become the first <strong>of</strong> the major Gulf<br />

airlines <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> sign for any <strong>of</strong> the global<br />

airline alliances.<br />

Its Chief Executive Officer, Akbar<br />

Al Baker, said that after carefully reviewing<br />

its strategic opti<strong>on</strong>s, QR is<br />

“very clear that joining <strong>on</strong>eworld is<br />

by far the best way forward for us<br />

as we look <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> strengthen our competitive<br />

<strong>of</strong>fering <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> give <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

what they fully deserve – more<br />

choice.”<br />

QR currently serves 120 destina-<br />

More CX <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> can enjoy the benefits<br />

<strong>of</strong> using a Mobile Boarding Pass as the<br />

network <strong>of</strong> destinati<strong>on</strong>s where the service<br />

is available grows.<br />

The service was rolled out in Rome, Tor<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bahrain <strong>on</strong> 28 August.<br />

Starting 1 November, <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> can<br />

check in <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> board using their mobile<br />

devices at nine more destinati<strong>on</strong>s, including<br />

Narita <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Haneda in Tokyo, Nagoya,<br />

Osaka/Kansai, Sapporo/Chi<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>se, Fukuoka,<br />

Amsterdam, Jeddah <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kuala Lumpur.<br />

It is also <strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer for <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> checking<br />

in at H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g, Auckl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Vancouver<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Taipei.<br />

Passengers who check in <strong>on</strong>line can<br />

choose <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> receive a boarding pass in the<br />

form <strong>of</strong> an email or text message <strong>on</strong> their<br />

mobile devices. The service is also available<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> transit <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> at H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g<br />

who originate from the eligible airports.<br />

“While the overall rate <strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>line check-in<br />

usage has remained stable after the initial<br />

roll out <strong>of</strong> the MBP service in January, the<br />

number <strong>of</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> who are downloading<br />

mobile boarding passes has almost<br />

doubled in July compared <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> January,” says<br />

Manager eBusiness Lawrence F<strong>on</strong>g.<br />

“We expect usage <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> grow with the expansi<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> the feature <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> new ports as well<br />

as <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> transit <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> in H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g,”<br />

adds e-Business Services <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> CRM Assis-<br />

ti<strong>on</strong>s in 70 countries in the Middle<br />

East, Europe, Africa, North <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> South<br />

America, Asia <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Australasia.<br />

Fifteen <strong>of</strong> its destinati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

three countries – Iran, Rw<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>a <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the Seychelles – will be new <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

<strong>on</strong>eworld map.<br />

The carrier is set <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> move in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a<br />

br<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> new home in 2013 with the<br />

opening <strong>of</strong> the New Doha Internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Airport, designed with an<br />

eventual capacity for 50 milli<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

a year.<br />

QR operates <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the world’s<br />

youngest <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> most modern fleets,<br />

currently st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing at 111 Boeing <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Airbus aircraft with an average age<br />

<strong>of</strong> just four years old.<br />

The Gulf carrier becomes the third<br />

member designate lined <strong>up</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> join<br />

the alliance.<br />

Malaysian Airlines is expected<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> come <strong>on</strong>board either later in this<br />

year or early in 2013, while SriLankan<br />

Airlines will join later in 2013.<br />

Kingfisher Airlines is also still <strong>of</strong>ficially<br />

a member elect though its<br />

implementati<strong>on</strong> has been put <strong>on</strong><br />

hold.<br />

More ports get ready for<br />

mobile boarding service<br />

ADDED BENEFIT: More <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> are using<br />

mobile devices for check-in <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> boarding.<br />

tant Manager Brian Chan.<br />

When picking new airports <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> launch the<br />

service, Brian says his team c<strong>on</strong>siders the<br />

readiness <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the overall cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer experience<br />

at each airport.<br />

“Some airports still require another prin<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ut<br />

or receipt at security checkpoints. Others<br />

require <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> scan their mobile<br />

boarding pass at self-service kiosks in<br />

order <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get a paper slip, which defeats the<br />

purpose <strong>of</strong> paperless check-in,” he says.<br />

“We will not roll out Mobile Boarding<br />

Pass services at airports until all the checkin<br />

procedures are refined <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> our preferred<br />

st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ard,” Brian adds.<br />

REACHING OUT: Qatar CEO Akbar Al Baker (centre) with crew members as<br />

the airline is welcomed in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <strong>on</strong>eworld alliance as a member designate.<br />

