East is sometimes inadvertently used for west, and north for<br />

south, and vice versa. Tlie settlers <strong>of</strong>ten bought and sold, and<br />

exchanged houses and lots, and this circumstance has increased<br />

the diificulty <strong>of</strong> ascertaing the earliest dwelling places <strong>of</strong><br />

individuals.<br />

Of the thirty original subscribers to the articles <strong>of</strong> settlement,<br />

thirteen never became permanent proprietors <strong>of</strong> Water-<br />

John Warner, Sen,, and Daniel Warner, father and son,<br />

whose names are in the first group, both intended to join the<br />

planters <strong>of</strong> Mattatuck, but died when about to remove, in 1679,<br />

in Farmington. <strong>The</strong> place <strong>of</strong> the father seems to have been<br />

filled by his son, Thomas Warner ; while the death <strong>of</strong> the son<br />

gave rise to the following action <strong>of</strong> the committee, which conferred<br />

his rights upon his widow.
