BIOGRAPHICAL AND SUBJECT SUMMARY: Hanson W. Baldwin was born in Baltimore,<br />
Maryland on March 22, 1903. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in<br />
1924, and resigned his commission in 1927. He was a police reporter and general<br />
assignment reporter with <strong>The</strong> Baltimore Sun and later joined the staff of <strong>The</strong> New York<br />
Times. He was military and naval correspondent for <strong>The</strong> New York Times from 1937<br />
1942, and received the Pulitzer Prize in 1942 for a series of articles he wrote on the<br />
naval battles at Guadalcanal. He was Military Editor of <strong>The</strong> New York Times from<br />
1942-1968, and was Roving Editor of <strong>The</strong> Reader's Digest from 1968-1976. He is the<br />
author of numerous books and magazine articles. He died on November 13, 1991.<br />
FORMS OF MATERIAL: <strong>The</strong> <strong>collection</strong> is divided into several distinct series. <strong>The</strong> first covers<br />
the World War I and pre-World War II years, and is arranged by subject matter. <strong>The</strong><br />
second series deals with World War II and is arranged by subject matter with all correspondence<br />
arranged alphabetically. Series three concerns post-World War II matters and<br />
consists of government reports and correspondence, alphabetically arranged by correspondent.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>collection</strong> also includes numerous magazines and newspaper clippings, as<br />
well as a large <strong>number</strong> of photographs collected for a proposed pictorial history of the<br />
Army (which was never published.) <strong>The</strong> <strong>collection</strong> also contains the typescript of Baldwin's<br />
book, Tiger Jack, and some related correspondence.<br />
Additions to the <strong>collection</strong> were made in May 1994 and June 1994. Included in<br />
the May 1994 addition are correspondence, biographical information, manuscripts, and<br />
clippings from the years 1903-1987.<br />
<strong>The</strong> June 1994 additions include correspondence, photographs, miscellaneous<br />
documents, programs, certificates, retirement messages, newspaper and magazine<br />
clippings, and newsletters from the years 1963-1982, and a copy of Reminiscences of<br />
Hanson Weightman Baldwin, U. S. Navy (Retired), Volumes I and II.<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />
<strong>The</strong> Hanson W. Baldwin Collection was given to the <strong>George</strong> C. Marshall Research<br />
Foundation in 1978. <strong>The</strong> <strong>collection</strong> spans the years 1917-1977 and is divided into several distinct<br />
series. <strong>The</strong> first series covers the World War I and pre-World War II years and consists of<br />
government reports and articles concerning World War I casualties and statistics about events<br />
leading up to World War II. <strong>The</strong> second series deals with World War II and includes military<br />
operations reports (published and unpublished); war plans strategy session reports; national and<br />
international press releases; articles, speeches, and notes by Hanson Baldwin; Nuremburg Trial<br />
documents; a correspondence file concerning a proposed history of the World Wars; and an<br />
extensive general correspondence file. Series three concerns post-World War II matters and consists<br />
of correspondence and government reports dealing with the Korean War, the Cuban Missile<br />
Crisis, the U.S.S. Pueblo incident, and the Vietnamese TET Offensive.<br />
Also included in the <strong>collection</strong> are numerous magazines and newspaper clippings, as<br />
well as photographs and other non-manuscript material.<br />
Additions were made to the <strong>collection</strong> in May 1994 and June 1994.<br />
Access to the <strong>collection</strong> is unrestricted.<br />
Size: 7.5 linear feetl16 document boxes.
In addition to these major series are individual magazines, clippings, and other printed<br />
materials covering the period from World War I to the present. An additional group of books,<br />
periodicals, and newspapers has been transferred to the library <strong>collection</strong>.<br />
Also included in the <strong>collection</strong> are maps, certificates, and a sizable <strong>collection</strong> of photographs,<br />
many of them having to do with a proposed pictorial history of the Army.<br />
Additions were made to the <strong>collection</strong> in May 1994 and June 1994. Included in the May<br />