Obituary –<br />

Pearl Aurice<br />

Palma-Litan<br />

Friends<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> former<br />

colleagues<br />

were<br />

deeply<br />

saddened<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> hear <strong>of</strong><br />

the sudden<br />

passing <strong>of</strong> Pearl Litan <strong>on</strong> 18<br />

September.<br />

Philippines-born Pearl joined<br />

CX in 1985 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> was promoted <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

2006.<br />

With her CX batch mates,<br />

Pearl celebrated her 20th anniversary<br />

with the airline by raising<br />

funds <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> d<strong>on</strong>ate <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a charity organisati<strong>on</strong><br />

in the Philippines, later<br />

helping <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> form a gro<strong>up</strong> called<br />

“CX Crew Pinays for Progress”<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tribute <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> charity efforts.<br />

Pearl founded an NGO, Philippine<br />

Cabin Crew Charities Inc<br />

(PCCCI), while still with <strong>Cathay</strong><br />

<strong>Pacific</strong>.<br />

She retired from flying in July<br />

2011 <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> pursue her charity efforts<br />

full time.<br />

She is survived by husb<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Noel, s<strong>on</strong> Julian, daughter Mariel<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> six siblings.

A grateful regular passenger paid a special<br />

visit <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Cathay</strong> City <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> meet with the<br />

staff from the H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g Office Reservati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

team who had been helping her<br />

out over the years.<br />

Ms Cheung visited four H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g Office Reservati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer Sales Officers <strong>on</strong> 28 September <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> presented<br />

them with small gifts <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> show her appreciati<strong>on</strong> for the<br />

caring service they had provided <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> her over the past few<br />

years.<br />

The four – Cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer Sales Officers Joyce Kwok, Sarajane<br />

Chan <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Christy Lam, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer Sales S<strong>up</strong>ervisor<br />

M<strong>on</strong>ita Pang – were very <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>uched by her visit.<br />

Ms Cheung said she had stayed a loyal CX cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer<br />

because <strong>of</strong> the service the team had always provided <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

she calls them <strong>up</strong> every time she travels.<br />

Member Service Executive Innah Sut<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n<br />

from the Philippines Service Centre was<br />

commended by a cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer for the service<br />

she provided.<br />

“I have just spoken with Member Service Executive Innah<br />

Sut<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> she was excellent.<br />

Very rarely do I encounter good cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer service like that<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> so I feel it was necessary <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> make a formal thank you <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

her <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> ensure that the company is aware <strong>of</strong> her efforts.<br />

I had many questi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> had difficulty with the <strong>on</strong>line<br />

booking system. She was able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> easily solve my problems<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> make my booking.”<br />

HKIA S<strong>up</strong>ervisor Shirley Or helped an<br />

elderly co<strong>up</strong>le with their meet-<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>-greet<br />

arrangements when they were travelling<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rome.<br />

“My parents, who are in their 80s, required assistance<br />

S<strong>up</strong>ervisor Shirley Or at<br />

H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g airport<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> she was very<br />

helpful <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> efficient<br />

in sorting out<br />

our requirements.<br />

Being in the service<br />

industry myself,<br />

I do know it is a challenge<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> keep service<br />

st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ards high <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> I<br />

wanted <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>of</strong>fer my<br />

Stuck in the middle<br />

Could you please clarify who receives priority <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be <strong>up</strong>graded?<br />

My underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing is that ID <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> have a higher<br />

priority for <strong>up</strong>grades, but it is plain that revenue <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

have a much better chance <strong>of</strong> being <strong>up</strong>graded than<br />

ID <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

I would also like <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> know why when bulhead or aisle seats<br />

are still available, ID <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> get the middle seats?<br />

I underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> that when the flight is full, then the better<br />

seats are given <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> revenue <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g>. However staff <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

get their boarding passes after the passenger counter<br />

has already closed.<br />

By that time surely ground staff should know what seats<br />

are available, so there is no need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> give ID <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the middle seats all the time. Is there a regulati<strong>on</strong> that ID<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> get the middle seats?<br />

And finally, while I underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> that the staff at the st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>by<br />

counter are always busy, that is no excuse for not smiling or<br />

even being grumpy. We all work for the same company <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

we should be nice <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> each other.<br />

b<strong>on</strong>d the crew have with <strong>Cathay</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong>.<br />

