In April following, the committee reported that they could<br />

not agree, eacli party thinking right was on its side. In December,<br />

1788, a vote was taken and passed to choose a commit-<br />

tee " to negotiate the matter with Watertown," and to settle<br />

it in such manner as they might think prudent, lyrovided<br />

they could obtain favorable terms, &c.<br />

When Farmingbury came to apply for town privileges, in<br />

1787 and subsequently, the people <strong>of</strong> the old town took the<br />

same position as they did in the case <strong>of</strong> Westbury and North-<br />

bury, and w^ere met by the same opposition.<br />

In October, 1793, pending an application to the General Assembly<br />

for an act <strong>of</strong> incorporation, the town voted that if the<br />

society <strong>of</strong> Farmingbury would within eight days give the old<br />

town " a legal acquittance <strong>of</strong> all their right in the public min-<br />

isterial and school moneys and other property," &c., then the<br />

town would not appear against the memorial <strong>of</strong> Farmingbury.<br />

SCHOOLS.<br />

<strong>Connecticut</strong> has been long distinguished for its common<br />

schools. <strong>The</strong> Code <strong>of</strong> Laws established by the General Court<br />

in 1650 recognized their importance.<br />

It being one chiefc project <strong>of</strong> that old deluder Sathan [says this Code] to keepe<br />

men from a knowledge <strong>of</strong> the scriptures, as in former times keeping them in an unknowne<br />

tongue, so in the latter times by perswading them from the use <strong>of</strong><br />

Tongues, so that at least the true sence and meaning <strong>of</strong> the originall might bee<br />

clouded with false glosses <strong>of</strong> saint seeming deceiuers ; and that learning may not<br />

bee buried in the graue <strong>of</strong> o"' Forefathers, in Church and Common wealth, the Lord<br />

assisting our endeauors—It is there fore ordered by this Courte that euery Town-<br />

shipp [&c.]—[Trumbull's Col. Records, Vol. I, p. 554.]
