George Badger Cogswell <strong>in</strong> fitt<strong>in</strong>g for e ulleye was under the <strong>in</strong>struction<br />

nf lienjam<strong>in</strong> Greenleaf, LL. 1)., of Bradford. Mass., but completed liis prc]jnr-<br />

atory course <strong>in</strong> Gilmanton .A.cadeniy, N. H., and entered Dartmouth Coileyje<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1851. He did not complete the college course, but from 1S53 to 1855 fol-<br />

lowed a sailor's life before the mast around the world. Upon his return iiome<br />

he pursued the study of medic<strong>in</strong>e, attend<strong>in</strong>g lectures at the Harvard Medical<br />

School, and <strong>in</strong> 1857 he received the degree of M. D. from Dartmouth College.<br />

N. H. Dr. Cogswell was Resident Physician <strong>in</strong> charge of the Medical<br />

Department of the State Almshouse <strong>in</strong> Bridgewater, Mass., from June, 1S57,<br />

to July, 1859. He removed to North Easton, Mass., <strong>in</strong> 1S60, where he had a<br />

laige practice, and won em<strong>in</strong>ence <strong>in</strong> his profession. Dr. Cogswell, <strong>in</strong> 1S61, was<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted Postmaster, which office he still held <strong>in</strong> 1884. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the war of<br />

the Union, Dr. Cogswell was the Surgeon of tiie Twenty-n<strong>in</strong>th INIassachusetts<br />

Regiment. He was on the stafl' of General \\'iIcox, as Act<strong>in</strong>g Medical<br />

Inspector of the N<strong>in</strong>th Army Corps. He was once taken prisoner, and for two<br />

months conf<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Libby Prison. In 1S74 and 1S75 Dr. Cogswell was the<br />

Medical Director of the Massachusetts Department of the Grand Army of the<br />

Republic. He was a member of the .Massachusetts Medical Society. Upon<br />

the twenty-fifth anniversary of the graduation of his class, he recei\-eil the<br />

decree of A. -M. from Dartnioulli Colle-e. N H.<br />

1865, ^Em<strong>in</strong>n Thoriuiikc Proctor, daughter of Thorndike and Kmnia<br />

(Silsby) Proctor. She was born Jan. i.|, 1843, <strong>in</strong> Salem, Mass., where<br />

they resided. Mrs. Cogswell died April 1,1877. Gen. Cogswell mar-<br />

ried, Dec 12, 18S1, '-Eva M. Davis, daughter of Horatio G. and Lydi.i<br />

\V. (Carter) Da\is. She was born ]-"eb. 14, 1S53, <strong>in</strong> Salem, Mass.<br />