“Thanks <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Facebook we were able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> chat with Nimo<br />

O’C<strong>on</strong>nor, a fellow retiree, about getting retirees back<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g for a homecoming,” says Mina Bi<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> from<br />

Manila.<br />

“Anne Cano-Shearer came <strong>on</strong>board as the organiser<br />

in H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> things started <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> happen,” she<br />

adds.<br />

The event was held at the H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g Police Officers’<br />

Club <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> there was a dazzling array <strong>of</strong> evening<br />

gowns <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> nati<strong>on</strong>al costumes.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> the guests joined CX in the 1960s,<br />

though most were from the 70s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 80s.<br />

Am<strong>on</strong>g those turning <strong>up</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> help ensure the evening<br />

was a success were Chief Executive John Slosar,<br />

ISD’s Pom Kum<strong>on</strong>tam<strong>on</strong>t, Kevin Ip, the Inflight Sales<br />

Team <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Employee Services Manager Bob Nipperess.<br />

“The ballroom was filled with positive energy <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

a lot <strong>of</strong> excitement at seeing friends <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> former colleagues,”<br />

says co-organiser Mae Neils<strong>on</strong>.<br />

“The evening was full <strong>of</strong> happy memories, but it<br />

was not enough time for all the jubilati<strong>on</strong> so another<br />

party is already <strong>on</strong> the drawing board!” she adds.<br />

The homecoming had a more serious side. An<br />

objective <strong>of</strong> the event was “To Give Back <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

Community We Serve”, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> more than HK$40,000<br />

was raised in a silent aucti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The m<strong>on</strong>ey will go <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Sunnyside Club <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

another CX-s<strong>up</strong>ported charity in Tung Chung that<br />

cares for senior citizens.<br />

“It <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ok more than a year <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> put <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>gether but the<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>se was tremendous. I would like <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> sincerely<br />

thank every<strong>on</strong>e who helped make the event such a<br />

resounding success!” says Anne Cano-Shearer.<br />

Linda Kendig, Manager<br />

– IMM H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g,<br />

Boeing (Asia)<br />

What is the main part <strong>of</strong><br />

your job?<br />

The Boeing Integrated Materials<br />

Management (IMM) programme<br />

is a partnership between CX <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the Boeing Company.<br />

Our daily focus is <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> provide<br />

s<strong>up</strong>port <strong>on</strong> expendable/c<strong>on</strong>sumable<br />

aircraft parts <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> ensure the<br />

scheduled maintenance programmes<br />

for CX have sufficient<br />

parts available in s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ck when that<br />

maintenance is required.<br />

Our team provides the inven<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry<br />

management, forecasting<br />

projecti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> bin replenishment<br />

<strong>of</strong> the parts ordering process.<br />

To ensure the integrity <strong>of</strong> our<br />

parts while they are s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>red in<br />

the s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ckroom bin, we perform<br />

r<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>om audits which identify any<br />

unserviceable, shelf life expired<br />

or damaged parts that may have<br />

found their way back in <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ckroom.<br />

We work closely with a team<br />

<strong>of</strong> people within CX who assist<br />

IMM with data management <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the loading <strong>of</strong> that data in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

Ultramain system.<br />

What is the advantage <strong>of</strong><br />

working out <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cathay</strong> City?<br />

When you have an integrated<br />

system, being at the cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mers’<br />

site is imperative in getting <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

know exactly what the cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer<br />

wants <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing their<br />

needs.<br />

We attend daily meetings with<br />

maintenance <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> AOG Desk s<strong>up</strong>port<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> this allows us <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be as<br />

close <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer as possible.<br />

It helps us learn how we can<br />

better s<strong>up</strong>port each other during<br />

<strong>up</strong>coming fleet retirements or<br />

new aircraft being brought in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

service.<br />

What do you like best about<br />

your job?<br />

After being here four years, I am<br />

still meeting new people <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> facing<br />

new challenges.<br />

It encourages me <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

see achievements – for instance<br />

the entry in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> service <strong>of</strong> a new<br />

aircraft such as the 747-800.<br />

It is also great <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> know my<br />

team has taken part in getting<br />

grounded aircraft back in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> service<br />

again.<br />

Sign <strong>of</strong> the times<br />

Three Boeing 747-400s being retired from the fleet in September <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Oc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ber will go <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the small Kemble facility in the UK. Captain Colin<br />

