of music thoroughly and well, rather than devote the time
to mediocre compositions that are of no lasting benefit.
The private recitals held fortnightly have become quite
a feature of College life. Pupils of all grades are required
to take part, and the interest is sustained by making piano
duetts, quartettes, singing by the chorus class, recitations
by the elocution pupils, and dialogues in French and
German, as well as singing and playing of solos, part of
the program.
Classes are formed for the study of notation, time, and
harmony, which every music pupil is required to attend.
The following text books have been used this year in
the theory classes on Wednesday: Peter’s Musical Copy
Book, Emery’s Head and Hands,” Palmer’s “ Piano
Primer,” and Challoner’s “ History of the Science and
Art of Music. Instruction is also given in musical history
and biography.
Diplomas will be given to pupils who complete the
prescribed course of study.
No regular pupil will be graduated in music until she
shall have completed her work in the literary department.
Pupils not taking the studies of the Literary course may
receive a diploma in music when they ’have completed
the prescribed scheme of study.
