Nathaniel Cogswell was lliree years old when his father died. He went<br />

from home <strong>in</strong> boyhood, and entered a store <strong>in</strong> Haverhill, Mass. He became<br />

a lead<strong>in</strong>g merchant and a prom<strong>in</strong>ent citixen of the town. In person he was<br />

of medium stature, portly, of dark complexion, with black hair and eyes. He<br />

was a man of <strong>in</strong>tegrity and bus<strong>in</strong>ess capacity. He united with the church<br />

June I, 1746, and was a devoted and efficient member.<br />

Mrs. Cogswell was the only surviv<strong>in</strong>g daughter of Joseph Badger, Esq., a<br />

merchant <strong>in</strong> Haverhill. She was but si.xteen years of age at the time of her<br />

marriage. At the age of twenty, March 18. 1744, she united with the church.<br />

She was a per.son of command<strong>in</strong>g figure and cultured manners. Her com-<br />

ple.xion was fair, her hair brown, and her eyes blue.
