Newton, Ezekiel Newton, married Caro-<br />

line Northrop, a sister <strong>of</strong> Lord Northrop.<br />

Franklin Newton was born December<br />

19, 1838, died January 27, 1894. He had<br />

a public school education, and followed<br />

the occupation <strong>of</strong> farming at Washing-<br />

ton, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, all his life, except dur-<br />

ing the period in which he served in the<br />

Civil War. He married Matilda Morgan,<br />

a descendant <strong>of</strong> a well-known New Eng-<br />

land family, always noted for its skill in<br />

financial matters which culminated in the<br />

person <strong>of</strong> the late J. Pierpont Morgan.<br />

Charles Hollister Newton was born<br />

May 3, 1877, at Washington, <strong>Connecticut</strong>,<br />

and there passed the years <strong>of</strong> his childhood<br />

and youth. He gained his education<br />

in the excellent schools <strong>of</strong> that town<br />

and proved himself an unusually good<br />

student. He left the parental ro<strong>of</strong> upon<br />

completing his studies and went to Tor-<br />

rington where he secured a position with<br />

a large manufacturing concern <strong>of</strong> that<br />

city, in the employ <strong>of</strong> which he received<br />

a rapid promotion. Later he was sent to<br />

Newark, New Jersey, to represent his<br />

firm, and there remained a considerable<br />

period. He then received an <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> the<br />

secretaryship <strong>of</strong> the Osborne-Stephenson<br />

Manufacturing Company <strong>of</strong> Plainville,<br />

and returned to that town to take up his<br />

new duties. He still holds this important<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice at the present time. Mr. Newton is<br />

very prominent in the general life <strong>of</strong><br />

Plainville and belongs to many important<br />

organizations and orders there. He is a<br />

prominent Mason, being a member <strong>of</strong><br />

Seneca Lodge, No. 55, Free and Accepted<br />

Masons, as well as <strong>of</strong> the higher divisions<br />

<strong>of</strong> the order. Fie attends the Congrega-<br />

tional church <strong>of</strong> Plainville and is prominent<br />

in the work <strong>of</strong> the congregation. He<br />

is a member <strong>of</strong> the American Society <strong>of</strong><br />

Mechanical Engineers.<br />

On September 15, 1894, Mr. Newton<br />

was united in marriage with Sara L. Wadhams,<br />

born October 16, 1876. To Mr.<br />

and Mrs. Newton one child has been<br />

born, Roger Hooker Newton, June 17,<br />

1909. He began his schooling at the age<br />

<strong>of</strong> four and gives token <strong>of</strong> possessing<br />

unusual mental powers, already showing<br />

a marked originality in his ideas and the<br />

ability to reason in the manner <strong>of</strong> an<br />

adult.<br />

TOLLES, Charles Levi,<br />

Business Man.<br />

Henry Tolles, the immigrant ances-<br />

tor, who was born in England, and set-<br />

tled in Wethersfield, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, as<br />

early as 1669, removing later to Saybrook<br />

in that colony. He was twice married.<br />

By his first wife, he had a son, Henry,<br />

mentioned below.<br />

(II) Henry (2) Tolles, son <strong>of</strong> Henry<br />

(1) Tolles, was in New Haven, April 15,<br />

1693. He married Rebecca Thomas,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Daniel and Rebecca Thomas,<br />

<strong>of</strong> New Haven. Children : Henry, mentioned<br />

below; Rachel, born 1696; Sam-<br />

uel, 1698; Daniel, 1700; Ebenezer, 1703;<br />

Dorothy, 1705; Experience, 1708.<br />

(III) Henry (3) Tolles, son <strong>of</strong> Henry<br />

(2) Tolles, was born in 1694, in New<br />

Haven, and died there in 1772. He mar-<br />

ried Deborah Clark, February 15, 1727.<br />

She died in New Haven, in 1788. Children,<br />

born in New Haven : Elnathan,<br />

born December 15, 1729, died in infancy;<br />

Dorothy, September 17, 1731 ; Francis,<br />

December 30, 1733; Henry, mentioned<br />

below; Mabel, August 21, 1738; Elnathan,<br />

January 9, 1741 ; Dorothy, September 3,<br />

1743; Rachel, December 1, 1745; Deborah,<br />

July 27, 1 75 1 ; Philemon, May 8,<br />