Parker – a keen aviati<strong>on</strong> pho<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>grapher – recently got the chance<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> capture some striking images at the much bigger “b<strong>on</strong>e yard” at<br />

Vic<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rville in California…<br />

I recently had the memorable experience<br />

<strong>of</strong> driving <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Southern<br />

California Logistics Airport in Vic<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rville.<br />

This is <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the main aircraft<br />

s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rage facilities in the United<br />

States <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> al<strong>on</strong>g with others such<br />

as Mojave, Marana <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tusc<strong>on</strong><br />

– all in dry desert locati<strong>on</strong>s – it acts<br />

as a place where airlines <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> leasing<br />

companies can s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>re aircraft<br />

for either the short or l<strong>on</strong>g term.<br />

Some airlines temporarily s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>re<br />

aircraft when dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> is down,<br />

while other aircraft are s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>red until<br />

new owners can be found.<br />

Some, sadly, never fly again,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the scrapping area at Vic<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rville<br />

always has a queue <strong>of</strong> planes<br />

awaiting their final fate.<br />

Located about three hours’ drive<br />

from Los Angeles, Vic<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rville is not<br />

a public airport <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>, unfortunately,<br />

there are no public <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>urs. However,<br />

a drive around the perimeter fence<br />

allows a good view <strong>of</strong> most <strong>of</strong> the<br />

aircraft s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>red here – though a<br />

four-wheel drive is recommended.<br />

I also rented a Cessna light aircraft<br />

from nearby Apple Valley airport<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> flew right over Vic<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rville, taking<br />

pho<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>s as I went (with the help <strong>of</strong> an<br />

instruc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r pilot, <strong>of</strong> course!).<br />

The airport allows general aviati<strong>on</strong><br />

traffic <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ce we l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed I<br />

managed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get more pho<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <strong>of</strong><br />

aircraft in the short-term s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rage<br />

area including a visit <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> B-HOO,<br />

<strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> our 747-400s that was sent<br />

for scrapping earlier this year.<br />

It is sad but n<strong>on</strong>etheless interesting<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> see around 200 airliners<br />

– both older <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> more modern<br />

models – being s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>red, though it<br />

can feel eerie being close <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> so<br />

many aircraft without hearing the<br />

sounds you usually associate with<br />

a busy airport.<br />

All you can hear is the wind <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the gentle clacking sound <strong>of</strong> engine<br />

fan blades spinning in the breeze,<br />

occasi<strong>on</strong>ally interr<strong>up</strong>ted by the odd<br />

tumbleweed passing by.<br />

A Vic<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rville visit is a must for<br />

any enthusiast who happens <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be<br />

in the Los Angeles area <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> has a<br />

day <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> spare.<br />

BONEYARD BLUES: Colin’s striking but sad images taken as he flew over Vic<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rville. Top: Several CX aircraft have been through the facility over the years.

New loading management system st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s out<br />

Staff in several outports <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

Centralised Load C<strong>on</strong>trol (CLC)<br />

team at HAS are already enjoying<br />

the benefits <strong>of</strong> the next generati<strong>on</strong><br />

aircraft weight <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> load management<br />

system – the Altéa FM.<br />

The system has been successfully<br />

implemented in 17 Drag<strong>on</strong>air<br />

ports around the regi<strong>on</strong> including<br />

13 ports in Mainl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> China as well<br />

as Jeju, Okinawa, Chiang Mai <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Taichung.<br />

“The s<strong>up</strong>port <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> guidance we<br />

received was very good which<br />

made adaptati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the new system<br />

much easier,” says Wuhan Airport<br />

Services Manager Susan Xia.<br />

Features <strong>of</strong> the new system include<br />

a user-friendly graphical format<br />

which makes it much easier<br />

Mainl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> China project will be added <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the FLY greener programme<br />

The Guangd<strong>on</strong>g Cha<strong>on</strong>an Shal<strong>on</strong>g<br />

wind project will be added <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Cathay</strong><br />

<strong>Pacific</strong>’s FLY greener programme<br />

in November, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />

Affairs team organised a visit <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

learn more about the benefits the<br />

wind farm brings.<br />

Assistant Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Manager<br />

Prian Chan says: “The project brings<br />

clean energy <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the local community<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> employment <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> locals who may<br />

otherwise have moved <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> neighbouring<br />

cities,” he says.<br />

Another FLY greener project is<br />

also located in Guangd<strong>on</strong>g, near<br />

the <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>wn <strong>of</strong> Lankou.<br />

