BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Adrienne Corliss Drell was born on April 20, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, to Oscar
and Gertrude Sylvia Bleicher Drell. Throughout her life she was also known as “Bunny.”
She graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, in 1961. She attended
the University of Wisconsin in Madison and received a bachelor’s degree in history in
1965. During her junior year she studied abroad in England at the University of Sussex.
Drell received an M.A.T. degree in English from Northwestern University in 1966.
Following graduation Drell moved to Hawaii to teach creative writing at the
Kawananakoa Intermediate School in Honolulu. After one of her students burned down
the school and served six weeks in detention, Drell got her start in journalism by writing
a story about the incident for the Waikiki Beach Press. She worked at the newspaper for
several months in the spring of 1968 before moving back to Chicago.
Later that year Drell began working in the public relations department of the
American Red Cross, where she stayed until 1970. Drell remained interested in
journalism and pursued a career in the field, doing freelance work for several years
before landing at the City News Bureau of Chicago in 1973 as a general assignment
reporter doing extended stints covering federal courts, city hall, and education.
In 1976, Drell went to work for the Waukegan News-Sun where she was chief of
investigations and covered courts and the environment. While working at the News-Sun,
Drell exposed the Reverend L.R. Davis who exploited young sailors stationed at the
Great Lakes Naval Base near his Christian Fellowship Church in North Chicago, teaching
them how to desert the U.S. Navy without receiving a dishonorable discharge and asking
them to turn over their paychecks to him. Davis also seduced some of the young men,
including several minors, into homosexual relations. Davis brought a lawsuit against
Adrienne Drell and the News-Sun for defamation. The lawsuit was dismissed and
reinstated several times before Davis settled with the newspaper in 1991. Drell refused to
settle and charged Davis with slander and misuse of the courts for more than ten years.

Drell left the News-Sun in 1983 to join the Chicago Sun-Times as a reporter
covering courts, features, general assignments, legal affairs, and consumer fraud. She
was also the assistant city editor on the night desk. Major stories she covered during her
time at the newspaper included the Operation Greylord judicial corruption trials and the
Baby Richard adoption case. From 1989 to 1991, Drell also taught an undergraduate
journalism course in courtroom reporting at Columbia College in Chicago. She took a
year off from the newspaper in 1991 to attend Yale Law School on a Knight Foundation
Fellowship for Journalists, receiving an M.S.L. in 1992. In 1999, Drell edited a series of
end-of-century articles for the Sun-Times that resulted in the best-selling book 20th
Century Chicago: 100 Years, 100 Voices.
In 2001, Drell left the Chicago Sun-Times to become the Director of
Communication for the Children and Family Justice Center at Northwestern University
Law School. Beginning in 2003, she was an adjunct instructor at the Medill School of
Journalism at Northwestern before becoming an assistant professor, working with
graduate students at Medill’s Chicago newsroom.
Over the years, Drell won more than 25 reporting and writing awards, including
two Peter Lisagor Awards, five Chicago Newspaper Guild Stick-O-Type Awards, and
numerous Associated Press and United Press International Awards. She was also
involved in professional organizations such as Pi Lambda Theta Honorary Scholastic
Sorority, Society of Professional Journalists, Investigative Reporters and Editors, and
Journalism and Women Symposium.
Adrienne Drell was married to Frank Nitikman, a Chicago lawyer. The couple
did not have any children.
