Qatar Airways (QR) has been<br />

<strong>on</strong>board a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>on</strong>eworld<br />
alliance.<br />
The carrier’s electi<strong>on</strong> as a member<br />
designate was announced <strong>on</strong> 8<br />
Oc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ber at a press c<strong>on</strong>ference in<br />
New York, attended by CEOs from a<br />
number <strong>of</strong> alliance members.<br />
The implementati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Dohabased<br />
carrier in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>eworld is expected<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> take between 12 <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 18<br />
m<strong>on</strong>ths.<br />
QR – named Skytrax Airline <strong>of</strong><br />
the Year for the past two years – will<br />
become the first <strong>of</strong> the major Gulf<br />
airlines <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> sign for any <strong>of</strong> the global<br />
airline alliances.<br />
Its Chief Executive Officer, Akbar<br />
Al Baker, said that after carefully reviewing<br />
its strategic opti<strong>on</strong>s, QR is<br />
“very clear that joining <strong>on</strong>eworld is<br />
by far the best way forward for us<br />
as we look <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> strengthen our competitive<br />
<strong>of</strong>fering <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> give <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
what they fully deserve – more<br />
choice.”<br />
QR currently serves 120 destina-<br />
More CX <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> can enjoy the benefits<br />
<strong>of</strong> using a Mobile Boarding Pass as the<br />
network <strong>of</strong> destinati<strong>on</strong>s where the service<br />
is available grows.<br />
The service was rolled out in Rome, Tor<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Bahrain <strong>on</strong> 28 August.<br />
Starting 1 November, <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> can<br />
check in <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> board using their mobile<br />
devices at nine more destinati<strong>on</strong>s, including<br />
Narita <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Haneda in Tokyo, Nagoya,<br />
Osaka/Kansai, Sapporo/Chi<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>se, Fukuoka,<br />
Amsterdam, Jeddah <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kuala Lumpur.<br />
It is also <strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer for <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> checking<br />
in at H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g, Auckl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Vancouver<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Taipei.<br />
Passengers who check in <strong>on</strong>line can<br />
choose <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> receive a boarding pass in the<br />
form <strong>of</strong> an email or text message <strong>on</strong> their<br />
mobile devices. The service is also available<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> transit <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> at H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g<br />
who originate from the eligible airports.<br />
“While the overall rate <strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>line check-in<br />
usage has remained stable after the initial<br />
roll out <strong>of</strong> the MBP service in January, the<br />
number <strong>of</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> who are downloading<br />
mobile boarding passes has almost<br />
doubled in July compared <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> January,” says<br />
Manager eBusiness Lawrence F<strong>on</strong>g.<br />
“We expect usage <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> grow with the expansi<strong>on</strong><br />

ti<strong>on</strong>s in 70 countries in the Middle<br />
East, Europe, Africa, North <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> South<br />
America, Asia <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Australasia.<br />
Fifteen <strong>of</strong> its destinati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
three countries – Iran, Rw<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>a <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
the Seychelles – will be new <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />
<strong>on</strong>eworld map.<br />
The carrier is set <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> move in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a<br />
br<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> new home in 2013 with the<br />
opening <strong>of</strong> the New Doha Internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
Airport, designed with an<br />
eventual capacity for 50 milli<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

QR operates <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> the world’s<br />
youngest <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> most modern fleets,<br />
currently st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing at 111 Boeing <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Airbus aircraft with an average age<br />

The Gulf carrier becomes the third<br />

Malaysian Airlines is expected<br />

year or early in 2013, while SriLankan<br />
Airlines will join later in 2013.<br />
Kingfisher Airlines is also still <strong>of</strong>ficially<br />
a member elect though its<br />
implementati<strong>on</strong> has been put <strong>on</strong><br />

or receipt at security checkpoints. Others<br />
require <str<strong>on</strong>g>passengers</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> scan their mobile<br />
boarding pass at self-service kiosks in<br />
order <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get a paper slip, which defeats the<br />
purpose <strong>of</strong> paperless check-in,” he says.<br />
“We will not roll out Mobile Boarding<br />
Pass services at airports until all the checkin<br />
procedures are refined <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> our preferred<br />
st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ard,” Brian adds.<br />