“Both renewable energy projects<br />

feed clean electricity in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the China<br />

Southern Power Grid <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> help <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

reduce local air pollutants. The two<br />

are a good mix,” Prian adds.<br />

The project was sourced through<br />

First Climate <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> is part <strong>of</strong> the diversificati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> China’s energy mix.<br />

The electricity generated is s<strong>up</strong>-<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> use, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> staff are already commenting<br />

<strong>on</strong> the advantages that it<br />

brings.<br />

Cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer Service Officer Brian<br />

Xu says: “It’s an advanced system<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> easy <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> use. We are saving<br />

time by using FM as it can au<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>identify<br />

errors which helps reduce<br />

the mish<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ling rate.”<br />

Load C<strong>on</strong>trol Manager Tommy<br />

W<strong>on</strong>g says he likes having more<br />

functi<strong>on</strong>al displays such as loading<br />

diagrams, trim graphs <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> loadsheets.<br />

“This helps the load c<strong>on</strong>trol <strong>of</strong>ficers<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>i<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r weight <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> balance<br />

with greater accuracy,” he says.<br />

Deputy Manager Line Operati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Jim Ashby says: “From the<br />

pilot’s perspective, the load sheet<br />

format has been improved <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

presentati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> n<strong>on</strong>-st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ard fuel<br />

loads has been simplified.”<br />

“The rate <strong>of</strong> global warming is<br />

alarming so I would like <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> learn<br />

more about alternative sources <strong>of</strong><br />

other staff <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>, as <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> can<br />

now buy carb<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong>fsets as part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

inflight duty free sales programme, I<br />

will be able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> explain the project <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

them in more detail,” Garius adds.<br />

Prian says new projects are added<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the programme when CX runs<br />

“There is a l<strong>on</strong>g list <strong>of</strong> items we<br />

look at as part <strong>of</strong> our due diligence<br />

process before a project is selected.<br />

This particular <strong>on</strong>e was chosen for<br />

its proximity <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g, which<br />

makes it easier <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> relate <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

says.<br />

Volunteers thanked for their ‘inspirati<strong>on</strong>al’ example<br />

The “inspiring” work d<strong>on</strong>e by the CX Volunteers was in<br />

the spotlight <strong>on</strong> 24 September at the annual appreciati<strong>on</strong><br />

party, with Chief Operating Officer Ivan Chu <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

Corporate Affairs Chitty Cheung thanking them for giving<br />

<strong>up</strong> their free time as well as their pers<strong>on</strong>al commitment<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> helping other people.<br />

“The fact that you can find the time <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> effort <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> help<br />

out in the community is an inspirati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> your colleagues<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> I hope it will encourage more staff <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> join you,” Chitty<br />

said.<br />

An exhibiti<strong>on</strong> panel <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> video featured various<br />

activities the CX Volunteers had participated in.<br />

Ten staff were recognised for c<strong>on</strong>tributing the<br />

New product<br />

a highlight <strong>on</strong><br />

the Paris route<br />

It has been a busy time for the Paris team with the <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />

opening <strong>of</strong> a new lounge at Paris Charles De Gaulle<br />

(Roissy) Airport <strong>on</strong> 25 September <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the start <strong>of</strong> Premium<br />

Al<strong>on</strong>gside this, the team also launched a special promoti<strong>on</strong><br />

The first PEY <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> were greeted with a welcome<br />

feedback <strong>on</strong> the new product from <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g>, who<br />

commented <strong>on</strong> the improved seating <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> extra space.<br />

“One elderly lady who was visiting her family said it<br />

in these markets <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> benefit from this campaign,” Kin<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

says.<br />

An added <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>uch is a dedicated counter within the department<br />

A slightly retimed schedule in the coming winter schedule<br />

will further provide c<strong>on</strong>nectivity <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> more destinati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

across the CX <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> KA networks.<br />

“We worked with French train company SNCF <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> provide<br />

a shorter c<strong>on</strong>necting time between CX <strong>flights</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

our code-share TGV train services <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> provincial France,”<br />

Kin<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> says.<br />

An extended interline agreement with Air France covers<br />

new destinati<strong>on</strong>s in the Iberian Peninsula.<br />

“Our <strong>on</strong>eworld partner Iberia serves another airport in<br />

Paris which makes transitting <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Spain via Paris a bit difficult,”<br />

Kin<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> explains.<br />

“France is the closest country <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Iberian Peninsula<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> as Air France <strong>flights</strong> also leave from Terminal 2, the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> is much easier for our <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

“All these initiatives are designed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> improve the cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mer<br />

Staff innovate <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> grow<br />

After two m<strong>on</strong>ths <strong>of</strong> running the Taiwan Innovati<strong>on</strong> Project, the<br />

final round <strong>of</strong> the competiti<strong>on</strong> was held in August with 80 staff from<br />

across Taiwan taking part.<br />

The 10 gro<strong>up</strong>s presented the innovative ideas they had spent<br />

the past two m<strong>on</strong>ths refining. The ideas covered changes in their<br />

busines or workplace <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> communicati<strong>on</strong> with travel agents.<br />

Special guest judges included Direc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r & General Manager<br />

Asia Miles Stephen W<strong>on</strong>g, Country Manager<br />

Korea Clarence Chung, Head <strong>of</strong> Organisati<strong>on</strong><br />

Development & Change Graham Barkus <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g-based Marco Polo Club member<br />

David Cheung.<br />

General Manager Taiwan & Korea Vivian<br />

Lo said: “Though this is a competiti<strong>on</strong>, the<br />

spirit <strong>of</strong> cooperati<strong>on</strong> is the most important<br />

thing.” She encouraged staff <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tinuously<br />

use innovative ways <strong>of</strong> thinking <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> overcome<br />

difficulties.<br />

The final winners were the Innovatus team with staff from the<br />

Taoyuan Airport Cargo <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Engineering departments <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

GivMe 5 team from Taipei Town Office.<br />

The event also included a farewell dinner for Sales Manager<br />

Cliff Lee who left CX after 35 years <strong>of</strong> service.<br />

The cargo team in Colombo had a busy time <strong>on</strong> 26 August<br />

when an ad hoc charter carrying an aircraft engine from<br />

board al<strong>on</strong>g with an extra 7.5 <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ns <strong>of</strong> general cargo <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Germany.<br />

It was a great opportunity <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> highlight the ability <strong>of</strong> the<br />

local team as well as <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> show the potential in the Sri Lanka<br />

cargo market.<br />

before it was due <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> fly out <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g.<br />

The event gave the gro<strong>up</strong> a chance <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> experience the<br />

new Premium Ec<strong>on</strong>omy cabin as well as the new l<strong>on</strong>ghaul<br />

Ec<strong>on</strong>omy Class seats.<br />

The Vancouver team also <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ok part in a beach clean<strong>up</strong><br />

The running man<br />

Finance Manager Australia Stephen Hinwood started running<br />

about eight years ago <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> participated in various races<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> half marath<strong>on</strong>s before taking part in his first Sydney<br />

Westlink M7 Marath<strong>on</strong> in July.<br />

His goal going in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the 42-kilometre event was <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> finish<br />

in less than three hours <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> he achieved that goal by coming<br />

in at two hours 59 minutes.<br />

“I have been wanting <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> run a marath<strong>on</strong> for about four<br />

years now but every time I started the training I got injured<br />

after a few weeks, so I c<strong>on</strong>centrated<br />

<strong>on</strong> the shorter distances <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> shelved<br />

the idea <strong>of</strong> running a marath<strong>on</strong>,” Stephen<br />

says.<br />

“A sub three-hour marath<strong>on</strong> is a<br />

very challenging goal which many<br />

runners aspire <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>. But all my training<br />

paid <strong>of</strong>f <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> I have achieved<br />

a goal which I thought I would<br />

never reach,” he adds.<br />

As any runner will tell you,<br />

the training required for a marath<strong>on</strong><br />

is gruelling, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> determinati<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> discipline are needed.<br />

“I followed an 18-week advanced<br />

marath<strong>on</strong> programme <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

ran more than 110 kilometres per<br />

week, starting at 4:30am during<br />

the week so I could make it <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice <strong>on</strong> time,” he says.<br />

“Despite this I would encourage every<strong>on</strong>e<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> running. It is a great<br />

Assagaff<br />

1. Why are you<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten recognised by Ind<strong>on</strong>esian<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g>?<br />

I was previously a news anchor<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> reporter for a local TV stati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

2. How did you get in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

journalism?<br />

I studied public relati<strong>on</strong>s at university<br />

during which I s<strong>up</strong>ported<br />

myself with modelling jobs. After<br />

graduati<strong>on</strong> a scout from a stati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>fered a job.<br />

3. What is your most memorable<br />

experience?<br />

I was assigned <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> follow the President<br />

for a year <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> almost every<br />

day I met government <strong>of</strong>ficials.<br />

4. You also <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ok w<strong>on</strong> the<br />

Ind<strong>on</strong>esia Cosmo Man<br />

competiti<strong>on</strong> in 2010?<br />

I was invited by Cosmopolitan<br />

magazine <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> take part – they were<br />

looking for men with energy <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a<br />

positive attitude.<br />

5. What is the biggest challenge<br />

you faced?<br />

The extreme food secti<strong>on</strong> when<br />

we had <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> eat a snake. I lost that<br />

round!<br />

6. Why did you join CX?<br />

I went <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> an interview with a friend<br />

in Jakarta – she didn’t pass but<br />

I did!<br />

7. From TV anchor <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> cabin<br />

crew – that must be a hard<br />

move <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> make?<br />

Yes, especially as my career was<br />

doing so well at the time. But I<br />

chose CX because <strong>of</strong> its famous<br />

br<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> name, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the opportunity<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> work outside Ind<strong>on</strong>esia.<br />

8. How has the switch been<br />

for you?<br />

I have had more time <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> enjoy life<br />

than working in journalism which<br />

has strict deadlines <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> meet.<br />

9. Is there any c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong><br />

between the two jobs?<br />

As a reporter, I learned the importance<br />

<strong>of</strong> seeing the pers<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> not<br />

just the s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry. So if something<br />

happens inflight, I try <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

see the situati<strong>on</strong> from the<br />

passenger’s point <strong>of</strong> view.<br />

10. What do you like<br />

most about<br />

being a cabin<br />

crew?<br />

“ICC was founded in 1993 by<br />

Attendant Cynthia Tsang.<br />

This year overseas c<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>idates from Canada, New York <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Australia were chosen <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> participate, before 38 women were<br />

chosen out <strong>of</strong> hundreds <strong>of</strong> applicants.<br />

“I passed the interview in Vancouver <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> within a week I<br />

was <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ld I had been chosen. I was very happy <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> excited <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

compete. The Vancouver-based crew were very s<strong>up</strong>portive <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

encouraging <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> it was a great motivati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> have such str<strong>on</strong>g<br />

s<strong>up</strong>port,” Cynthia says.<br />

As it was the 40th anniversary <strong>of</strong> the event, participants<br />

were taken <strong>on</strong> severa overseas trips with eliminati<strong>on</strong>s made<br />

cilities is in Changsha caught my<br />

attenti<strong>on</strong> because <strong>of</strong> a family c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>,”<br />

Elizabeth adds.<br />

Elizabeth’s father is from Hunan<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Changsha is the closest city<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lin Shang village where he was<br />

born.<br />

“Although I have never been<br />

throughout the c<strong>on</strong>test.<br />

“We went <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bangkok, Koh Samui, L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Mainl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ok part in challenges al<strong>on</strong>g the way,” Cynthia says.<br />

“We were filmed everywhere we went, so it did feel a bit like<br />

a reality show, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> there were a lot <strong>of</strong> challenges similar <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

<strong>on</strong>es <strong>on</strong> America’s Next Top Model or Survivor. In <strong>on</strong>e challenge<br />

two girls were left <strong>on</strong> a private isl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> in Koh Samui where they<br />

had <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> build their own tent <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> stay overnight. I was worried<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> then felt bad for them when they came back covered in<br />

mosqui<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> bites,” she adds.<br />

Cynthia says it was a life-changing experience that<br />

taught her the importance <strong>of</strong> reaching for your goals<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> dreams.<br />

“We learned how <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>le the catwalk, the<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> posture <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the importance <strong>of</strong> an<br />

entire elegant look,” she says.<br />

“As a crew I deal with different people <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

different cultures so I have a lot <strong>of</strong> people skills,<br />

which helped a lot. What I learned most from<br />

this experience that I will take back <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> my job is<br />

the importance <strong>of</strong> a first impressi<strong>on</strong>,” she adds.<br />

Cynthia made it <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the last round <strong>of</strong> 10<br />

c<strong>on</strong>testants before being eliminated during<br />

the final televised show in August.<br />

“My favourite part was the dancing for<br />

the final performance with Can<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>-pop star<br />

Aar<strong>on</strong> Kwok’s dance instruc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r S<strong>on</strong>ny W<strong>on</strong>g.<br />

I have no experience in dancing <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> they were<br />

very patient <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> made it a lot <strong>of</strong> fun. It was also a<br />

great feeling <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> know that I had d<strong>on</strong>e well in that<br />

performance,” she says.<br />

Cynthia is now back at work <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> gets the<br />

occasi<strong>on</strong>al sec<strong>on</strong>d glance from <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

“It feels strange <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be recognised by<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g>. But I was also <strong>on</strong> the cover <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Discover the Shop magazine for a few m<strong>on</strong>ths,<br />

so I wasn’t sure if they recognised me from the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>test or from the magazine!” she says.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Hunan, my father always been<br />

very c<strong>on</strong>cerned about his birthplace.<br />

S<strong>up</strong>porting the care facility<br />

gives me the opportunity <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>nect<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> my roots,” she says.<br />

Journey <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Miss HK final

Veteran bids farewell<br />

When Peter Yeung first joined CX in 1972, little did he know that just<br />

over four decades later he would be celebrating his retirement <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

receiving his 40-year l<strong>on</strong>g-service pin <strong>on</strong> the same day.<br />

“This is the <strong>on</strong>ly company I ever worked for. I put down my school<br />

bag <strong>on</strong>e day <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> joined CX the next,” he says.<br />

Peter started <strong>on</strong> 10 April 1972 as a messenger travelling around<br />

H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> held five different positi<strong>on</strong>s before ending <strong>up</strong> as a<br />

Travel Services Advisor.<br />

Peter particularly enjoyed his time working at the Swire House<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

“I arranged the travel, issued tickets <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> arranged hotels – basically<br />

doing everything for the staff there. Even when they moved<br />

<strong>of</strong>fices, I had <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> plan all that out,” he says.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the senior managers he worked with was previous CX<br />

Chairman Peter Sutch, whom he retains f<strong>on</strong>d memories <strong>of</strong>.<br />

“He was a very nice man <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> he treated every<strong>on</strong>e the same<br />

whether they were managers or junior staff – every<strong>on</strong>e was important<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> him,” Peter says.<br />

Peter doesn’t have any set plans for his retirement other than <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

enjoy himself, but the first important event was his s<strong>on</strong>’s wedding in<br />

September.<br />

“My daughter-in-law is<br />

Malaysian so we held<br />

a dinner in both countries,<br />

which made the<br />

first few days <strong>of</strong> retirement<br />

very exciting,” he<br />

says.<br />

Getting<br />

Flight Attendant<br />

Ari Kusumawardana pho<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>graphed<br />

a religious cerem<strong>on</strong>y in Bali<br />

Earlier this year, I attended a religious cerem<strong>on</strong>y in<br />

Bali called Nyepi, which is a “Day <strong>of</strong> Silence” during<br />

which devotees spend some time in silence, fasting,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> meditati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

A few days beforeh<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Hindus perform a ritual<br />

called Melasti. The Melasti cerem<strong>on</strong>y is a religious<br />

ritual <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> purify or remove debris in your life <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> is<br />

symbolised by putting <strong>of</strong>ferings in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the sea.<br />

The process expunges all impure words, thoughts<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> deeds <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the cerem<strong>on</strong>y can be performed at<br />

the sea or by a lake.<br />

The ritual begins with a reading <strong>of</strong> the prayer <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Sang Hyang Wasa Widhi led by the Begawan.<br />

The beautiful incantati<strong>on</strong> is then followed by the attendees<br />

holding <strong>up</strong> their h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> beg for the blessing<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> forgiveness, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a traditi<strong>on</strong>al Balinese dance is<br />

performed.<br />

The holy water is taken by the Begawan <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be distributed<br />

before <strong>of</strong>ferings are presented <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the sea.<br />

Every attendee is required <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>uch the holy water<br />

as a symbol <strong>of</strong> the washing out <strong>of</strong> all impurities.<br />

As she was <strong>on</strong> her way back <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lhasa, she passed through a<br />

wide swath <strong>of</strong> desert.<br />

“I saw this magnificent sight <strong>of</strong> a Tibetan man crossing the desert with<br />

hundreds, if not thous<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <strong>of</strong> sheep. From what I could see, they were<br />

the <strong>on</strong>ly things in the whole desert,” Kelly says.<br />
